Atkinson slams Gamers4Croydon
South Australian Attorney-General says he's not threatened by Gamers4Croydon in the upcoming state election; accuses gamer group of employing "dirty tricks."
It's no secret that South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson is frequently challenged by gamers about his stance on the R18+ rating for video games in Australia. But far from the angry letters and e-mails the Attorney-General is used to receiving, a group of gamers have decided to tackle him in a new arena: the political sphere.
Atkinson is now being challenged on his home turf by a new political party dedicated to seeing R18+ introduced. Gamers4Croydon, a 650-strong party set up by campaigner David Doe in September last year, is planning to run its own candidate against Atkinson in the seat of Croydon in the upcoming South Australian election.
Atkinson has held the seat of Croydon for the past 20 years--it is the Labor Party's second safest electorate in the state. According to the mission statement on its Web site, Gamers4Croydon's driving reason for existence is to "exert pressure on the Attorney-General for South Australia, Michael Atkinson, as he is currently the only Attorney-General voting 'no' against the introduction of an R18+ classification rating for video games in Australia."
Speaking to GameSpot AU this week, Atkinson--who has previously maintained that he is not the only Attorney-General opposing an R18+ rating for games--said he wasn't threatened by Gamers4Croydon's presence.
"It's 60 days until the election and they [Gamers4Croydon] don't even have a candidate yet," Atkinson said. "Their Web site is full of memorabilia but not much else. This electorate has some 24,000 people to talk to and convince. Personally, I see no evidence of local support for their party."
Support or not, Atkinson is already lobbing criticism at Gamers4Croydon. He believes the party is made up of gamers who will fail to act in a civil fashion.
"I assume the Gamers4Croydon campaign will involve criminal activities and dirty tricks, which is what I've come to expect from gamers," he said. "Regardless, I think they will struggle to get even 1 percent of the votes, and their campaign will actually discredit the public campaign in support for R18+ rather than enhance its chances. They [Gamers4Croydon] might do better leading up to the election, but at this stage they’re not doing anything. What's more, David Doe has to stop taking pleasure in people abusing me."
Atkinson said that the presence of a new challenging party has inspired him to begin his electioneering earlier.
"Their [Gamers4Croydon] presence has good effect on me. I’ve been door-knocking hundreds of homes around Croydon and I find I'm doing everything more thoroughly and earlier than I normally would. But that's not to say I'm not treating this seriously; I’m out there working on the basis that this is a real contest," he said.
Speaking to GameSpot AU in response to Atkinson's comments, Gamers4Croydon leader David Doe said the party has several candidates, but he refused to reveal any other details at this stage. Doe said there is an undercurrent of anti-Atkinson sentiment in Croydon.
"Yes, he’s been in this seat for 20 years," Doe said. "But from what I've seen so far, and the people I've talked to, there's a fair undercurrent of anti-Atkinson sentiment. The guy is hugely experienced and for this reason we can't get him out of parliament. Gamers4Croydon are going to try and run the best campaign we can and see what happens."
But with less than two months to go until the election, Gamers4Croydon has only just registered as a political party. What's more, the party continues to remain tight-lipped about its upcoming campaign plans--its strategy to date has been to speak to people in the community and gauge their opinion on issues like R18+ for games.
"We haven't spoken to everybody yet, but hopefully we’ll get the chance to speak to most people in Croydon. Right now we're focusing on letting people know there’s an election coming up. We’re definitely going to get busier," he said. "It's going to be a long and protracted battle. We can’t afford television or radio advertisements, so we'll stick to meeting people in the electorate and raising awareness on the issues. We’ll just keep asking questions and give people the opportunity to make their own choice."
Doe labelled Atkinson's comments about Gamers4Croydon employing "dirty tricks" in its campaign as ridiculous. Doe is adamant that his party will have no trouble in securing more than 1 percent of the vote and is confident that Gamers4Croydon will get a seat in parliament. To nab a seat in the lower house, the party will need 13,000 votes in the electorate of Croydon; for the upper house, it will need at least one in 12 people in South Australia to vote for the party.
"I'm confident this will happen," Doe said. "As for Atkinson, it's not surprising he'd say something like that. It's a completely ridiculous statement. This is a serious issue and we're running a serious campaign. We don't need to use dirty tricks. What's more, I know the party is picking up momentum because more and more people have heard about us when we approach them. The more I speak to people, the more people are aware of our aims."
