What we heard: Xbox 360 fans got a taste of 2010 this week, courtesy of an apparent leak about next year's eagerly awaited sci-fi shooter, Halo: Reach. The report originated on the Major League Gaming forums (registration required) with user "ToM MoReLLo"--who initially wrote his name all over the screens. Since then, the leak has turned into a spigot on the informational free-for-all that is the NeoGAF forums, which has posted subsequent details.
The legitimate-looking screens are allegedly of a very early build of the game, with unfinished graphics possibly based on a new engine. One level appears to show space combat, but the rest are on land--presumably on the game's titular planet, which was the setting of the first Halo novel, Halo: The Fall of Reach.
The book's plot chronicled a Covenant invasion of a United Nations Space Command (UNSC) fortress world which was home to the program to develop SPARTAN super-soldiers--such as Halo series hero the Master Chief. It was also the site of a secret archeological dig which uncovered an ancient artifact from the Forerunners--the Halo-building ancient race which are worshipped as gods by the Covenant. Unsurprisingly, the multiracial empire of religious zealots want the artifact for themselves, and invade en masse to get it.
The missions described in the leak appear to fit into the events of the Fall of Reach, with both having multiple male and female SPARTANs attempting to gain control of Reach's planetary defense grid. Halo: Reach will apparently also feature some search-and-rescue levels of the original Halo game (i.e. go find space marines who crashed their dropship). It will also feature some infiltration and sniper-focused modes a la ODST, including one where Covenant forces fight with some of Reach's more aggressive wildlife.
The screens also show some convincing-looking Halo: Reach-branded menus--which indicate it will have a "privacy" switch to turn off drop-in co-op play. Another in-game screen appears to show four health bars by a radar screen, likely showing the status of co-operative players or possibly non-player characters.
Several Halo: Reach weapons are also revealed in the screens. One new addition is the needler carbine which shoots three needles that explode once stuck in an opponent, provided said opponent's shields are down. A tweaked version of Halo 2's battle rifle will also be returning, sporting scoped single-shot action and a 12-shot clip. The assault rifle, needler, and SPARTAN laser also look set to return, along with the Warthog vehicle, which will come in a new missile-launching variant.

Bogus or not bogus?: The screens look too detailed and information is a bit precise for this leak to be bogus. And with the Halo: Reach beta coming in early 2010, anyone who bought the beta-key equipped Halo 3: ODST won't have that much longer to wait.

Kameo 2 killed off?

What we heard: Microsoft is expected to launch its camera-based motion-sensing device currently known as Project Natal in 2010. As software support will factor heavily into the success of the Xbox 360 add-on, the publisher has already signaled its intent to have its internal studios heavily back Project Natal. Last month, Peter Molyneux confirmed that Fable III will make use of the device, and Microsoft has indicated through a host of job listings that it is building out an all-new studio dedicated to Project Natal development.
Of course, Banjo-Kazooie developer Rare, which Microsoft purchased in 2002, is also at work on Project Natal software. However, according to CVG, the studio's Natal development has apparently come at the expense of a sequel to the Xbox 360 launch title Kameo: Elements of Power. Citing unnamed sources, the site reports that Microsoft also ceased Kameo 2 development due to disappointing sales of the critically praised original.
CVG's sources went on to note that Kameo 2 was taken out of the development pipeline around the time that the publisher restructured Rare earlier this year. At that time, Microsoft Game Studios reps declined to comment on whether the restructuring effort would affect any in-development projects. However, the publisher did indicate that it would be "implementing a new approach to current projects in the pipeline."
The official story: Microsoft had not responded to a request for comment as of press time.
Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus. According to the NPD Group, the original Kameo has sold just over 300,000 units in the US since its November 2005 launch despite being offered at a lower price point than normal 360 titles. That figure is markedly lower than even Rare's other launch title, Perfect Dark Zero, which has moved some 655,000 units over the same period of time, according to NPD.

Dead Space 2 due in 2010?

What we heard: Electronic Arts has yet to officially announce a follow-up to 2008's acclaimed Dead Space for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, but developer Visceral Games has ostensibly already begun staffing up for it. Last month, EA began accepting applications to work on a sequel, saying "the game is in the later stages of preproduction, ready for production in the next few months, with many of the navigational and combat mechanics in place."
Given the advanced state of preparations for Dead Space 2's full-blown development, it's conceivable the game could launch by late next year. That window appeared to have been confirmed today when, as part of a Halloween-themed feature on horror games, Reuters reported that Dead Space 2 is indeed shipping next year. The news service offered no other details on the unannounced sequel, nor did it attribute EA as the source of its information.
The Dead Space franchise has had no problems securing critical plaudits, but getting those high review scores to translate into blockbuster sales has been a different story altogether. In May, EA said that the original Dead Space had sold more than 1.4 million units worldwide, a figure the publisher previously deemed satisfactory. However, its Wii prequel, Dead Space Extraction, has experienced a slower start. According to the NPD Group, the game shifted just 9,200 units during its first week at retail in the US.
The official story: "This comment by the Reuters reporter is speculative," an EA representative told GameSpot. "There is no announcement for a Dead Space sequel (or in this case, prequel) beyond Dead Space Extraction."
Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus that EA has formally announced Dead Space 2, or that the game is confirmed for a 2010 release. However, given that the publisher has previously said that a Dead Space sequel is well into development, it will likely arrive next year.

