Executive reportedly name-drops next numbered entry in long-running large-scale military shooter franchise during college campus event.
What we heard: Battlefield 3 is barely two weeks old, but Electronic Arts is already thinking about the sequel.
The University of Southern California held a campus event last night that featured a talk from EA president Frank Gibeau. If the Twitter account is accurate, Gibeau addressed the future of the Battlefield franchise, saying, "There is going to be a Battlefield 4."
The notion of another Battlefield game on the way is hardly surprising. Battlefield 3 was EA's biggest launch ever, shipping 10 million copies worldwide for day one. The game was well received by critics and sold through more than 5 million copies in the first week.
While more Battlefield is a foregone conclusion, the bigger question is when EA would release it. Activision gave its own confirmation of the next Call of Duty game yesterday, but unlike EA, the Modern Warfare 3 publisher said that its next military shooter would arrive in 2012.
In August, DICE executive producer Patrick Bach said in an interview that annualizing the Battlefield franchise would "dilute the vision" and "eventually kill the franchise." Battlefield is not quite a yearly franchise for EA, which saw two years pass between the release of 2008's Bad Company and that of last year's Bad Company 2. Battlefield 3 marks the first numbered game in the series since the release of the PC-only Battlefield 2 in 2005.
The official story: EA had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment as of press time.
Bogus or not bogus: Not bogus that Battlefield 4 is coming eventually, but when and how it launches remain to be seen.
@madvibes i'm going to answer ur 7 points release notes: 1. u put "Add 64 player to consoles" answer: y so many people in a map, is it because u can't kill anyone? 2. u put "Focus on gameplay on both single player and multiplayer" answer: it seems u don't even own the game, because it's clearly u don't know what ur talking about. 3.u put "Make player controls more fluid." answer: it's time for u to clean ur remote control because it's dirty and old. 4. u put "Shorten Mp game modes" answer: WTF u make no sense. 5. u put "Add more Mp game modes" answer: once again WTF u make no sense. 6. u put "Fix frame rate issues." answer: get another part time job and get better internet access. 7. u put "etc.etc..........." answer: u sound like a COD fanboy.........LOSER !!!!
@jorgeabk @madvibes Why you hate too much. And Btw i play Battlefield 3 and last time i checked. It doesn't Really have THAT much Game modes. Im no COD fanboy Just a regular Gamer that plays a decent Amount of games.but cod has more game modes to put on the Table. Despite Their shitty Community of ten year olds Complaining. Anyways Stop with the War and lets go back to the Battlefield. My PSN is halex3
I'll take a BFBC3 over a new BF. This game should have a long life, I'll say until the end of this gens consoles, but BFBC3s story needs to be completed! i want to know what happens!
I am sure Battlefield 3 is one of the best multiplayer games out there, but not everyone has a great internet connection. Or enjoys being fragged by campers. If I could suggest an improvement, I would suggest bot support. Just like battlefield 2. It gives noobs and people with poor connections a chance to play the multiplayer aspect of this great game. Which it seems EA put all of its time and energy into.
I think they nearly perfected the multiplayer in battlefield 3 so In battlefield 4, they really only need to spend more time on fixing problems and using more time on better campaign with a Plot and don't try to release earlier than COD.
No EA don't do this to us don't become a churn em and burn em like the COD franchise I'M BEGGING YOU LISTEN TO THE DICE MAN HE SPEAKS THE TRUTH whyyyyyy does EA have more money then dice, the worlds not fair
dear gamespot... well of course Battlefield is not a yearly occurance, unlike call of duty DICE takes time to make a new game, a concept that apparently the call of duty franchise has not even heard of.
Out of the video game industry, this just might be one of the fastest sequel confirmations I have ever read.
I really liked the BF3 campaign, especially towards the end, it was exciting, and i really enjoyed the story, best story in a FPS in a while imo, loved it.
BF4? no thank u, Im having a blast with BF3, I do would prefer that BF3 keep getting support like new maps, and weapons, more game modes and stuff.