These aims are varied. Gamers4Croydon, despite its name, is not focused solely on the R18+ issue. In fact, its dozen or so policies revolve around things like starting a retrofitting program to have rainwater tanks installed on all existing homes where practicable; introducing an Independent Commission Against Corruption; banning all political advertising with public funds; making it illegal for politicians to lie about matters of public importance; creating the world's largest solar electricity farm; and opposing mandatory Internet filtering. According to Doe, these policies were not an afterthought to the R18+ issue.
"The R18+ issue is catalyst, sure, but all the other things are policies we believe in deeply and we look forward to trying to enact them," he said.

Atkinson up to dirty tricks now. Saying gamers are more dangerous than outlaw bikies. All of this will be against him in the election.
I presume Michael Atkinson has put the idea that it has to be everyone that has to vote for the bill. On a side note, Singapore is the only other country that doesn't have R18+ for games and I don't know how their system works in that country. Hopefully we'll talk some more in the near future. You know how to mail me in this site.
I thought in a democracy, MAJORITY RULES... frickin loopholes
I also agree. His idea of censorship is totally outdated. Not having R18+ for games, cover R18+ DVDs and reveal anonymous commenters in SA by name and address and using a real Liberal Party person as an example that "don't exist". Also the recurring gag after saying Gamers4Croydon will use "criminal activities and dirty tricks" to win an election. Yet the Rann government sees nothing wrong with what he's doing. Worst of all, I wonder what's the point that EVERY attorney general has to agree to the amendmant? Is it because we need a single mind of everyone to pass this legislation or it's something else. It's like going down the yellow brick road and your group has been stopped by a guard, holding the entrance to the wizard and discussing with the other guards whether to let them in. (The Wizard of Oz).
I totally agree he needs to be sacked, ANY other job where you act like thats and you're GONE! but NOooOOOoo not a polly... can't sack them... they're untouchable pricks and they know it so act like that
Mr Atkinson should be removed from parliament... http://www.news.com.au/national/opposition-calls-for-the-sacking-of-attorney-general-michael-atkinson/story-e6frfkvr-1225826868219 but he has also labelled gamers4croydon criminals with the sentence "I assume the Gamers4Croydon campaign will involve criminal activities and dirty tricks". defamation is a breach of the ministerial code of conduct, this is deliberately diminishing the reputation of an individual or political party. how can someone who breaks the law be responsible for making laws to govern an entire country.
Nah Ive read enough of his rubbish for a long time lol, ill pass, but yeah those stats sound accurate, so I dunno why he makes a huge deal about such a pathetically small percentage that doesnt even apply to aussie gamers, he should find a statistic that shows how many games that are R18 overseas but are unedited and let in here under MA15, I just read one game that got RC, then a little appeal later and it was let in oz under MA with NO edits... I pity the kids who play these R rated games, and atkinson is directly responsible, ignorant geezer and yeah, I notice he reckons lots of other pollys support his views, but funny I never hear of them or their names, so much for disclosure to prove these claims

True. His six page letter has garbage which he believes will be available in Australia and what not. Gamers4Croydon Chris Prior pointed out that there's no evidence to suggest that games turns gamers into criminals and raping a mother and daughter game which is only available in Japan called Rapelay. Also his statistics which he thought backs it up. G is 54%, PG is 26%, M is 14%, MA15+ is 5.5%, RC is 0.5% and 8 has been withdrawn since September 2009. So the mentality is kids dominating the charts but really adult games is what is growing. His PS is "I'm grateful for the support from the Liberal Party for my stand on this". I could send you the 6 page letter if you have an email address to read it for your pleasure. Anyway, I don't think Michael Atkinson would learn his lesson anytime soon.
I'm sure you could fill a book with stuff this dummy doesn't know lol, or simply ignores because it contradicts his BS opinions so hides it from people by constantly whining about japanese rape games and americans shooting each other ONLY because of violent games apparently...
I'm curious R_evolution_Jay, about Playboy Mansion available on PC, PS2 and Xbox back then (thankfully not Gamecube), I mean, I can forgive the homeless, especially fifteen years old and over, looking for home, money and companions to hang out with. As if Playboy manage to get past the censors with nudity intact I think. Still, I can bet Michael Atkinson never played this game or ever watch Playboy movies grace into Australia.