Next Grand Theft Auto teased in Episodes from Liberty City?

What we heard: An increasing number of gamers paging through the manual of the critically acclaimed Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City are noticing something eye-catching in its third-to-last page. It's a small mock ad (pictured) for the fictional film, Liberty City, It's Over, an apparent parody of the metropolis-focused short compilation movies Paris, J'taime and New York, I Love You.
In its center, the ad shows the cover art from Grand Theft Auto IV inside a torn-asunder heart--a sign some are taking to mean that the Ballad of Gay Tony is the last title of this GTA generation set in Liberty City. Then, below the title, are the words "Next Stop" above a rip in the poster--a phrase some are taking as a cue to the franchise's future direction.
Inside the rip is part of a blue-gray and yellow image that somewhat resembles the color palette of Los Santos, the Los Angeles facsimile in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. It could also be that of Vice City, the Miami clone featured in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The fact that the poster also mentions the film is "coming in March" has some people wondering if that's the date when the next GTA will be announced.
Yes, the leap is pretty tenuous, and could just be another example of the random, wacky humor that is the GTA series' trademark. However, it has been shown that Rockstar loves to hide clues of its future plans in advance. One example is the Impossible Trinity achievement in Grand Theft Auto IV, where the protagonists of the two Xbox 360 expansions--Johnny Klebitz and Luis Lopez--meet the main game's protagonist, Niko Bellic.
Another reason the ad is getting so much attention is that Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter said he expects the next installment in the GTA series next year. In a note sent to investors in early September, he said he expects the next full GTA game to arrive by the 2010 holiday season. He also expects Episodes from Liberty City to sell between 1 and 1.5 million units domestically, a prediction that--if realized--shows that demand for GTA games is as strong as ever.
The official story: Rockstar did not respond to requests for comment.
Bogus or not bogus?: Too little to go on. However, there's no doubt Rockstar is making a new GTA. And with San Andreas and Vice City being two of the best-selling games of the decade, Rockstar founders Sam and Dan Houser would be foolish not to revisit those locales as they did Liberty City.

Netflix playing on Wii 'very soon'?

Source: In a post on his blog, tech analyst Dan Rayburn said he'd received confirmation that Nintendo is already testing Netflix streaming for the Wii, with a release possible later this year.
What we heard: In his relatively brief blog entry, Rayburn said he'd received screenshots of Netflix up and running on the Wii. He added that after some effort, he received confirmation that the shots were authentic from someone involved in the project and that Nintendo is testing the Netflix service on its console for release "very soon."
The rumor of Netflix coming to the Wii is nothing new. In June, Netflix sent out a customer survey to gauge interest in a Wii version of its streaming video service. Months earlier, the company posted a job opening for an engineer to oversee work on a variety of gaming platforms.
Just last month, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said it was the company's plan to eventually get his movie-rental company's streaming video service on all consoles. And with this week's announcement that Netflix is indeed arriving on the PlayStation 3, Nintendo's latest hardware is the last remaining console without official Netflix support. (Although it's not officially released yet, a Wii-compatible version of the third-party PC program PlayOn is in public beta and allows users to stream video from Netflix, as well as sites like Hulu and YouTube, to Nintendo's console.)
The biggest reason to doubt Rayburn's post is probably in his explanation of the Netflix launch's timing.
"What I'm hearing is that Nintendo originally planned to bring the Netflix service to the Wii before the end of this year, which still might take place, but that Nintendo is also considering holding off on the Netflix service until they release their next generation Wii HD unit in early 2010," Rayburn said.
Like Netflix on the Wii, the rumor of an HD-capable version of Nintendo's hardware has popped up multiple times in the past. Even putting aside the question of whether Nintendo would ever abandon its blue ocean strategy and compete with Microsoft and Sony on one of the biggest advantages their hardware has over the Wii, the "early 2010" time frame seems incredibly soon for the launch of an as-yet-unannounced new console.
However, as Nintendo demonstrated earlier today with the announcement of the DSi LL, the publisher has in large part successfully kept hardware revisions under its hat. Previously, when Square Enix's CEO recently talked about the next Wii, he pegged it as a 2011 release, as did a rumor about the system from last year. In his own note about the possibility of a Wii HD, Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter suggested a 2010 launch, though he didn't specify when.
The official story: Representatives with Netflix and Nintendo had not returned requests for comment as of press time.
Bogus or not bogus?: Barring unforeseen technical difficulties, Netflix on the Wii is decidedly not bogus. As for Rayburn, some of the info he's been given is suspect, but the Netflix tidbit isn't so far-fetched.

