Description

We're always focused on what's next: upcoming games, behind-the-scenes reports from industry events across the world, interviews with game developers, and a few surprises here and there.

One of the dumb ongoing jokes we have in the GameSpot office is coming up with terrible nicknames for great games. Despite being a towering artistic achievement and one of the few games able to span the cavernous gap between adrenaline-filled shooter fans and intellectuals looking for a rich narrative, BioShock hasn't been spared from our tyranny. Yes, whenever someone brings up the game, one of us--likely me--will inevitably say, "You mean BioSchlock?" and throw their hands up in forced laughter. I'm not sure how this practice originated, but it's a fun way to take the wind out of someone's sails who's lucked into writing about a great game.

Despite my affinity for using that nickname, I'm a pretty huge fan of the game. So when a virtually complete build of the PS3 version arrived on my desk last week, I was psyched to take a look at some of the exclusive features for this fashionably late port. But as it turns out, the biggest feature--those downloadable challenge rooms that force you to use plasmids in clever ways to solve puzzles--isn't on the disc. Yep, it's just the standard story mode. But still! It's BioShock, and any excuse to play it again is fine by me. I did just that earlier this week, and in the process I managed to pick up on a few PS3-centric features that a few people will probably be interested in.

Install Info
Using the thoroughly scientific method of starting the install process and timing it with my cell phone's stop watch feature, I clocked in BioShock at 10 minutes and 30 seconds to install. The file ends ups occupying 4.98 gigs on the hard drive. It's not a very hefty install, which would explain why load times don't seem noticeably better compared to the 360 version. But then again, this isn't 100% finalized code, so take all these numbers with a grain of salt. Sea salt! From the bottom of Rapture.

Trophies
From the outset, BioShock lists three gold trophies, one silver, dozens of bronze, and a bunch of secret ones of indeterminable color. For gold, there's "Brass Balls" (Complete the game on Hard difficulty without using a Vita-Chamber), "A Man Chooses" (Complete the game on Survivor difficulty), and "I Chose the Impossible" (Complete the game on Survivor difficulty without using a Vita-chamber). The lone silver trophy that's not hidden from the beginning is "Historian" (Find every audio diary).

Trophy junkies will be pleased to know that bronze trophies are doled out in generous fashion. Early on, these things roll your way like crazy. You'll get one for everything from hacking your first safe to upgrading your first weapon to passing through the first chapter. But not all bronze are so easy. Fully researching enemies only results in a bronze trophies, as does completing the entire game on Hard difficulty. Either way, trophy fiends will collect plenty of bronzes.

Survivor Difficulty
Let's be honest: BioShock isn't the toughest game in the world. In fact, it's pretty damn easy. Between unlimited saves you can create at any moment and Vita-chambers sprinkled generously throughout Rapture, the only thing standing between a decent player and victory is either a Red Ring of Death or a deep-seated allegiance to the philosophies or Ayn Rand. Rather than futzing with the balance of the standard difficulty options, the folks at 2K have gone and added an extra difficulty option for the hardcore lot.

Known as "Survivor difficulty," this setting is described in the title screen as "Every bullet counts." The most noticeable difference is the resiliency of enemies. The first Splicer in the game gave us a good fright when he wouldn't go down with two or three well-placed wrench strikes. No, that little adam junkie took a half-dozen or more swings to kill. Eve also drains more quickly (one shot of the basic plasmids uses nearly the entire gauge), and it seems like ammo is quite a bit more scarce. Atlas' prescribed "one-two punch" of giving a splicer some lightning followed by a wrench hit to finish him off doesn't quite work here. However, when you die and find yourself revived in a Vita-chamber, enemies will still have their health depleted to where it was at when you died. This time, though, only about a third of your life is restored, and very little Eve. Still, if you want to kill a Big Daddy using only a wrench, that's remains a possibility if you've got enough patience. It just takes a whole lot more on Survivor.

All in all, survivor poses a significantly greater challenge for players, but to me it still seems very doable. This isn't Mega Man 9 or Ninja Gaiden here; Survivor probably isn't going to force you to replace your controller ten times over before you finish the campaign. And if you do, well, I'm sure it will be worth it for that gold trophy you unlock.

Why are we argueing whether the 360 or ps3 are better? They're both awsome consoles! We should be arguing over how much the 'Wee' (typo on purpose) sucks

pony on crack that was well said... however for the rest that are arguing i only say this, get a job help the economy and buy all three consoles and possible a couple of hand helds and stop sitting here trying to justify why one console is superior i play all consoles equally and love all equally and all have their problems but i love bioshock and cant wait to play it

Well no GOW is not terrible, what made me buy a 360 is gears of war then halo 3 (the best games on 360) but then it did the three red rings of death thing and bought a ps3 wich is better and don't have any problem with it. But bioshock is better than gears!