15yo* lol
Made me laugh just before when I played my newest game [prototype], the opening part was gory as hell, I was cutting people in half and in other pieces too lol, yet this I never heard of for gore and banning or edits etc (which means 15 kids have access to this when overseas rate it as M17+), not that i was shocked, just made me laugh so hard really, because its a bunch of polygons... not reality! And yep, most of his so called facts are biased and not relevant to aussie gamers, people like him are the reason australia has the saddest internet speeds and plans etc in the developed world too...
True R_evolution_Jay. I wouldn't enjoy The Godfather and Scarface without the violence and same with games, ironically I got on the Wii with hardly any edits at all. For the record, I don't have the tendency of suddenly become a serial killer at all. It's just a game or a movie and we all should be entertained. "Children" should not always be the focal point in censoring games made for adults common sense does. In fact, children over 15 playing games made for adult would know what to expect once they reach adulthood. Anyway, Michael Atkinson wouldn't last without any evidence and with a useless stats backing his claim.
Cheers johnnyauau, something people like him need to do is actually play a variety of games right to the END, without cheating etc, so they get the full experience of the game and then he MIGHT figure out what gamers are talking about in that certain games need these elements to tell the story effectively, who would watch "Lord of the rings" if you took out all the violence... it's part of the game and the story and the immersion, not to mention reality, NOT just to satisfy violent idiots to practice some future murder or shooting... one piss weak percent of the disturbed population does not represent all of Australian gamers, or even anything significant worldwide in gaming, I wish this "get off my lawn" old man would figure this out!
I agree with you R_evolution_Jay. In terms of his character, the reason he's one sided because of his Christian values and his desire to protect children by censoring video games. To top it off, he sees the world with their ratings available to adult gamers and "international gamers can laugh at us all they like". I found his comment in one of the pages I search through. It's true he gave out vague statements and his recent comment which become a recurring gag about "criminal acts and dirty tricks", there's nothing left to care for him. If he hasn't challenged gamers to election, Gamers4Croydon wouldn't be hear to set the record straight and remove the attorney general who is suppose to represent his people.
He's ignorant and relying on most voters to be just as ignorant, that's how they win elections, ignorance and lies... I've watched him on TV, I've heard him on the radio (always grumpy and patchy/vague with what he says I might add), I've read all his statements etc, and bottom line is this guy has no clue on this subject, he really likes to continuously bring up points that are totally ridiculous and have nothing to do with Australia (brings up exclusive Japanese games, violent history American gamers have), so where's the relevant information for AUSTRALIAN gamers/voters? easy to win an argument if you have to lie and misdirect people... Doe brought up nothing but valid points that ARE relevant and naturally ignored by Atkinson, and was totally calm and polite, and does not resort to any "criminal acts and dirty tricks", unlike this 51yo "civil" politician who thinks he can stop an entire nation from growing up...so slam G4C all you like mate, just shows you really are worried ;)
As far as running an election is concerned, politicians like Michael Atkinson should be following the rules on the election process. I guess it's normal to have an opposition to compete with, but to call Gamers4Croydon campaign "criminals using dirty tricks" and for David Doe to stop taking pleasure in people abusing him is terrible sportsmanlike conduct. If he continues with these kinds of comments, its no wonder that it's hard to keep cool and to find ways to give common sense instead of abuse and insults everyday. I mean after I did some homework on R18+ and what it does, it makes sense to add it in. What MA15+ does it allows teenagers into things which is too strong for its taste but at least they understand between reality and virtual reality. I wish I could give more but the comments has its limits.

they dont just have local support, they have complete gamer national support. what have you got atkinson?
there other policies seem alright the solar farm idea has been around for years but atlas no takers and besides i want to stop importing game my god postage cost heaps
Irony = Accusing someone of dirty tactics without them doing anything to warrant it, when in the same sentence using dirty smear tactics on said people. Thank you Michael for revealing that little bit more of your personality in every comment you make before thinking.
Criminal activities? Atkinson really is crazy. =P
Hope you go well guys
Illegal activities? Is he serious? That guy has his head way to far up his butt

I think atkinson is relying way to much on his false image of gamers. People with no social skills and dead end jobs, rotting deal from soft drink etc. The party just needs to disprove this and it already puts atkinson on a back foot. Its great to see a party stepping up and giving out some common sense policies. Politicians bulls*%t so much, you can tell atkinson is afraid, if he was so confident he would win, he would be in his office with his feet up, not campaigning. Anyway, good work Gamers4Croydon!
Does that mean no more death threats?
they've got some great policies there aside from their main one, especially the rain water tanks and the anti-internet filtering. I think they could actually get a seat in the lower house.