Modern Warfare 2 massacre sequence confirmed, skippable

SPOILER WARNING: The story below contains information that reveals major plot details about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The game's developer, Infinity Ward, is recommending a total media blackout for those who wish to play the game without any prior knowledge of its story.
Source: Leaked video viewable (for now) on CNN's user-submitted iReport section and on Mapmodnews.com. The same video has been pulled from YouTube "due to a copyright claim by Activision Games Inc," indicating its authenticity.
What we heard: In every trailer released for Modern Warfare 2--including the almost image-free teaser released at the 2009 Game Developers Conference--one event has loomed large. Each trailer depicts a group of Russian ultranationalist terrorists massacring civilians at an airport with assault weapons.
Now, footage has leaked that appears to show the game will indeed depict the massacre, reminiscent of last year's mass killings in Mumbai, India, which left nearly 200 people dead. In a move sure to ignite controversy, the footage indicates the game will cast players as one of the killers, having them shoot civilians en masse from a first-person view.
Several sites have posted footage showing the same group of five terrorists (including the player), wearing body armor over business suits, as has been shown in every trailer for the game. (See screen comparisons, which have leaked, lower-resolution footage on the bottom.) The killers first emerge from an elevator, as the sound cues in the very first trailer portrayed. Once out, they open fire indiscriminately into a crowd by the security lines before moving up a series of body-draped escalators shown in the "Infamy" trailer released earlier this month.
From there, the terrorists move through a shopping level--with the player dispatching wounded civilians squirming on the ground--before moving down another escalator. Then, the scene shifts to the airport's tarmac where they encounter a group of security personnel under a large passenger jet with red, white, and blue stripes. The same jet appears to be shown in the "Infamy" trailer but from the opposite viewpoint of the security personnel moving to stop the killings.
At that point, the leaked footage ends. However, despite being of low quality, the footage bears several telltale signs that indicate it is authentic--or an extremely elaborate mod. First is the fact the terrorists shown look identical to those in the last two official Modern Warfare 2 trailers. Second is the fact the blurry subtitles appear to show the name "Makarov"--the last name of the game's primary antagonist, Vladimir Makarov.
Third is the onscreen heads-up display, which appears to be the same as that in preview versions of the game shown to the press. Fourth are indications that the footage came from the same European source that posted video of a third-person multiplayer mode in Modern Warfare 2. Reflections on the screen showing another monitor and PlayStation 3 menu cues are the same as footage that appeared on YouTube before being pulled.
That same yanked third-person footage was confirmed as being legitimate in Twitter postings by Robert Bowling, director of communications for Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward. In a tweet today, Bowling also indicated that footage from the game's campaign had leaked out. In response to a message from a user asking "Do you think the leaked SP footage is too much?" he responded, "I know man. Media Blackout! I'll keep this Twitter feed and the official Infinity Ward YouTube spoiler free. Singleplayer leaks suck."
Interestingly, the footage shows a multiplayer icon over another terrorist's head, indicating the level could be played in the game's Special Ops co-op mode. One rumor circulating is that the player will be an undercover operative who is forced to participate in the massacre or blow his cover.
The official story: Reps for Modern Warfare 2's publisher, Activision, had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.
Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus. Infinity Ward is known for taking major risks to surprise its audience, and comparisons between official Modern Warfare 2 trailers and the leaked footage leave little doubt of the latter's legitimacy.
The bigger question is will the sequence impact Modern Warfare 2 sales? Sure, players can commit similar mass killings at any time in almost every Grand Theft Auto game. However, the brutal nature of the airport massacre and the ever-sensitive subject of terrorism might prove a toxic mix, in terms of publicity, if the mainstream media decides to pounce on it.
[UPDATE] Though US Activision reps remain mum on the matter, a UK spokesperson confirmed the leaked footage as authentic to game site VG247. The spokesperson also offered the following statement from Activision:
"The scene establishes the depth of evil and the cold-bloodedness of a rogue Russian villain and his unit. By establishing that evil, it adds to the urgency of the player's mission to stop them."
"Players have the option of skipping over the scene. At the beginning of the game, there are two 'checkpoints' where the player is advised that some people may find an upcoming segment disturbing. These checkpoints can't be disabled."
"Modern Warfare 2 is a fantasy action game designed for intense, realistic gameplay that mirrors real life conflicts, much like epic, action movies. It is appropriately rated 18 for violent scenes, which means it is intended for those who are 18 and older." (The BBFC 18 rating in the UK is the equivalent of M for Mature in the US.)
[UPDATE2] Activision US has now issued the following statement. "The leaked footage was taken from a copy of game that was obtained illegally and is not representative of the overall gameplay experience in Modern Warfare 2. "
"Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 features a deep and gripping storyline in which players face off against a terrorist threat dedicated to bringing the world to the brink of collapse. The game includes a plot involving a mission carried out by a Russian villain who wants to trigger a global war. In order to defeat him, the player infiltrates his inner circle. The scene is designed to evoke the atrocities of terrorism. "
"At the beginning of the game, players encounter a mandatory 'checkpoint' in which they are warned that an upcoming segment may contain disturbing elements and they can choose not to engage in the gameplay that involves this scene. Consistent with its content, the game has been given an "M" for Mature by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board. The rating is prominently displayed on the front and back of the packaging, as well as in all advertising."

