Parent company's financial report reveals Atlus' horror puzzler has moved half a million copies.
The last report out of Atlus regarding Catherine sales pegged the puzzler at 200,000 units sold within a week of its late-July launch. Two months later, that number has more than doubled.
According to an Andriasang translation of Atlus parent company Index Corporation's yearly earnings, Catherine has now surpassed 500,000 in worldwide sales. That number could be considerably goosed next year when the game officially launches in Europe.
A horror-themed puzzle game, Catherine has players navigating tricky relationship waters as Vincent. When the commitment-phobic protagonist's girlfriend Katherine starts talking about taking their relationship to the next level, Vincent finds himself straying. While out drinking with friends, he meets a flirty bombshell named Catherine, whom--after a series of events he can't quite recall--he wakes up next to the following morning.
In addition to helping Vincent make decisions to extricate himself from the situation, players are called on to fight off the physical manifestations of his fears and guilt as he sleeps. The game also includes local competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes, complete with leaderboard support.

@ every1 who is saying the game is pervy Shut up! There's no nudity in the game if u bought it in the states. Catherine is a brilliant game! I dont use the word brilliant often so when i say it i mean it. Idc wut any1 says, Catherine is my GOTY so far! This game is by far the best i've played this year (i said that i've played so dont hate, say im buggin & then start naming games in ur guy's opinion is better than Catherine). I dont think Catherine will get GOTY because of all the hype that Skyrim is getting (& by the looks of it deservedly so). But if Catherine isnt even nominated, then every1 in the gaming business who has a say in wut the finalist should b 4 GOTY didnt do their job & slept on a GREAT game. Congrats Atlus! U definately have a gem on ur hands. Keep up the good work!
to those who think the game is pervy - there is no nudity like western games like god of war and heavy rain for example that they decided to market the game heavily on it is one thing - but dont judge a book by its cover
A lot can be learnt from this piece of art. Because thematic wise it's certainly stepping in new territory for gaming.
@mdchapel9 I say its much better to get an unique game that you will thoroughly enjoy than get drunk and have a stupid hangover and all that crap next morning :P @Son_of_Bmore Who cares, both are FPS games made by two greedy corporations that dont care about gaming at all. This is a real game, made by ppl who actually have a desire to innovate,to be creative with their games, not just rip us off with multiple methods.
im european and bought it at release from canada i hate hard games so i was a lil scared but u can put very easy cheat, and trust me after playing easy u have by then learned enough so normal is a breeze too - it was for me the stuff u unlock are very hard though the game is simply awesome and its great with something fresh - im picky about puzzle games but this one did work for me also - there are 7 endings - do not play the game just once or twice and get the 2 bad ones - this is a game that deserves to have all endings seen since it made me love the game even more!!! the characters are likable and not the typical 17 year old lil blond guy id love to see some of the characters again actually - especially orlando:P the cutscenes are awesome and the toilet scenes hilarious
Awesome! Congrats to Atlus for bringing something unique to the game (as we all know they're good at doing) and 'kudos' gamers that contributed to those kick-ass sales numbers (I hope to be one by the year's end). The deserve every penny of it! There needs to be FAR more true mature titles like this (as too w/ Heavy Rain)....keep 'em coming! A many 'big boy' publisher/devs could stand to take some notes on how you can make success even out of 'niche' titles, if they're given the proper light to shine and have faith in its success (*I'm looking at YOU, Capcom* & shoddy LACK advertising for AAI). With the exception of Sony, every other one act like they scared to take a chance on less 'mainstream' titles....
@Son_of_Bmore MW and BF have two small things called "Hype", which means people will blindly buy like a horde of worshippers. Catherine didn't had that, so it's a great milestone for a game that decided, DAN DAN DAAAAAN, innovate. Y'know? Not just update graphics?
Also, this game was incredibly easy. If you use the Super Easy mode code then you can blaze through each puzzle within seconds or minutes at most.
This is my pick for GOTY. Runner ups would be Deus Ex: Human Revolution, L.A. Noire, Portal 2, Dragon Age II, Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3.
The story and style interest me but I don't like puzzle games all that much and the difficulty looks nerve racking.
Decent numbers for a new IP but still very disappointing since the game was amazing. I got my copy so at least I showed support for something new and I still play the game to this day, it is terrific.
this really is a testament to word-of-mouth about this game! I know it's on my Wish List, but it is still coming in 'new' at over $50...
@majere613 True, but if it's coming over here, I'd rather have the version that'll be over here. Sometimes imports screw things up. For example DLC. I need a US PSN account in order to download DLC for it, and also a US credit card/PSN voucher. As the DLC from the UK PSN does not work on US games (I tried when the first BlazBlue game came out, and had to buy a UK one to get the DLC. Had to start again as the US save didn't work on my new UK game. Also same thing with Rock Band.). Same thing with Dead Space 2, there's even a glitch where you have to get a US game save of Dead Space 1 on some versions of Dead Space 2 in order to get the refurbished plasma cutter. So I'll just have to be patient, no matter how it sucks ¬_¬.
Erm, just a reminder that since Catherine is a Ps3 game, (therefore region free) the US version runs just fine on an EU Ps3. On eBay right now from about £35.
This is one of the games that I am actually pleased about selling well. Atlus put a different perspective on the adventure and platforming genres.
Dear Atlus, thank you for taking the risk of translating this awesome game to english, I hope it sells many more copies unlike some company who has a RPG series which I will not mention here but has been ignoring us by not releasing their games outside of Japan despite a huge popular demand. Or so the tales go. Sincerely: GunBladeHero
I cannot believe we're having to wait until next year for this, it's back to the PS2 horror decade were we had to wait 1-3 years to even get the big titles like the US and Japan had ¬_¬. I hate being a gamer in the UK, we always get screwed (okay, one or two times we get it okay but that's a rarity). Like with games coming late, not getting the limited edition, or them not coming out at all ¬_¬. I swear I'm gonna learn Japanese for all those awesome games I've been missing out on.
was there any need to delay European version ? next time please release the game in time i am dying to play it
I still haven't finished it. XD I refuse to turn down the difficulty even though I haven't played many puzzle games before.
I havent played this yet but I really want to. I have been saving money and trying not to buy too many games at once but I will definatly for sure be buying this (new) before the end of the year. Even though I haven't played this its great to hear a game that tried something new and different has been a success.
@wenisman Atlus didn't publish Dark Souls Namco Bandai did. However, I agree that Atlus is an awesome company and their games are really awesome. Heres looking forward to Persona 5!
Could Catherine surprise everyone and get some Game of the Year prizes?:) Kudos to Atlus, this is a great game.
I love how a game so niche outsold Resistance 3 by more than double. I understand the whole "well, it was on two platforms instead of one" argument, but it really doesn't apply here. The fact Catherine outsold it on one platform is amazing. I love Insomniac, and I own all of their PS3 games, but they definitely cheaped out on the R3 ending. This was karma.
It's to good see Atlus' first internally developed HD game has been a success. But I hope people have been buying it because of how legitimately good it is and not because they see the box and believe it's a porn game.
so glad the game is doing well. Catherine deserves that success. It's the first game I've played that have a really 'universal' feel, its story translates flawlessly across cultures. Here's hoping for more unique gems from Atlus!
helldews indeed but seeing this gives me hope that one day games like this and more Japanese developers will put a end to this fps crazy world
this is why Japanese developers need to stay to their roots. we get grea unique games like this. seeing capcom as an example focus on western styled games just makes me sad.
Even though I haven't played the game yet, from everything that I've read about it, I'm glad to see that it is doing well.I hope this gives more developers and publishers the confidence to create more games of this nature.