I'm not in the Croyden area so I can't vote for them in the lower house, but if they're up for an upper house seat, they've got my vote.
The thing is being a gamer is a criminal activity! Also i think that if they bought in an R18+ rating then games that would usually be rated MA15+ would be moved up to R18+ and thus keeping them out of the hands of younger gamers, so its win-win and yet Atkinson refuses to do it.
"I assume the Gamers4Croydon campaign will involve criminal activities and dirty tricks, which is what I've come to expect from gamers." What the ****?! How on earth has he come to expect that from gamers? I'd honestly like to know what every gamer has done to this guy to make him come out with such unintelligent and downright offensive statements.
The Gamers for Croydon dudes only need 13000 votes to win a seat and kick this old idiot out. Support the Gamers for Croydon and make sure you send in your public consultation letters. This is actually going to be quite easy if we all commit.
Atkinson quote: "I assume the Gamers4Croydon campaign will involve criminal activities and dirty tricks, which is what I've come to expect from gamers". Yeah because gamers are what's wrong with society . Atkinson is such a thing starting with T that you can usually find a lot of in a shed.

I hate Atkinson so much, I recently found a video that made me LMAO!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBdI_dgdh6k
Playing politics? Why can't we just use medieval law and put forward a champion to fight to the death.
@gameking5000 This is not "stating a claim." It's why people hate Rush Limbaugh and why these people do more damage than good for their cause. They say things in extremely offensive ways intentionally to get a little bit of press coverage and get their point across. The guy is an official and he's literally bashing people with a hobby he doesn't understand and he's offending them just to get the press. Don't play devil's advocate for people who are this low.
They won't win the election against him. He's got 20 years of experience, they're a bunch of gamers with no real policies, they don't really stand a chance in the real political sphere. Still, at least it's causing Atkinson to reveal his true feelings about all this. He expects gamers to resort to "dirty tricks and criminal activities"? Yah, he clearly knows nothing about us, and in no way should he have any power over us.
I really don't see what harm violent content can do to gamers. I think all teen+ gamers can tell the difference between real life and a game. Atkinson has no idea what he is talking about, he knows he is going to lose, all us aussie gamers want is to get what we pay for in our games. Hope valve patch the gore in Left 4 Dead 2 if G4C wins.
All policies I can respect. If I were South Australian, I'd be interested in voting for them. Though I would be interested in seeing who their candidate is.
Jaws from James Bond comes to mind.
@angel32 It is merely a name and you dont judge people on there names just as you dont judge people on how they look. The avatar is there because i like SSBB and because i like dogs :)

@NECOthaHOUND, I think it odd that Americans are deciding to question their government NOW, and not when Bush was running the country into the ground :\ Obama is good for America.
lol Atkinson thinks running against him in a democratic election is a 'dirty trick' now :D
Can anyone else outside of South Australia vote in this election? If not, then we're screwed. It will also clarify that the democratic system is a total joke.
"I assume the Gamers4Croydon campaign will involve criminal activities and dirty tricks, which is what I've come to expect from gamers," - he's seriously starting to pull out all the political stops. Adelaide has an ageing population and any time there is an election all the politicians start pandering to the older voters. He'll do everything in his power to convince them that if an R18+ rating is introduced kids will start breaking into their houses and doing nasty things. The thing is older people have a lot of time to worry about things like that so if he gets enough on-side then he may have enough to block the adoption of a new rating scheme. If anyone is employing dirty tricks in this campaign it is the Attorney general.
@angelGP32 I m not even australian but I live here, if you had to cross out every country with bad politicians in it, you might as well go live in the moon, you think I won't go back to my homeland Italy coz there's a crazy ass corrupted gangster like berlusconi running it, or that I won't go visit China even though they screwed Tibet over, come on man name one country where ppl are happy about their politicians, I thought Obama might change that but even in the states ppl are complaining about his policies.
I hope this new party can make at least an impact and raise awareness about the 18+ issue, their other agenda seem decent too, especially their mandatory internet filtering policy, then again I never trusted politicians, it's clear that atkinson stands where he is coz he got the support of those 80 year old bigots that think that video games are the work of the devil, the gamers4croydon party might just be looking to appeal to younger ppl to gain their vote, it's politics fellas, no one of them really gives a f@&k about you or what you want, they wanna sit their ass in there and get paid, hope I'm wrong.