X-Com confirmed for 360/PC, Firaxis working on turn-based sequel?

What we heard: In November 2007, rumors surfaced that 2K Boston was developing a reboot of the classic X-Com series. Since then, only a few breadcrumbs of information have leaked out. In March, studio head Ken Levine expressed his admiration for the tactical sci-fi franchise and admitted to recently playing its poorly received last installment, the 2001 shooter spin-off X-Com: Enforcer (pictured top). In August, job listings indicated that 2K Boston is working on an unidentified shooter, raising the possibility of another action title set in the X-Com universe.
Such a scenario appears to have been confirmed this week, when Superannuation dug up the resume of a 3D artist who worked for 2K Australia from January 2007 until April 2008. The resume lists the artist as working on two projects during that time: "Bioshock (Xbox 360, PC Game)" and "X-Com (Xbox 360, PC Game)."
The resume's cut-and-dried confirmation was obscured somewhat by subsequent Twitter messages from Superannuation's proprietor that pointed to a second X-Com in the works. The tweets read: "Apparently, there's a rumor that X-Com is being developed by Firaxis, which I wouldn't find hard to believe. I swear that I read they're working on a sci-fi game somewhere...The rumor is that there's two X-Com games--[an] FPS from Irrational and [a] turn-based one from Firaxis."
As it turns out, rumors of a Firaxis-developed reboot of X-Com go back to 2001. That's when Atari parent Infogrames bought X-Com publisher MicroProse, the birthplace of the wildly popular Civilization series cocreated by Firaxis cofounder Sid Meier. During a 2004 video interview promoting the relaunch of Pirates, Meier told GameSpot that Firaxis had entered into a long-term agreement with Atari to retain the X-com IP. According to the US Patent and Trademark Office, the X-Com license transferred to Take-Two when it bought Firaxis in 2005.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that 2K Boston is working on a new X-Com game of some sort, with a shooter spin-off being a strong possibility. As far as a second turn-based X-Com game from Firaxis is concerned, it would be the stuff of old-school gamers' dreams. And, as Fallout 3's massive sales proved, a critically acclaimed reboot of a classic franchise can reap massive rewards.

The Who: Rock Band set for 2010?

Source: The Who lead singer Roger Daltry told Massachusetts paper The Republican that The Who will be getting its own Rock Band. When an interviewer brought up the recently released The Beatles: Rock Band, Daltry said, "The game, yeah, yeah, they're going to be doing a Who one next year. There is one planned."
What we heard: It makes some sense that The Who would be next in line for the Beatles treatment. In addition to being one of the biggest classic rock acts out there, The Who has been tied to the Rock Band franchise almost since day one. When Harmonix originally announced full album downloads, The Who's Who's Next was the first one revealed, even if technical difficulties forced it to be scrapped in favor of a sampler of the band's hits. And in a promotional push for the sequel, the legendary British rockers played a surprise set at Harmonix and MTV Games' big E3 2008 Rock Band 2 party.
On the other hand, the report contained no more details about the game, leaving some question as to whether Daltry spoke of a stand-alone title like The Beatles: Rock Band, a retail-exclusive offering like the AC/DC track pack, or simply another round of downloadable content. A dedicated Who Rock Band game would also raise questions as to which songs would be included in the setlist. Versions of many of the band's biggest hits are already available in existing Rock Band games, including "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Pinball Wizard," "Baba O' Riley," "My Generation," "Who Are You," and "Behind Blue Eyes."
There's a long history of loose-lipped musicians breaking Guitar Hero and Rock Band news in advance of official word, and a slightly shorter history of them flubbing the details in the process. When Joe Perry spilled the beans on Activision's plans for Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, he said it would be Guitar Hero IV, not a stand-alone spin-off to the series. Then there's the Guitar Hero Jimi Hendrix and Rock Band Green Day downloadable content packs, which were initially reported to be full games by Slash and Billie Joe Armstrong, respectively.
While Daltry's statement about the game left room for interpretation, his endorsement of rhythm games was more concrete.
"Anything that gets nonmusical people interested in music is wonderful," Daltry said. "In my opinion, music is our last true great freedom. They can burn our books, they can burn our paintings, but they can't stop us singing and making music."
The official story: A Harmonix representative declined to comment.
Bogus or not bogus?: Plans change, and interviews with musicians are often as open to interpretation as the songs they perform. Another wave of downloadable content for The Who is a possibility. However, given some analysts' disappointment with The Beatles: Rock Band's sales and the numerous Who songs already available in Rock Band, the idea of a stand-alone game for the band looks less appealing than it once might have.