  • Ratnutz14

    Posted Sep 29, 2008 11:11 pm PT

one , GOW is a terrible shooter that makes its money off of making everything look wet with its terrible graphics engine, so dont toss that into this mix. and 2 , i agree with the posters who say "gone though like 3 360s." becuase thats just what i went through, 3 of them. and ive had 1 ps3 for over a year and never had one issue. not even a freese. soooo "hate on that"

yeah it is sad to say that the 2x blu ray is slower than the 12x DVD harbored in the 360, but all the same I prefer the PS3 to the 360. My ps3 has never crashed on me while ive gone through like 3 360s... slow and steady wins the race. you know turtle vs hare

mikeyg756 actually there is nothing wrong with the ps3, it's getting all xbox 360 games and xbox 360 didn't get any ps3 game so there is something wrong with xbox 360.
i played it on pc and xbox 360 now i will get it on ps3, it's my second best game (MGS4 first duhhh) tzamisce Blu-ray is faster than DVD and bigger !

  • Mist00

well space issue shouldnt be a problem for me seeing as how i have a 500gb hd lol :p

  • tzamisce

    Posted Sep 29, 2008 3:09 pm PT

    @DannyBoyVai
Blu-ray is slower than DVD. You have to choose to either have an install, so the game can be run in part off of the hard drive, or frequent (and sometimes lengthy) load times. As much as I hate forced installs on a console, I do prefer it to game play interruptions while the next area loads.

eric1996: I would much rather have RROD happen to me maybe once every 2 years (even though it has never happened to me) then get it fixed for free, than have to store my games on my hard drive. Not really true saying Install times is a plus.

WOW! this game isn't intresting anymore. Why the hell has it took so long to come out on PS3?. I have a 360 and have nothing against the PS3 but sometimes i wonder what the hell is going on with that system.

    uhh

"oh yeah well no offence to x-box 360 fans but 360 SUCKS"

    .... fail.

I'm glad BioShock is staying so true to it's original form for the crossover as it's a freakin awesome game that everyone deserves access too, it's too bad wii is so underpowered. anyway, awesome game, the ps3 fanboys will love it and spend the next year saying how much better it is on ps3 than 360 and we'll all die a little on the inside, but smile because bioshock owns.

for all you crying about the install time. just be thankful we dont have the red ring problem. yes xbox doesnt have to install but from working extra hard their machines break down. and with trophies - who cares? they have been out for how long and i dont have one.

I am a devout PS3 owner (40GB) and feel a little let down by this. Installs should be a thing of the past already, if games like Uncharted can manage without one then why can't othr games ?. And furthermore, if they can run it so well and so easily with a little standard disc on a 360, why on earth can they not run it just as well on PS3 with it's greater disc capacity ?. Surely they should be able to run it better with zero installs and since it's been a while since it was first out, slightly better visuals ?. Clearly the PS3 is no joke and has ALOT to offer when people figure out how to get alot from it (Uncharted, MGS4, Killzone 2... stand up please), so why the problem ?. The 360 is a great machine for sure, but with the PS3, I get the feeling some dev's either aren't talented/smart enough to truly figure it out or they simply don't have enough desire to do so. Perhaps a year or two more and we'll see the true capabilities of the PS3 come to light, it has just that bit much more to offer than the 360, I am certain of it. Fanboyism aside, I am certain of it.

@ buttons2010: I agree. I can't understand why I would want to buy this on PS3 if I can get it on 360. Apparently the PS3's capabilities still aren't being grasped hold of, as according to a review I read it looks better on the 360 and it takes up one heck of a lot of memory space for us 40 GB PS3 owners. With no challenge room mode on the disk it's hard to think of a reason why I would buy this game after already beating the Xbox 360 version. Shame...

I never played the game. I hope they release this at $40 because that's the price for the 360 version. It seems highly unlikely however because on the Best Buy website, it's listed as being $60. Guess I'm going to have to wait a little longer to experience this amazing game.

I'm a huge Bioshock fan. I bought it for the xbox before it gave me the ring of death which resulted me in selling my copy of Bioshock and trading in my sorry xbox. Later, I got it for my laptop and it turned out that it doesnt work because I dont have the required rams... Now, I'm getting it for the PS3. I hope that they added other stuffs to the game.

to thomsas10soa: ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?! you have nothing better to do than spoil the game's story for a bunch of people who havent played it? scrolling through comments and seeing that really peeved me. i dont even know if i want to finish the game now. and if i do it will absolutely not be the same. if you are telling the truth and that isnt a joke statement about the end boss, then you are a total tool. not funny man.
