BioWare taking Star Wars MMOG beta apps

EA-owned studio opens up applications to participate in closed testing phase for The Old Republic on PC.

BioWare caught some flack from a number of diehard Knights of the Old Republic players when it announced that its next installment in the franchise, Star Wars: The Old Republic, would be a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. To assuage complaints, though, BioWare has said on multiple occasions that SW:TOR would be tantamount to 10 or more sequels to its hit action RPG.

With all of that content, SW:TOR is going to need a healthy pool of testers to work out any number of unforeseen bugs in the code. As a result, BioWare said today that it has begun accepting applications to participate in the game's closed beta testing phase through the game's official Web site. (As of press time, the SW:TOR Web site is unavailable due to heavy traffic.) The EA-owned studio did not indicate when the beta phase would begin, saying only that it would be "an ongoing process."

SW:TOR takes place approximately 300 years after the events of the original game, but some 3,600 years before the events of LucasArts' quintessential films. Players can choose to align themselves with either side of the Force, taking on professions like the Sith Warrior and Bounty Hunter for the Dark Side and the Trooper and Smuggler for the Galactic Republic.

BioWare has yet to place a firm release date on Star Wars: The Old Republic. For more information, check out GameSpot's extensive previous coverage.

Tom Magrino has covered the games industry since 2006. He's been compared to Steve Martin by Ozzy Osbourne and Daniel Craig by Tim Schafer. His voice, heard largely on GameSpot's podcast, recalls that of Kermit the Frog. It ain't easy bein' Magreen.

I'm definitely going to buy this and will have a toon in game on day one, but I'm still not convinced this will replace star wars galaxies for me. This looks like a single player game with other people involved as an afterthought. I still haven't seen much evidence of depth from the trailers/previews for this.

The website is completely lost it, I had to register 3 times in a row to have the "Verify your e-mail" screen thing pop up, and now it doesn't want to accept my personal information. BioWare, act on it.

iono; personally i wanna be a Sith Warrior, but if you've read through the entire universe, you'll see that the Smugglers are bad-asses in there own right. Booster Terrick has his own Imp Star II (least, i think that was the class, been a while since i read about his SD).

@nooblet69 you're prolly the only person was able to get through all the buggy sign up problems people are having lol

give blizzard a break, wow is 5+ years old, and only able to make subtle updates as they continue to create more content around it's old structure. I'd like to see a side by side comparison of what blizzard is working on, vs. this... --personally, i feel this game would have a hard time balancing between characters... star wars has been built on the idea that jedi and sith are absolute bad-asses... who would want to play as anyone else? especially, the smuggler, a dude who kicks someone in the nuts... that's weak, and Han wouldn't have even done that. And the cut scene dialog to get you into the story, while a good idea, when i saw it for the first time in the video above, i wanted to skip it.

Do... Do you know what? Screw the closed beta for your game, apparently your signup form is the thing in need of debugging right now.

wtf is that? because it's suppose to be "10 or more sequels" that's suppose to make up for the fact you'll buy this game once and then rent it from them perpetually? you guys are suckers for allowing them to foist this "pay to play", old school token video arcade bs on you. did any of you learn anything from sw: galaxies?

A lot of people seem to be unaware that the primary function of closed beta is not previewing the game, but debugging it. I wonder how many good testers will actually be selected in place of people who just want to preview the game.

I would like to see a sequel to Kotor 1,2 as well but will take this and since Im a vet from SWG I know what to expect at least from the MMO stand point but hopefully Bioware doesn't change the system in this MMO as Sony did in SWG. Also, I like bounty hunter Boba Fett and such and the spy is my cha rin SWG now so Jedi might be a after thought for me. Now Im staring at a sever mat screen... looks like I might have to wait for lauch with this one.

I have been a Knights of the Old Republic fan since the first game was released, it was purely awsome. However, finding out it was going to be made as a mmo, I must admit I got mad. Destroying the very last good singleplayer games... almost every damn game no a days focus on multiplayer in my opinion. Anyways, but since I'm a great fan, it would be idiotic if I didn't at least try it. So yeah, see you all on Coruscant. ;)

Glad to see an MMO based upon KOTOR...it is a world that deserves an MMO. No, this is NOT a sequel to KOTOR. I would imagine that sometime sooner or later there will be a KOTOR 3 but I am very happy this is coming when it is. I won't be doing the beta on this one. Had my fill of betas and just want to enjoy this one out of the box and new.

Offworlder1
Offworlder1

They still don't get it, the reason KOTOR fans are pissed is because its an MMO for a "sequel", saying more of the same is just ignoring the fans who are angry. Telling fans the same thing as before about its "the tantamount to 10 or more sequel" is part of the reason people are complaining as we want a KOTOR 3, not an MMO or some BS 300 years later. Finish the story and then do an MMO not this as people are giving them flak justly so, the fans will not stop with the hate until theres a REAL sequel to KOTOR 1, and 2 which would be KOTOR 3. Bioware needs to open their eyes and ears and give the fans the game that finishes the story began in KOTOR 1, not a side story MMO but a SP RPG story. You continue to ignore the fans and they will not support you, they even started on KOTOR 3 and it was scrapped, they had a story, characters, and pre production started it was moving alone nicely but they scrapped it for no reason.

"EA-owned studio...BioWare has said on multiple occasions that SW:TOR would be tantamount to 10 or more sequels to its hit action RPG." Since BioWare is now owned by EA there is no such thing as BioWare words, everything they say should be considered as EA words. And that means their words should be considered empty.

MMO the big fad right now. I personally prefer single player campaigns more like in KOTOR but this game will be great

Another thing, why are icons needed to to take cover. If there's an obstacle there that can use for cover shouldn't we just be able to just use it if it's there? Non-interactive and static environments should be completely done way with. Go have a look at Rainbow Six, COD, Gears of War if you're not sure how cover should work in an environment. YOU SHOULDNT NEED ICONS!