GoldenEye remake coming to the Wii in 2010?

What we heard: As one of the best-rated games in history, Rare's GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64 ranks high on many gamers' nostalgia list. However, despite occasional indications to the contrary, Rare's hallmark first-person shooter has yet to find its way to any of the downloadable shooters. Licensing issues are the cause for the omission, ranging from Microsoft's purchase of the studio from Nintendo in 2002 to Activision's acquisition of the James Bond game rights from EA in 2006.
However, it now appears as if headway has been made in those licensing issues, on some level at least. As spotted by Superannuation, the since-pulled online resume for a Eurocom Entertainment Software animator indicates that Activision is prepping a new GoldenEye game for the Wii in 2010. Eurocom has contributed to a number of Bond titles over the years, including Quantum of Solace, James Bond 007: Nightfire, The World Is Not Enough, and James Bond Jr.
That Activision is working a new James Bond title is no surprise. In December 2008, word emerged that Project Gotham Racing and Blur creator Bizarre Creations was at work on an original, vehicle-based Bond game unassociated with any film for a 2010 launch. Activision will also likely have a tie-in ready to launch alongside the next Daniel Craig-led Bond film in 2011.
Notably, as Eurocom has primarily handled development on Bond games for ancillary platforms, it remains unclear if the GoldenEye in question is one and the same as the game being developed by Bizarre Creations. Of course, that game hasn't been officially confirmed by Activision, either.

DSi Speak Channel accidentally revealed?

What we heard: Last November, Nintendo launched the Wii Speak peripheral both solo and bundled with Animal Crossing: City Folk. The peripheral incorporated a microphone to allow Wii owners to chat with up to three friends via the Wii Speak Channel, which features participants' Miis lip-syncing their conversations.
Though Animal Crossing: City Folk sold nearly a million units domestically, Wii Speak was not the sensation that Nintendo had hoped it would be. However, that appears to have not stopped the company from readying a portable version of the service. This week, several outlets spotted something strange on the Nintendo.com support page for an error encountered while using prepaid points cards on the DSi Shop.
The page read, "To redeem a Nintendo DSi Download Ticket number, such as for the Nintendo DSi Speak Channel, enter the number off the Nintendo DSi Download Ticket in 'Settings and Features' off of the main Nintendo DSi Shop page, then select 'Nintendo DSi Download Ticket.'" (Emphasis added.) Nintendo has since removed any mention of the DSi Speak Channel from the page.
The official story: US Nintendo did not respond to requests for comment, but a UK rep told CVG that "It's rumor, as nothing has been announced."

Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus, given the number of reports and the clarity of the language. Given that the PSP has Skype, adding a VoIP service to the Wi-Fi enabled DSi seems like a no-brainer. Hopefully it won't force gamers to use the DS's notoriously uncomfortable headset, currently used for in-game chat on select titles.

Transmission Games shuts down

What We Heard: Things weren't looking too good for Melbourne-based Transmission Games after the news earlier this month that the developer had laid off 28 staff members after an unnamed publisher pulled support for one of the studio's titles.
Now news has surfaced that Transmission Games has shut down completely, with the remaining staff being made redundant.
News reports are claiming the studio has now gone into receivership, with an appointed administrator taking over.
Transmission Games is responsible for recent titles, including Ashes Cricket 2009 and Heroes Over Europe; it is (or was) one of Australia's biggest developers.
The Official Story: Calls to the Transmission Games office and to the CEO, Mike Fegan, were not returned as of press time.
Bogus or Not Bogus?: A Transmission Games spokesperson has confirmed the reports are true.
[UPDATE]: GameSpot AU got in touch with Transmission Games, who confirmed that the studio has gone into voluntary liquidation. However, a Transmission Games spokesperon said the studio was not yet ready to make an official statement.

New Ghost Recon dubbed Predator?

