Capcom 'favorably considering' Dragon's Dogma sequel

Japanese publisher says one million sales of Dragon's Dogma warrants consideration of "subsequent titles."

It continues to sound as though Capcom will make a sequel to May's action role-playing game Dragon's Dogma. Capcom today published highlights from an investor question and answer session during which the company said the sales success of Dragon's Dogma warrants more games in the series.

"Dragon's Dogma was a bigger-than-expected hit domestically, while overseas, it was slightly below our initial forecasts. However, in both domestic and international markets, unit sales increased with a steady expansion of repeat sales," says Capcom. "Under current market conditions, we consider the sale of one million units for brand new titles to be a relative success. Given this, we are in a position to favorably consider subsequent titles."

As part of a financial report that saw Capcom's profits rise 290 percent, the company said the one million copies Dragon's Dogma has shipped thus far have "set the stage" for the game to become a series. This follows news from June, when Capcom said it plans to develop the original fantasy role-playing game into a major franchise. Additionally, game director Hideaki Itsuno said last month that a full sequel would be developed, provided the fan support is there.

Use Unreal Engine or Skyrim's engine since the game has serious issues with frame rate

Well this is what i would like them to introduce/enhance for the game sequel:

1. A more consistent story from the beginning to the end. I would like the story to be taken more seriously throughout the game and not just something that feels more like a side quest. More intrigue, more drama, something that we can really be into!

2. Viable romance options (à la Baldur's Gate 2). It's a bit too confusing at the moment. You can talk to just anyone and raise their affinity to the max and if i am not mistaken the last one you have spoken to is the one you get, but i don't like how this system works. Establish trigger lines (again, like Baldur's Gate 2... oh how i miss you...) that change dialogue options. Create romance quests, stories exclusive to each and every NPC that you can romance with, only this time a more personal approach (not the escort me to "insert random place" type).

3. A bigger world! Gransys is just too small! Make the cities alive! Gran Soren seems like their inhabitants have fled! More activity during the day, more crime during the night (again, Baldur's Gate 2 anyone?).

4. This one i haven't seen mentioned yet but don't you people find it annoying that each time you want to use a curative you have to press select and use it? This whole manual process constantly puts me off from using a consumable or whatever i could use at a certain time. It's a no go for me. How about pressing R3 to shortcut us for, say, square: health curative, triangle: stamina curative, circle: you name it! Keybinds are needed in such an action based RPG. One reason Fail of Thrones sucks (why, people don't like combat to be stopped even if they could!)

5. Let us distribute our experience points. Give us freedom to make our characters the way we want it.

6. Pawns? Hmph... food for thought. I'll stop right there.

Cheers y' all!

The game is already too easy. At around level 25, you rarely get a challenge anymore, you no longer get scared traveling by night. Make a 'hard' option to choose. Make free fast travel an option, at least to designated spots on the map. More open space. Incorporate online gameplay better, I want to have a human player play with me for a time on a quest we both haven't done, and then leave whenever we want to play our own games. The PAWNS come in and out easy enough, so it should be for human players. Utilize the SAVE and LOAD functions better, that way noobs won't mind so much getting killed all the time because they can re-load easy enough. Honestly I hardly ever got killed when I played this game for the first time, and that's just not on :(. I crave challenging gameplay.

hopefully if and when they make the sequel they should implement what mass effect has you should be able to import your characters from DD the first one and add a better fast travel and like one other person in the comments said add weather effects and moarrrr open world make it bigger then it already is also is weather is implemented then allow the bigger beast (griffons, hydras etc...) to only appear in certain seasons then they would have the perfect game

They are about to permanently break the game in a couple of days by letting players switch to easy mode at any time during the game. You can kiss any sense of danger and suspense that you had goodbye knowing that you can switch to easy mode and 1 hit a monster at will. ....Even if you play on normal your main pawn will return with a ridiculously imbalanced number of rift crystals due to newbs flying through the game on easy mode....If you are sick and tired of companies ruining good games after you have bought them let your feelings be known here http://www.capcom-unity.com/brelston/blog/2012/08/02/easy_mode,_new_demo_coming_for_dragons_dogma

@TruthSerum808 lol easy mode...that game wasnt that hard at all. they should add a hardcore-as-dark--souls mode

It was flawed in both plot and quick traveling. yet the combat, pawns and exploration were awesome. I would love a sequel.

They had better develop the characters more. I loved the DD characters (Aelinore) but I feel that they didn't really put in a lot for the characters

Remember this is coming from a company that went "Okami was a massive success?  Better fire everyone who made it!"

Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

1 million sold of a new IP game and it's a "relative success"?  Capcom, this is why you are a joke of a company now.

skytrot
skytrot

@Thanatos2k Success is relative to the games that the company makes. If RE6 were to sell 1M, it would of course be seen as a failure. DD was a new IP and you hardly see new IPs sell over 1M.

Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@skytrot That's why I said specifically that it was a new IP that sold over a million.

Only companies as terrible as Capcom wouldn't see this as an overwhelming success.

theblackfrog
theblackfrog

@Thanatos2k well i have read that they expected to sell 10 million so 1 million is a relative success...of course 10 million was a "bit" too high lol

If Capcom fixes issues that are in the first game and adds a whole bunch of new stuff to the sequel, then I'm in favor of a sequel. DD is a really fun RPG for sure.

@dawnofhero I can agree with you on that hopefully a better fast travel system & a bigger world then it already is would be awesome

That sounds like great news so hopefully Capcom will follow up with that.  Dragon's Dogma is an awesome game that is highly addictive...so looking forward to see what can be made with the future of the "franchise"!

