Product listing for Activision's next first-person shooter sequel spotted on retailer's French website, suggests return to Cold War-era combat.
The next Call of Duty game is apparently returning to the Cold War-era intrigue of 2010's Call of Duty: Black Ops. GameBlog reports that the French site of retail giant Amazon posted (and then pulled) a product page for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.
Activision had already said it would have another installment in the Call of Duty series on shelves this year, but the publisher has not confirmed its era or setting. Previous Call of Duty games have thrown players into World War II, the Cold War, and current-day antiterrorism efforts around the world.
While Activision didn't confirm the existence of Black Ops 2 directly, GameBlog followed up its story with a report that Activision France contacted the site to demand the news be pulled. GameBlog said it refused to do so, and Activision subsequently disinvited the site from a preview event for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron and canceled advertising campaigns it had planned to run on the site.
The original Black Ops set a bevy of sales records, becoming the best-selling game of all time on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in the US and Europe and racking up $1 billion in revenues in less than two months on sale. Last year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has a ways to go to match Black Ops' overall sales, but it came out of the gates considerably more quickly, hitting the $1 billion mark in just 16 days.

@amaan4ever Damn straight. I don't want the series to go, I just want them to put more effort in to the damn games. It's the same thing every year just in a new box. Although now it will be the same thing twice a year.. I didn't even consider buying MW3 once I'd seen the gameplay.
@ alenth, fair comments made. But as said thousands of people play and enjoy CoD and yeah it is escapist fun and easy to play when all is said and done. However, sometimes on an evening that is all you want from a game. Don't get me wrong and I agree with a lot of people that the franchise is in desperate need of some freshness and it has become way too consolised and restricted from what the original CoD game was about. A return to WWII and a more back to basics approach with less gimicky "kill streaks" is where CoD should go now in my opinion. I do also play meatier stuff mainly RTS's like the Total War franchise & Men of War that require a lot more thought than CoD ever will (so take your points about too much dumbed down gaming) but its nice to have the choice to delve into some mindless shooting every now and then etc. As has been posted in this discussion what else can FPS games really do other than provide a slick (if not predicatable) multiplayer shooter experience and CoD does that better than most.
I don't mind them releasing one last COD like another black ops because I loved just being able to custom my emblem although the slashing sucked balls, then just take a break until the ps4 better system, better graphics, better engine so maybe then they'll get off their lazy asses and put some work that takes two years to make instead of 1 lol

i loved Cod4(still have it and play it), WaW was cool, MW2 is whatever. Black Ops and MW3 lasted a week before i put them on Ebay.

im done with cod games for now. i really liked mw2 which was the first 1 i ever played online. but got sick of it after a few months of black ops. i havent even rented mw3 yet...

If cod4 didnt have so many hackers i would play that before i EVER play this piece of garbage. Original MW was the way to go. I may consider this if they actually upgrade the system of it and not just "update some"

@benjam28 The current strategy with activision is to make 1 day winners without any sense of progression, WoW and COD are good examples of that, people often uses the typical argument "i can't play X because i have Y" "i have a life" "games are not a work and i want fun" because they can't stand to lose or see other people with more progression, these games created a new generation of gamers who need something to exploit or they will cry, i have a job and family to attend but that doesn't mean that i want dumbed down games, you don't need to stay 24/7 on the console to enjoy a game, i've already finished Dark Souls and Demon Souls playing only 4-5 hours a week, Activision just ruins the industry trying to reward players with a false sense of achievment, also casual is a misleading term.
If its Cold War setting I ain't buying it. Where u actually go fight in Afganistan. The story of Blops was stupid. I call Afganistan. Bring us something new Treyarch and Activision I'm telling you. Blops had the best MP but setting was stupid

For all the haters on here, the franchise is still massively popular and thousands play CoD everyday, so it cannot be that bad. I think a lot of people miss the point that there are an awful lot of more casual (I hate that word!) gamers that lead busy lifes, who work full time, have relationships / family and so on etc that will log onto CoD on the odd evening or weekend for a couple of hours fun and escapism (myself included). The CoD is perfect for that. Some of us with hectic schedules and lives cannot log hours and hours into games like Skyrim or even say Total War. CoD in essence is the perfect game for a lot of older gamers, as it runs well on older / mid spec systems and is very easy to play. Think about it and you will realise why the CoD franchise will continue to be popular even though I agree it does need to evolve a little.
Good to see MW3 not selling as much as Black OPS. Now atleast we know its declining like we all hoped for

the good news is that with every annual COD game COD dies just a little bit,so it will eventually self destract and we will be free of COD