What we heard: Much has been made of Splinter Cell: Conviction's MIA status, but Ubisoft's Ghost Recon franchise has been off the reservation for what's quickly becoming just as long. With 2007's acclaimed Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 being the most recent installment in the franchise, Ubisoft said in January that a new Ghost Recon would arrive by the end of March 2010. However, it didn't take long before the publisher pushed that game to its next fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2011.
However, it now looks as if Ghost Recon's delay may not follow the long and winding road of its Tom Clancy cousin. Yesterday, a listing for "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Predator" on multiple platforms appeared in the Australian Classification Board's online database.
Ghost Recon Predator received an MA 15+ rating from the Australian board, the strictest rating allowable before classification is refused and the game is banned. Australian's software rating board has developed a reputation for being notoriously strict with its ratings guidelines, having denied classification to a number of high-profile titles upon initial submission, including Left 4 Dead 2, Fallout 3, and F.E.A.R. 2. (Only films can reach the board's maximum R18+ rating.)
Beyond the subtitle, the Australian classification offers few clues as to the nature of Ubisoft's latest Ghost Recon effort. Thus far, the publisher has been mum on what gamers can expect from the new first-person shooter, saying only that it would not be a continuation of the Advanced Warfighter arc. The rating also did not specify which platforms Ghost Recon Predator would appear on.

Nvidia, ATI win next-gen DS, Xbox contracts?

What we heard: Hardware rumor-mongers got a twofer this week involving the next generation of Microsoft's Xbox console and Nintendo's DS handheld. The latter came courtesy of a report on hardware blog Bright Side News (BSN), which reported that Nvidia has landed the contract to provide the chipsets for the DS and DSi's as-yet-unannounced successor.

"According to our confidential sources, Nintendo is going to use Tegra System-on-Chip processor for the successor of DS/DSi handheld console," reported the site. Currently, the Tegra line powers a series of small computer and multimedia devices, including the just-released Zune HD, which will be getting 3D games later this year.
Reportedly, the graphics chip-maker offered the least complicated option for the next-gen DS. "Unlike the current design, Nvidia offered a single-chip proposal to Nintendo, a company famous for keeping the hardware platform absolutely simple." The current generation of DS Lites and DSi's use two ARM-architecture chips to handle both graphics and processing.
BSN expects the new DS to be unveiled at the 2010 Tokyo Game Show next fall, around the same time Microsoft is expected to launch the Xbox 360's motion-sensing system, Project Natal. However, it was the 360's successor that was the subject of another report involving Nvidia's archrival, AMD-owned ATI.
Tech blog Fudzilla is citing unnamed "industry sources" as confirming Microsoft has struck a deal with ATI to provide graphics processors (GPUs) for the next generation of Xboxes. The Canadian chip firm currently supplies the GPUs for both the Wii and Xbox 360, with Nvidia supplying Sony with the PlayStation 3's RSX graphics processor.
Fudzilla's sources also echo analysts, executives, and developers as saying the next generation of hardware won't arrive anytime soon. "The consoles refresh [sic] was supposed to happen in 2010 but due to the recession both Microsoft and Sony have decided to push its plans for 2012 [sic] and keep the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 alive for more than it was originally planned."

Bogus or not bogus?: Both sound plausible. Nintendo will be looking for higher-fidelity graphics for the next DS, and anyone who has seen a Zune HD knows what Tegra can provide them. As for the Xbox rumor, no one has blamed the 360's woes on ATI's GPU, instead pointing the finger at Microsoft's design choices. So having the software giant reenlist the hardware provider seems completely reasonable.

What we heard: That Insomniac Games would be working on a new PlayStation 3 title isn't a particularly big shocker. After all, the Burbank, California-based independent developer has made its bones exclusively through Sony's PlayStation platforms from its inception, establishing such franchises as Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and, most recently, Resistance.
In tandem with being named the fifth best place to work in California, Insomniac revealed in March that it had another PS3 exclusive in the works. And judging by a billboard emblazoned with "Resistance 3" spotted on a Shreveport, Louisiana, film set over the weekend by a NeoGAF forum-goer, it appears that said title will be a new installment in Insomniac's alternate-history first-person shooter series.
The billboard in question will purportedly appear in Battle: Los Angeles, which, belying its name, is set to begin filming this fall in the Shreveport-Baton Rouge area. While a release date for the film has yet to be confirmed, industry sources such as IMDB.com list the movie with an early 2011 premiere. Should this date hold true, the marketing campaign indicates that Resistance 3 will see release sometime during the first part of 2011.
Notably, the billboard also gives a small clue on the plot of the title. In the past, Insomniac has used the "A" in Resistance's titles to display a landmark from some pivotal location in the game. The original Resistance: Fall of Man featured London's Big Ben, while Resistance 2 showed San Francisco's Bay Bridge and Resistance: Retribution for the PSP displayed Paris' Eiffel Tower. As for Resistance 3, the A in the billboard clearly depicts the Statue of Liberty, indicating New York City will be a prominent locale.

Insomniac's Resistance franchise has been a commercial and critical success for Sony, so it seems to be a foregone conclusion that the studio would return for a third console installment. However, considering that Resistance 2 shipped at the end of 2008, a 2011 release window seems a bit longer than a normal development cycle would call for.

EA's Jack the Ripper a heroic undead-slayer?

