Sony posts strong weekly sales numbers following 120GB console's launch, Mobile Suit Gundam Battlefield Record U.C. 0081 leads software with 178,000 units.
As part of the NPD Group's monthly US retail sales report yesterday, Sony announced that PlayStation 3 sales have jumped 300 percent at top retailers since the $299 120GB Slim went on sale late last month. Unsurprisingly, that trend has held true in Japan, as well.
Following the PS3 Slim's unveiling at GamesCom 2009, Media Create reports that Sony's console shifted an impressive 151,783 units for the week of August 31-September 5. That figure was slightly higher than the 150,832 units Famitsu publisher Enterbrain announced earlier in the week.
Namco Bandai's Mobile Suit Gundam: Battlefield Record U.C. 0081 had the benefit of launching alongside the PS3 Slim, taking the top slot with 178,000 units sold on the week. A trio of DS titles followed, with Nintendo's Tomodachi Collection (87,000) edging out Square Enix's Dragon Quest IX (50,000) and Konami's Love Plus (46,000). Nintendo's Wii Sports Resort sold an additional 43,000 units during the week, while fellow Wii title Monster Hunter 3 shifted 22,000 units.
Level 5's Sloane and MacHale's Mysterious Story 2 debuted on the DS with 19,000 units, and Nintendo's forthrightly titled You'll Incur Losses if You Remain Ignorant: How Money and Things Work on the DS sold 16,000. Perennial charter Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on the PSP and Spike's 428: Fuusa Sareta Shibuya de for the PS3 rounded out the week's software chart with 15,000 units apiece.
As for the remainder of the hardware sales, the DS and DSi combined for 68,728 units during the first week of September. The PSP got the better of the Wii, selling 22,184 units to 21,557. With Microsoft pulling the trigger on the Xbox 360's price cut on September 10, the console sold 8,309 units during the August 31-September 5 accounting period. Sony's stalwart PlayStation 2 brought up the rear with 3,001 units sold.

Agreed. PlayStation 3 price drop was necessary to spur sales, particularly now that Nintendo is set to follow suit at a $199 price point.
WTG SONY!! Nice to see Sony at the top of the chart again. Now Square please give me a release date for FF XIV Online!!!!
"people cant say japanese stick to japanese consoles because before the ps3 sold a lot, more people had 360s in japan!" back when ps3 wasnt out
wtf? did the world change overnight or did they buy a game where all u do is mash square button over and over and over....
Anyone know if the Gundam game is any good? I miss having a great mech game (Armored Core is over-rated suckage). Hope one is made or ported soon.
If anything happens to my ps3 I'll fo' sho get me one of those 120 slims..Indeed!! My ps3 has survived a yr w/o any problems so far so im totally fine for now..
@ wopchop23 My friend: it is a FACT that the PS2 was always in front of the XB and the GC. The PS3 is the first one trailing and I DO AGREE WITH you that it will catch and supercede the competition. Comparing $250 for a PS2 like system with motion control (th Wii) against the PS3 which is now only $50 bucks more... there is a very obvious direction to take... go with the better console. On the other hand... if you want to save some money... then get a PS2 for $99 which is cheap and has AN INMENSE LIBRARY! The next run for the 360 I think will come with the NATAL technology. It just looks so cool for those into motion control... but that is for next year to look into.
With this excellent price point for the PS3 the PSP Go seems so expensive now! HD, vs SD, 120Gb vs 16Gb, home vs portable, wireless vs wireless, AC power vs DC battery power, ++++hardware vs PS2like hardware... seems like a bit on disadvantage for the $50 less than a PS3 and $150 more than a PS2.
This is where ps3 slowly pulls in front of the two. Following the same trend as the ps2. Sony is great
That's an impresive number for a week and I hope that it goes this way for a week or two and then we have FF XIII launch just some days before christmas (althought most Japanise aren't Chrisitans :P but christmas is popular)
After the hot water Sony was in before, it is great to see them bringing it back. As an owner for 9 months now (sold that one to buy a Slim) I would say that the PS3 is a solid console and should definitely be a part of any gamer's collection.
Also nice to see the PSP sell well. If Sony keeps on putting out great games and great systems, we might be seeing these type of numbers in America. Can't wait to see what happens with the GO. And with my PS3 it was the 80010514 error but I since tried a game and it was the 8001050F error. At least it's not total PS3 error like RROD or YLOD.
Wow. Just wow. My PS3 disc drive went kaput yesterday. Still don't know if it's a total failure but I'll see. I bought it used so no warranty. $150 for Sony to fix it. I'll stick with my PSN games at the moment.
people cant say japanese stick to japanese consoles because before the ps3 sold a lot, more people had 360s in japan!
Wii will pick back up when the two new Super Mario Bros. games are released. DSi will reign again in Japan once Spirit Tracks is released. The software numbers don't rule out the Wii and DSi at all. best game title ever: you'll incur losses if you remain ignorant: how money and things work (ds)
@ scareface_dm, get a life, youve commented on this like 5 times, your a 360 fanboy! we get it, u dont like it we get it that sonys finally bringing in its a game so u try and piss off ps3 owners because they bothered to get the better console! why dont you get that stick out of your a s s and go do something useful like finding a cure for RROD?
good for sony and microsoft needs to do sth fast i hope they aren't relying on natal to fix things cuz it probably won't do much effect
WOW!!! Numbers like that are usually reserved when games like Final Fantasy launches, let's hope for similar numbers in December, when FFXIII comes out :D
@thisisjosh agreed Its I guess still the Ps3, but it can be considered a new console, and the price cut which everyone was complaining about it cut down to a decent price now. So of course its gonna sell well. but yea good for the ps3 =3
i don't see what the big deal is here, Sony released a new version of a console, it's new to everyone so it will do well. good for everybody right? who loses and whats to complain about?
@ scarface_dm Put a sock in it already. You're just a bitter, butthurt M$ fanboy that trolls every Sony article every chance you get. If it was M$ winning like always, you would go on and on about how Sony sucks.
Hmm... It sold the same amount in Japan as in (possibly) america. What I am curious about is why everybody (possibly) bought that Gundam game. I mean come on, although Gundam is good, was there nothing out (In JAPAN nonetheless) besides Gundam that convinced them to buy it? What I mean to say is that there are so many obscure titles in which are very well acclaimed there that I am surprised. Lol. Good to see the Wii and DS being outdone for once, lol because they never are. And, whats more, all of you X-Box 360 fanboys who thought it would sell better... HA HA HA HA!
Nintendo/360 fans need to go find a hobby or do something productive with their lives rather than sit all day in front of their computers giving everyone a thumbs down.
I'm pretty surprised that the PS3 sold so much in Japan in one week. I expected that the PS3 sales would break 100K, but I'm surprised that it actually broke 150K within one week, especially considering it's Japan, where many of the gamers there already have PS3s. It will be interesting to see how well the PS3 does for the rest of September in Japan, as well as in the US and Europe, where there are much more gamers.
Im tired of the stinkin XBOX owners mouthing off, Sony will own you. OWN YOU!!!!!! lol, I feel better now, let the thumbs down rain down on me.
well the thing about the PS3 is everyone always wanted one, it's just the price was way too high. Now that's its way more reasonable, it's worth buying. I'm gonna get one soon, I been waiting for the price to drop
Im so sick of the japanese sticking to japanese products while americans dont care....How about we stick to american products too, lets see how they would take it huh
