EA and DICE's modern military shooter logs company-best quintuple-platinum global sell-through figures since hitting shelves October 25.
Electronic Arts' opening salvo in the Battlefield-versus-Call of Duty conflict landed in resounding fashion, when the publisher announced last week that Battlefield 3 first-week retail shipments totaled 10 million. With EA claiming that retail reorders for Battlefield 3 are coming in steadily, the publisher announced today that the game has sold through to consumers some 5 million units globally during its first week of availability.
Battlefield 3 now holds EA's record for fastest-selling game, the publisher said. The modern-day first-person shooter earned critical praise following its October 25 launch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
In its announcement, EA also recognized reports of server instability following the game's launch. However, citing internal figures, the publisher said that "servers and service uptime" came out to around 98.9 percent throughout the weekend. EA also said that its online servers experienced their highest-ever usage rates during the game's first weekend.
Last week, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter predicted Battlefield 3 will sell 8 million units this year alone. While that figure is impressive relative to most games' totals, Pachter believes it will be eclipsed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The analyst has projected that Activision's entrant into the FPS field will sell 16 million units this year.

@mad_krips I personally have a deep fondness for KZ3's multiplayer. I'm no stranger to KZ2's awesome multiplayer either, but KZ3 gets the edge from me for one key reason (which is also the reason I wouldn't compare it to CoD MP, at all). The sharpshooter controls in KZ3 are not only the best interface i've used for playing Killzone, it also creates the most immersive online multiplayer experience I've ever had. I'm not the type to complain about sore arms or legs- and I always stand while playing. I relish in the fact that I'm getting a decent amount of physical activity while playing an MP shooter (something that KZ2, Halo or the CoD games, for all their worth, have never given me)- not to mention that I'm a crack shot with a Sniper rifle (the Sta14, not the cheap one-shot one- I should also mention i NEVER use sniper rifles in other games, as my single shot accuracy with a controller isn't nearly as sharp as with the sharp shooter) Worth noting, that while I love the control system, I think KZ3 is the only game so far that has implemented it effectively. Socom and Resistance are both better when played with a dual shock. As far as Reach being better than Halo 3- I would say so, except for those cowards who over use armour lock! (When you play it, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about)
@blancobo Uh he' just an analyst, if you don't like what they say, don't read articles about sales... and predictions...
@StingrayX5 Haha. No my PS3 actually, but if the 360 is worse then it's a good job I bought the right console :P
Go EA, Hope you continue the sales of BF3, just fix Origin Eula and options, Continue patching and stop trying to be COD. I play Battlefield for Battlefield. COD for COD. Etc
Normally I say COD is better than Battlefield year on year however this year after playing both MD3 and BF3 I have to say it Battlefield 3 has kicked COD's ass! Well done E.A. keep it up! Perhaps they should do a joint game with Activision where they incorporate the customisation mechanics of the COD and use the Frostbite engine on the environments that's what I'd like to see!
The article is about Battlefield but GS always has to mention Activision MW3, Michael Pachter (and his load of crap)... Long live the FPS wars, the System wars, Console wars and Pachters crap! That's what sells... sadly but trully.
I don't know why people are crying BF3 an MW£ are diffrent. BF3 it tactical fps however MW3 is fast paced
@jpl83061 Hahahaha,my mistake,my finger slipped,it should be correct now :D And chickens are good at football,if you didn't know :D
@Rottenwood I understand what you want to say,but let's be fair,BF3 does have enough improvements over BC2,new engine, larger scale, more equipment and vehicles, etc to not feel like more of the same.Madden is just a roster update, nothing new. This comes from someone fully neutral in this BF3/MW3 war,who wont buy either of them...
As awesome as the game is, I now completely hate DICE. They just revealed that they lied to the community about PC being the lead platform, they actually changed to console midway, and that they rushed the game and left bugs in it so they can meet the release date, something they said they wouldn't do. They also constantly slander and insult their community, for example, Bach openly said they get mad at them giving out "free stuff" like in BC2, making people think the community was stupid. However, the truth to the matter was that the community was angry ebcuase the "free stuff" was already on the disc and they were just procedurely unlocking stuff which was in the game from the start, so they could claim it was DLC. I've lost all respect for them. So have many others.
i hope they fix the Tehran Highway map because it lags on every server for everyone.....most of the problems that the game has, from lag to poor performance for some, comes from the stupid origin thing
@vegeta2002 yeah I like BF3 but felt that the single player campaign could have been a LOT better. I'm not talking about length, just improving what they already had. That and the whole Battlelog thing has screwed up the PC version, crashes half of the time your try to play it.
Madden used to sell like hotcakes too... until people realized they were paying 60 dollars a year for improved graphics and balance tweaks.
EA releasing the same Madden game every year: "BOO!" EA releasing the same FPS every year: "YAY!" You guys are confusing.
I really don't know y people wanted from this & any other FPS u aim & shoot not much u can do wit that this games wasn't gonna b any differnt then CoD besides Batman:AC FTW
Alright, sales got better, now fix and add more server for more player, I had difficulty access to the Battlefield 3 server cause it either full or out of access range, sometimes crash as well, add more server please!!! >
I have to admit, I was worried about this game after that s**tbomb of a beta, but I'm happy to say its turned out good, not perfect but certainly playable.