What we heard: Some 121 years after they were committed, the Jack the Ripper murders remain a subject of interest. One reason is that the case was never solved, despite a massive effort by London's Scotland Yard, then (and still) considered one of the best police forces in the world. Another reason was the grisly nature of the crimes, which saw at least five prostitutes horrifically mutilated with surgical skill.
While posterity will remember the Jack the Ripper case as a grotesque chapter of the Victorian Era, unconfirmed reports say a unique historical reimagining may be on the way--in game form. Following reports that Visceral Games, the internal Electronic Arts studio behind Dante's Inferno and the forthcoming Dead Space 2, was making a game based on the copyright-free Jack the Ripper scenario, Destructoid is claiming to have the first details on the project.
Surprisingly, the game will not have players hunt down Jack the Ripper--but will have them play him instead. The site cites unnamed sources as saying the Ripper character is in fact a Van Helsing-like "supernatural slayer protecting people from demons, vampires and other evil monsters." To do so, he'll have a variety of weapons and abilities, including being able to slow down time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Trademark filings prove that EA has the intent of doing something game- and Jack the Ripper-related. But whether that entails tearing the entrails out of demon-possessed prostitutes is another matter. The fact that the Grand Theft Auto series allows players to comically murder virtual hookers made it a moral whipping boy in the mainstream media. Given the gory nature of Visceral's titles, any celebration of one of history's most notorious serial killers might prove too controversial.

Microsoft working on Xbox 360 Avatar arcade?

Source: Joystiq reports that Microsoft is looking into creating a virtual arcade for players' Avatar characters, citing a consumer survey sent in by a tipster.
What we heard: There isn't much to go on in the Joystiq report, aside from a couple of pictures of the supposed Avatar arcade and a question asking users to pick a name that would most encourage them "to purchase the product."
Fortunately, the pictures themselves offer some clues as to what's going on. They show a handful of Avatars standing at Atari-branded arcade cabinets, similar to the virtual game parlors in PlayStation Home. However, instead of containing joysticks and buttons, the control panels on each of the cabinets have been replaced by Atari 2600 machines. All but one of the marquees on the cabinets are unreadable, with the lone legible title being Baseball.
It isn't just Atari on display in the Avatar arcade, however. Partially obscured banners hanging from the wall suggest that Intellivision games like Shark! Shark! and Star Strike will also be available for play in the Avatar arcade. (A version of Star Strike was also released for the Atari 2600.)
Along the bottom of the screenshots are a series of nearly unreadable button prompts, apparently indicating that players will be able to customize their own arcades, change themes, and edit which machines are in the room.
The significance of an Avatar arcade is debatable. Even if everything in the Joystiq article is accurate, this could be something as mundane as a shell from which players can buy other games (like Hasbro Family Game Night), or as big as a virtual space for Avatars to congregate, Microsoft's answer to PlayStation Home.
The official story: An inquiry to Atari wasn't returned as of press time, but a Microsoft rep said the company "can't comment on rumor or speculation."
Bogus or not bogus?: Looks a little complex to be completely bogus. The fact that Sony is already doing something in Home provides motivation for the move, as does the chance to remonetize old Atari 2600 games. (With its listing revenues, the publisher could use the cash.) And with Microsoft already selling Avatar toys, a virtual arcade would be a logical next step down microstransaction lane.

Warcraft movie chronicling Rise of the Lich King in 2011?

What we heard: Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft universe is nothing if not sprawling, thanks to some 15 years of storyline development across games and novels. The developer's expansive narrative tradition offers a plethora of options for the upcoming movie set in the Warcraft universe. However, as of August's BlizzCon 2009, director Sam Raimi had not announced any details about what parts of Blizzard lore would be the foundation for his film's script.
Now, though, it appears as if details on the Legendary Pictures-backed production have slipped out, courtesy of popular online movie database IMDB. According to the silver-screen depository, the upcoming Warcraft film now bears the subtitle "The Rise of the Lich King," indicating it will draw from the same source material as 2008's best-selling World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King.
The Lich King has proven to be fertile source material for Blizzard. Aside from the WOW expansion, the story of the Lich King was handled in Christie Golden's novel Arthas: Rise of the Lich King, which was named to the New York Times' Best-seller list within a week of going on sale earlier this year.
As its title implies, the novel tells an expanded version of the human storyline seen in Blizzard's 2002 real-time strategy game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and the Wrath of the Lich King WOW expansion. It sees the benevolent paladin prince Arthas Menethil corrupted by the runeblade Frostmourne and turned into an undead lord of unspeakable evil.
One other point of interest from the IMDB listing, Warcraft: The Rise of the Lich King now bears an expected release date of 2011. As part of BlizzCon 2007, Legendary CEO Thomas Tull said that the film would be live-action with a $100 million budget and would be out by 2009--a release date it obviously missed.