@Venatorcruiser Sorry Sir never intended a flaming war  I was saying that the last game in MOH felt a lot like COD e.g the revamped controls and streamlined action packed single player. I did played MOH Airborne and Allied Assault back in the day and loved them, So no hatred for MOH but they should improve multiplayer as in last game it was broken :)
I sincerely hope it comes during the next gen cycle. being released now would just be anti climatic and the game would be easily forgotten.
Also, the next CoD game was announced months ago and Saints Row 4 has already been announced and the third game hasnt come out yet. We all knew BF was going to come out with another game, dont act surprised.
Just because they annouce a game doesnt mean it is coming out in a week. Halo Anniversary and Halo 4 were annouced at the same time at E3 this year and yet we wont see Halo4 for atleast a year and Anniversary for 2 weeks. Seeing as DICE has always taken their time with their games, we wont see another BF until next gen console. CoD on the other hand, will be here again next year with their copy and paste style game, AGAIN.
There is no surprise EA intends on continuing the Battlefield series as it does so well financially. Financial success generally dictates further iterations, generally. However, announcing their intent for a Battlefield 4 at this time, in my opinion, is not appropriate since BF3 has not been out for very long with all the current bugs it still possesses.
Announcing a new title before gamers are able to break the seal on the current one..Battlefield is becoming more and more like CoD all we need now is massive loads of dlc......
hope they start making a mirrors edge 2 with the new engine now that they have the time, that would be so cool :3
@MW3addict BF3 and CoD are apples to oranges, both of those are good sales (I wouldn't back my game up based solely of sales figures seeing as though over 60% of those sales were children under 18 asking their parents to buy it for them) when I say apples and oranges I say that because, in CoD its a killfest, you just have to know the choke points and try to get a couple shots in, do that enough and you get perks that's basically cheating for your team, that's not realistic gameplay, BFX requires that you HAVE to work with your team, use actual warfare tactics to get the upper hand, making you think tactically not something any CoD will ever offer because their formula never and will never change, CoD is more popular, but not necessarily the best online FPS experience out there, and BF3 doesn't really have advanced UAV perks, we can jump in a helicopter and target enemies so the rest of our squad can find them, he can also fly gets and drive hummvies, all while using dedicated servers do the guy with the best Internet connection doesn't kill us, even if we shoot first, so play BF3, rent it, and see why its gameplay far surpasses MW3 in every aspect
Ha, funny that all the BF fanboys are complaining of CoD coming out to soon all the time, now we got BF4 possibly coming out already
I heard BF4 will have an expiry date. You play for a month and then you need a new copy. That's on top of the online pass of course. Greed is good says EA.
Take your sweet time developing it. Maybe it will come to next gen consoles around 2013 and will run in 60 fps in more up to date hardware (one of the so called advantages of CoD over BF3 consoles versions).
Next Release Notes: 1. Add 64 player to consoles. 2. Focus on gameplay on both single player and multiplayer 3. Make player controls more fluid. 4. Shorten Mp game modes 5. Add more Mp game modes 6. Fix frame rate issues. 7. etc.etc...........
I mean, it's pretty obvious that there will be a Battlefield 4 at some point, so this article isn't really telling us much. It does put me at ease that DICE does not want annual installments.
plz take your time DICE,no need to rush it or make it annual,BF3 has my multiplayer needs fulfilled :)
Please don't let this game come out for like 5 years. I want it to be like what Battlefield 3 was wanting to be. And also so they aren't copying CoD/Need for Speed and just releasing games with minor changes withing a year of eachother. We don't want more of the same games, we want small amounts of really amazing games!
I don't think a single gamer on this earth didn't know this was coming. I'm cool with it as long as BF4 uses frostbite 3 engine.
Was anyone really surprised by this? Guess that's why they did not call this BF3 Final Chapter or something along that line. Just wish they would not announce something this fast. At least wait until the milk sours, its just so fresh right now.
