Capcom building Remember Me into 'major franchise'

Publisher says it's looking to build "long-lasting relationship" with developer Dontnod; already planning releases for next-gen consoles.
Capcom's new action game Remember Me won't ship until May 2013, but that has not kept the publisher from already stating its plans for the future of the series. Speaking to Joystiq, Capcom senior producer Mat Hart said the publisher is hoping to work with developer Dontnod Entertainment to spin the game into a series.
"We're looking to build a long-lasting relationship with [Dontnod Entertainment] as a developer, and build [Remember Me] into a major franchise," Hart said.
Hart's statement came in response to a question regarding Capcom's decision to launch the game during May 2013. He explained that it was important for Capcom to launch the game for current-generation consoles, but made it clear that future titles could see release on new systems.
"The thing is, if you leave it too late into next year, then you are starting to straddle that line where you're starting to move into the next-generation consoles," he said. "And what we wanna do is make sure we launch this on the current generation of consoles, to really sell it in, and establish it as a new IP. And then build the franchise out in line with the new consoles coming out."
Capcom announced Remember Me (formerly titled Adrift) this week during Gamescom. A third-person game due out in May 2013 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, Remember Me has players taking on the role of Nilin, an "elite memory hunter." According to Capcom, Nilin not only is a physical threat, but also boasts a special ability that allows her to break into people's minds where she can steal or change memories.

1 Like @s_h_a_d_o what do you mean milking a franchise dry? Sure Capcom made some mistakes but they are far from that. I am actually excited about this, some fresh air among the absurd amount of CoD's and Assassins's Creed's we've been getting lately.
@kazumashadow @s_h_a_d_o Capcom dont milk they just sell you 90% of the product then later come out with a ultimate edition with the other 10% in it.
Oh, come on! Capcom are one of the prime instigators of said stratagem - Lord knows, the perpetually-resurrected corpse of the Resident Evil franchise alone is beginning to stink up the place. :|
@kohle36 @TheeRevolver Actually Ezio is a nice character. Sure the characters and story are not as deep as say, in MGS . Also if Tom Clancy and Brown are so bad, explain to me their success. I mean, Dan Brown pulled of a couple best sellers already and several game franchises carry Tom Clancy's name, including the great Splinter Cell series.
@kazumashadow Yes, I "now" of the marvel called opinion, and was expressing one if you somehow failed to grasp that. @TheeRevolver I realize what it's striving to do, it just fails completely at it.
Don't get me wrong, I like Assassin's Creed because it has really fun gameplay and the level design is actually quite good. But be honest with yourselves - the story vacillates between blandly generic and laughably silly, and the characters are flat, unbelievable and largely unlikeable. I get that most video games aren't exactly the pinnacle of storytelling, but if you really play AC for the writing, I suggest you go read a book. Pretty much any one will do (heck even Clancy and Brown pulled off the odd moment or two).
@kohle36 Sir i understand not everyone nows about this marvel i'm going to tell you so i get it if you don't understand at first. There is this little something called opinion, where some people like something and others don't and quoting AC "nothing is true, everything is permitted" or in simpler terms, you disliking something doesn't make it bad.
@kohle36 lol did you make that up yourself or did you read it from some other narcissistic dbag online. AC has a pretty good story, it doesn't strive to be accurate, just sensational and fun. What's your holy grail of story telling?
1 Like @kazumashadow Sorry to bust your bubble but the story in AC was somewhere between Tom Clancy and Dan Brown. Which is to say, somewhere between wholesale facepalmery and 'mindblowing - for people who know almost nothing about, well, much of anything really'.
@OGKNav Actually i'm not defending it, sorry if it sounded like i was. I'm just saying there are companies way worse than them. But to hell with that all hail Valve and end of story hahah.
1 Like @s_h_a_d_o well sure they made mistakes with the RE franchise but it isn't nearly as abused as Activision has been doing with CoD or Ubisoft (is that right?) with AC (altough they still count with a good storyline). And with RE6 coming i think they still might have a shot at making things right.
lets no hype a second one capcom.. this one looks good, but lets just see how it goes.. it the mean time, start on dragon dogma..:P
I'm all for new, quality IPs. Hopefully this will end up being good and worth turning into a series. Capcom seems to have high-hopes for it.

Planning ahead for the next game will only be good if they weave the plots together, while still ending the first.
I think of Inception, how it left me wanting more...yet I'm glad there is not a sequel.

Great concept, I want to be excited for this game, I'll give it some time.
Why don't they see how it works out first? Like they did with Dragons Dogma, so they can improve it based on reviews and feedback.
I think Capcom's long-term planning department needs a few replacements... While this game sounds interesting, it doesn't seem wise to put so much stock in an untested IP and then continue killing their decades-old, tried and true franchises with crappy releases and negligence.
Believe me, this will be good, (so does with Dragon's Dogma.)
first game always good, new IP always good.
then it will be going mediocre after next sequel.
(just like RE: Raccoon City and Lost Planet 2.)

1 Like It seems like Capcom no matter how great something looks like it can be wants to ruin their games. Why not just start with making Remember Me into as great of a game as it looks to be and not worry about coming out with Super Hyper Turbo Remember Me six months later followed by the Ultimate version 6 months later and the Arcade version 3 months later with on disc DLC on every version. Please Capcom don't screw this one up.
2 Like Stand alone games tend to be better than franchises... I'm dissapointed to hear they're planning to stretch it out until it goes stale before it's even been made.
I love Capcom's fighting games...but after what they've done with Resident Evil and what they haven't done with Megaman, I don't trust them with an action/adventure title anymore. Here's hoping they prove me wrong.

Hopefully this game measures up, as the dev is untested. Definitely has potential though. :P
it looks different, but capcom,dont plan out a new franchise until you see how the first does.
I was really looking forward to this game, but after watching the demos and such, I realised the voice acting/scipting was a major turn off.
The "made to have Dlc in the future" way of making a game is literally ruining the world of gaming. I wont buy a new console until it ends -i hope it ends.

what ever happened to just making solid, full gaming experience... and not cutting content for sequels/ dlcs