Bogus or not bogus?: While often trusted by industry professionals, IMDB is far from a reliable source, given that information can easily be added to the database without a thorough vetting of the material. As such, bogus that anything is official, though the Lich King storyline does seem to be working out pretty well for Blizzard. The critically hailed expansion sold over 2.8 million copies worldwide in less than 24 hours when it launched last November. As of the end of August, it had sold nearly 2 million units in the US alone.

PSP digital game rental coming?

What we heard: Sony's decision to remove the UMD disc media reader from the PSP Go has provoked its fair share of controversy. On the one hand, by eliminating the UMD drive, Sony was able to substantially reduce the size of its device, as well as improve battery life, among other enhancements. However, without the drive, PSP Go purchasers will be unable to use their previously purchased PSP games, and they won't be able to rent new games, either.
While Sony has stated that it does not plan on offering a way for gamers to digitize their PSP libraries, the publisher may be cooking up a solution for those looking to rent PSP games. First spotted by gaming blog The Retail Gamer and confirmed by GameSpot, Sony has added "Starts," "Expires," and "Hours Left" options to the information pane within games (pictured, top).
Notably, Sony floated just such an idea earlier this year. In May, a confidential Web survey surfaced online indicating that Sony was considering a subscription service that would let gamers rent PSP games. "The service will enable you to download a fixed number of games during your subscription period...[which] might renew weekly, monthly, or for some other time period," read the document.
Further, the menu fields are identical to those found in PlayStation Store video content (pictured, bottom), which can be purchased or rented through the PlayStation Network. With video content rentals, the start date is generated at the time of purchase and gamers have two weeks to watch the content before it expires. However, once a piece of content is activated, gamers only have a 24-hour window before the content expires.

Fable III to incorporate Natal?

What we heard: At its E3 2009 press briefing, Microsoft revealed that Lionhead was working on Milo, a simulation game that uses the motion--and emotion--sensing qualities of Project Natal. Two months later at GamesCom in Germany, Molyneux took the wraps off Fable III, another Xbox 360 exclusive from the Microsoft-owned, UK-based studio.
Given Molyneux's involvement with both Fable III and Natal, it stands to reason that the former might feature some connectivity with the latter. However, the GameKings interviewer expressed regret at having read that the game wouldn't be using Natal. The journalist said he felt it would be ideal for Fable III's gameplay, which casts players as a king passing judgment on subjects.
After joking about how talking about Natal projects could get him assassinated, Molyneux clarified things. "Let me get one thing straight. I have not said that we are not going to have Natal in Fable III." [Emphasis added.]
Then, motioning as though he were holding a 360 controller, Molyneux continued: "All I've really said is that it's a controller experience, but that doesn't mean there isn't going to be any Natal. Do you really think, knowing me, as maybe you do over the years, that I wouldn't want to use something like Natal?! I mean, that's just mad, man!"

Bogus or not bogus?: Probably not bogus. Microsoft would love to have a first-party game of Fable III's stature use Natal in order to spur sales when it launches next year. And, by his own account, Molyneux wants to use the technology.
However, it may be a while until the public learns anything concrete. Before being asked about Natal, Molyneux bragged about how much he hasn't said about Fable III. "I haven't even told you what we're doing on the gameplay side," boasted the veteran developer. "My trick with the press is to leave the most exciting thing for later. There's plenty of gameplay stuff coming."

DJ Qbert scratching up DJ Hero 2?

What we heard: Having already rocked over $2 billion out of Guitar Hero, Activision is expanding its rhythm game empire into other musical genres. On October 27, it will go after hip-hop, techno, and club-music fans' dollars with DJ Hero, a turntable-peripheral based title from its UK-based studio, FreeStyle Games. In development for the Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 2, the game will feature such prominent acts as Daft Punk, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, J.Period, Z-Trip, Grandmaster Flash, and the late DJ AM. (The game will also feature emcees Eminem and Jay-Z.)
Though it remains to be seen how many consumers will plunk down $120 for the standard edition of DJ Hero--let alone $200 for the renegade edition--a sequel is apparently already in the works. GI.biz sources claim that "at least one independent UK games developer is already liaising with Activision's FreeStyleGames on DJ Hero 2."
GI.biz also reports that groundbreaking turntablist DJ Qbert has "been approached" to be in the sequel. In the 1990s, DJ Qbert (real name Richard Quitevis) was a founding member of the San Francisco Bay Area group the Invisibl Skratch Piklz and was a three-time victor at the DMC World DJ Championship. If confirmed, it would be the third game appearance for Qbert, whose music was used in the original Tony Hawk's Underground, in which the DJ was also a playable character, and FreQuency, the 2001 PlayStation 2 rhythm title from original Guitar Hero developer Harmonix.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that a DJ Hero sequel is assured. According to the NPD Group, rhythm game genre revenues are down 46 percent through August 2009, meaning Activision will be looking at every opportunity to exploit--and re-exploit--any untapped markets. Whether DJ Qbert will be part of a future project, however, remains to be seen.