I just bought the game yesterday. Have yet to play it as I need to finish the last half of Rage, and then the last level of Resistance3. Really sounds like I like FPS when I really don't, maybe that's why I have yet to finish them. Anyway, I know I will like D'sDogma since it is exactly my type of game.

If it's mounts we're after then I vote for griffons. Imagine soaring across the skies of Gransys on griffon-back, dive-bombing giants, goblins and hapless wandering pawns alike. Nneeeowm!

Great game. Had a lot of win with it. This is how you make open world RPG bethesda. Yes, make another 1 capcom and improve it more, fix those minor problems. We win!

theblackfrog
theblackfrog

@Laharl5 they have to learn how to make loot....skyrim was great but the loot is/was the problem. there was no reason to loot dungeons except the dragon cries/shouts.

kuglefang
kuglefang like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Laharl5 pretty sure it was capcom who payed a bit of attention to Bethesda during the development of this game, they did mention that in an article I read a while back but still it wouldn't hurt for Bethesda to learn a bit from this game as well

nechiken
nechiken like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Laharl5 I don't think Bethesda needs to learn how to make an open world RPG...

y3ivan
y3ivan

 @nechiken

nah, Bethesda's TES5 is much more detailed RPG system and had a deeper stats building and upgrade system. If Bethesda managed to merge combat of DD with the deep and detailed world of skyrim = Game of the decade. Obviously they fail at the combat part, everything else its solid.

This however DD is has the same similiarities with A-RPG like Diablo3.

iluvOP
iluvOP

@nechiken Well in TES games they certainly need to learn something. Theres no feeling adventure with big pointy arrows everywhere and theres no sense of intensity in exploring caves and such. In Fallout games it was understandable and worked really well. Especially in NV but there they had some different people on that.

Ayzed
Ayzed like.author.displayName 1 Like

 @nechiken  @Laharl5

agreed, they do need to learn how to be kinder to their ps3 and pc using customers though.

I loved DD but the things that they really need to work on for the next one are VARIETY and MOUNTS (if they don't want to have a rare item-based fast travel system, they need mounts imo).

Exploring the world was fun, but when you are making your 3rd/4th trip back to the starting town, going through the SAME EXACT roads over and over and over, seeing the same exact mobs over and over (Griffon just outside Gran Soren, Cyclops at the waterfall near the encampment) it gets old and repeitive quick.

They need to make monster spawns random, allow the "Big" monsters (Griffons, cyclops, Hydra's, etc) to actually ROAM and not stay in one spot) also how about including a good weather system? Rain (light, medium, heavy) , fog, snow, dust storms, etc could all be in and affect the monsters/your character in various ways.

dawnofhero
dawnofhero

@Stiler I agree with your list. There should be more environment climates like snowy mountains, deserts, rain/thunder, etc. Random monster locations would be terrific as well - it's so annoying to try and run to a certain part of the map and have to fight 5 dozen enemies on the way there, including boss monsters :/ Horses for mounts would be sweet - and Capcom could make mini games to win gold and stuff, like a city jousting tournament, playing chess with a stranger, an archery contest, etc. And more colorful, active cities. Ah, there's so much we could add to the sequel! DD is good, but it can be even better.

kuglefang
kuglefang

@Stiler There is actually a mount in DD, you remember the cow that was carrying the head of the Hydra to Gran Soren? Well if you push the grab button while side by side with the cow then you'll be able to ride it :)

dawnofhero
dawnofhero

@kuglefang I think he's referring to other types of mounts, like horses.

@dawnofhero its better than nothing and I actually discovered that by accident and needless to say it blew my mind

Dragon Dogma is missing few areas like.

Blizzard Snow Level, Posion Swamp Level, Quicksand Desert Level, Volcanoe Hot Level, Highwind Dusty Level, Underwater Water Level, hopefully they add Swimming to find more treasures undersea. :D

 @iluvOP

Dragons Dogma good game, it just lacks alot of potential. and it hardly ever explains alot of things easily missed in the game. even with a game guide its still isn't easily explained.

like.

1. How the hell you tell who's affection you have most.?

2. How the hell can you tell when your Rank Vocation levels up?

3. How can you know about, certain quest that leave little explanition even in book?

Dragons Dogma a good game but it need sme improvments, and these are just the basics.

servb0ts

 @iluvOP

by Rank Vocations I mean, showing how far you have to the next level, like it shows your experience. :P

@servb0ts not really too hot with the swimming levels, most water levels in games suck but if they could pull it off then why the hell not :)

also I agree with you that DD does lack a bit of variety in more areas rather than the locations

I'm all for Co-op, espically with Mics. I hope if it doesn't go co-op as horrific as Dark Souls. That was a Pain in ass to Co-op with my Best Friend, all those intruders every 30 seconds.

I believe the Dark Souls co-op was on purpose. They wanted to make the game difficult hence making it harder to play true co-op with your buddy of choice.

@tightwad34 It was so hardcore that "summoning failed" to my friend who was 5 meters away from me in lan games, but connecting to some random people worked fine. DaS=Dont expect to have any fun with friends.

Dark Souls co-op Sucked Ass, i don't want to experience that ever again on any PS3 co-op game. If dragon's Dogma 2 has co-op it need to bethe Exact opposite of Dark Souls.

A game Id love to see a sequel for. It would only need a few minor improvements. As many have mentioned, online co-op etc would be fun. But a solid single player game is also good enough for me.