Apparently all PC gamers were not aware that they give full access to all files on their computer to EA in the process of installing Origin. Watch "EA Origin is Spyware" on YouTube for more info, or Google about.
I know this will get thumbs down, but after all the hype and videos we've seen I wasn't impressed all that much by the games graphics for consoles. I pre-ordered the game and had it delivered last week, played it properly for the first time last night. The game is quality don't get me wrong, it's ace. I just wish I hadn't set my hopes so high - I felt a little let down with the textures. It's still a cracking game otherwise though, and from what I've played of the campaign the story seems solid :) 8.5 is spot on in my opinion!
@Samus_Chan +1 for doing the research.Gives you a lot of credibility.I howewer still do not trust EA and Origin, and will pass on the game for indefinite time.To you it may seem stupid, but I find the scans suspicious enough and won't be using it. We will have to agree to disagree here, continuing this disscussion wouldn't lead us far.Have a nice day :)
@MidNightStrikes Yes, so true. NOTHING can stop me from playing the epic game I've spend time and money on preparing for, Battlefield 3. I can say Battlelog is not all bad. It could have been in the game but they chose to implement it in that way. As for Origin, I find absolutely no reason for it to be there. It's a waste of time and resources. Anyways, thank you DICE for providing a brilliant game. The proof in the sales.
Dunno what ppl are on about i liked the campaign no i actually loved it. The facial animations, detail, voice acting and rush of the story made it awesome. The multiplayer is such a good experience. Havent had this much fun with a multiplayer game since halo 3.
Am I the only one who really doesn't care for the game? I was looking forward to this game more than any other this year, but I find it to be this years biggest disappointment. I enjoy playing campaign modes, but BF3's is just downright awful. I do enjoy the multi-player.... when it's working. Personally, I prefer playing hardcore (Because it should not take an entire clip to bring down a player.), but, of course, they only have about 10 servers running hardcore, and there's always a que to get into a game, so you spend most of the time waiting. That's really fun. Thanks EA. I never thought I would say this, but I'm actually looking forward to MW3, and I wasn't even planning on buying it. (Sigh) Whats the world coming to?
@tachsniper I can already tell you have done absolutely zero research into both Steam or Origin or anything you just wrote in your most recent post. I bought Black Ops at Best Buy and it activated itself on Steam. Not to mention it also had to update itself right out of the box. So you DO need Steam to play Black Ops and I'm betting you'll need Steam to play Modern Warfare 3, no matter where you get it from. Also, guess what? You can quit Origin while playing any given Origin game. I've got Bad Company 2 open right now but Origin is not open. Although you do activate BF3 through Origin, you DON'T need it open to play. Hey, you know what else? I just tried quitting Steam while playing a Steam game. It won't let me. It gives me the message "Please close [insert game here] before closing Steam". Also, after checking up on Rocker6's Sandboxie thing, Origin doesn't scan for anything credit card related; it just scans specific folders that hold no real relevant data. But hey, whatever helps you sleep at night.
@MidNightStrikes Yup, thats whats holding me back from getting it on the PC. Won't start a debate over Origin vs. Steam, but I've already heard some so-so things about Origin, and not even a great game like this can lure me into that client. Valve should conduct a poll on steam. See how many users would actually buy the game...maybe then EA and Dice would realize what their missing out on.
Honestly BF3 will be, by far, the best multiplayer of the year. Absolutely awesome game. What a great time for gaming! Too many great games, too little time.
not too shabby PS lets not fool our selfs BF3 is not going to outsell MW3 but if MW3 cant outsell BO then thats will be pretty awesome, thats all we want, the slow death of COD so they never make it to COD10 and still sell tens of millions
@SOUP_MAN_242 Completely agree with you. I liked MW and Black Ops but there was no magic when playing both those games. Then started BFBC 2 and immediately liked the game. Just got BF 3 and it is amazing. Having started campaign yet, just multiplayer. Props to DICE and EA.
Best Multiplayer game of the year so that puts it in my top 5 of the year, easily. I will spend more time playing this game than any other game I am getting this year, even Skyrim.
if it comes out on steam il buy the PC version. other wise im living with the PS3 version. main reason why i hold to this isnt cause im a steam fanboy its cause i would rather not have ever use origin in the future.
@dz99ls how in the h3!! do you think this is anywhere near CoD? Is it the OP Killstreaks? Oh, wait, there isn't any! Or is it the ridiculous excuse for a sniper class? Oh, wait, BF's sniper class is actually balanced and makes sense. Is it the bring a knife to a gun fight and win BS? Oh, that's right, BF's doesn't have a 20 foot lunge..nor is it a one hit kill everytime. Hmmmm yes I can see how this is exactly like CoD in almost every way........
@Samus_Chan Your argument has one fatal flaw, Steam only has you use it when you buy the game from steam. if you got black ops from anywhere but steam you didn't have to use it. Only to activate but you didn't need steam running while you played. You NEED origin to play Bf3 no matter where you got it from. Oh yea Origin can scan your computer for anything, potentially credit card numbers, and any other sensitive information it wants, without any option not to. Sorry EA doesn't get to dictate what i can and cannot have on my computer. And if your whole argument is based on "one might say" it's pretty flimsy to begin with.
