Dead Space 3 gets Kinect voice controls

Visceral Games' upcoming action shooter will feature Kinect functionality for voice commands on Xbox 360.

Dead Space 3 for Xbox 360 will feature Kinect voice controls, publisher Electronic Arts announced today. Players will be able to use simple voice commands like "Find partner," "Fire stasis," "Attack enemy" and others during gameplay in both single- and cooperative multiplayer.

Kinect voice controls are entirely optional in Dead Space 3. No gesture-based Kinect functionality was announced.

Dead Space 3 is due out February 5, 2013 in North America for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, with a release following in Europe on February 8. The game is the first entry in the action-horror series to feature cooperative play. Players will venture to a new planet called Tau Volantis as series hero Isaac Clarke, but will also be joined by newcomer John Carver.

Funny how they won't make this for Wii U, but will add "kinect" voice controls for 360 version.

I knew that the mention of a core gaming franchise and Kinect in the same article would cause some conniptions in the comments.  Once again, GameSpot's audience does not disappoint.

I loved the commands in Mass Effect 3, so this sound quite good.

My first voice command will be: "Disable Kinect Voice Control"

Doesnt really affect me one way or the other.  They've done something similar for a few games with Kinnect.  I dont have one but it doesnt seem to affect my experience whatsoever.

At least they had the decency to make it optional.

Kinect is worthless. Keep it out of my game.

What I don't get is why they make this just for Kinect.

While I don't want it in the game at all, Kinect is nothing special.

They could do this on any system using the mics people already use for gaming. Kinect doesn't have a more sophisticated microphone or any special software to render your voice.

Really makes me wonder how much Microsoft pays them to degrade their games and add in these "features".

Drilbit777
Drilbit777

@Toysoldier34 The kinect features are optional, they aren't forcing you to use them. If you don't like the kinect features then don"t use them.

Toysoldier34
Toysoldier34

@Drilbit777 The gameplay is adjusted to allocate this being a feature.

After playing the past Dead Space games, especially the first there is no way voice controls would be viable. While we don't know exactly how much of an impact it has, the past few years of gaming has proven nothing good comes from this. No game is benefiting from them adding delayed voice controls, especially Dead Space.

How exactly does the command "Attack Enemy" work? I imagine it would only be for directing the single player NPC partner. Hopefully it does not have to do with firing your weapon because, you know, I find that aiming and clicking the button works really well for that hehe. I did however get a hilarious mental image of someone yelling "Attack Enemy" over and over again really fast during combar lol!

if it's not a dancing game the kinect is pretty much useless.  I tried the voice commands when ME3 came out and half the time they didn't register unless I shouted at the stupid thing.

@KillzoneSnake how did i guess the metion of kinect and a bunch of ps 3 trolls are ready to pounce. kinect is a nice extra. when they add voice control it is optional to use it people for get this. the game is going to play the same on 360 the only differance is you can use kinect voice command if you want.

@jtthegame316 The Kinect doesn't have a good library of games. They're like failed experiments but I think the Seasme Street game was one that got good reviews (but I don't trust reviews. Most of the games I see are bad like DBZ and the new Marvel game. The Kinect also watches you too.I don't want a product that has lousy games and performs surveillence on you.And no I'm no ps3 fanboy.I'm a stragiht gamer who sees the Kinect as a gimmick. It has potential but as of now its useless except to give MS an idea of what you're habits are when you play your 360 and who you are and what you like to play.I believe that's invasion of privacy by the way

jtthegame316
jtthegame316

@179107199999  @jtthegame316 Gunstringer is a good game, fruit ninga kinect is good. there are a few kinect games that are fun to play. it is not a replacement for controller games but it is a nice extra. It is only ps 3 fanboys and people that like to jump on hate bandwagons that hate on it. At the end of the day kinect does not stop you playing controller games, When a game has voice commands kinect features you can choose to just play with the controller and not use these features if you wish. Ms have an idea of you habbits just as sony do they only need to see your xbox live or psn account and they have an idea of what you play.

@jark888 Its not horror when you can shoot and have that sense of control.True Survival Horror is knowing when to run and when to fight and being extremely cautious when opening certain doors.Games in this gen don't do that much any more

jark888
jark888

@179107199999  @jark888 I like how you point those things out. Money drive (the direction of game) might be the main reason. So many people are chicken out to play true horror games. For me, I like watching scary movies or play Dead Space alone at night on headphone without light. It's kinda give me immersing experience.

Let's hope Dead Space 3 is more like the original and less like the sequel.  The 2nd one was ok.  The first one was one of the best games of all time! Don't screw it up!

TheologicVs

I wonder why developers keep putting voice controls that only work through the Kinect into their games. We know you could use voice commands from any Xbox 360 headset. This feature is restricted to Kinect for so many games why? Voice commands are definitely cool sometimes but the Kinect voice playback sounds awful. If the voices sound as bad to the game as it does to me when communicating with Kinect users then it'd be better to just use a headset.

RuztheFuz
RuztheFuz

 @TheologicVs

Its because the kinect already has the software or whatever programmed to it so it knows whether your saying "attack enemy" (lol) or some other crap while a headset doesnt, so Visceral would have to program their own voice recognition stuff into the game theirselves

jark888
jark888 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@RuztheFuz  @TheologicVs It had done before in Socom PS2 game. They're sure can find some way to do it if they want to. By the way, why is it exclusive to Kinect while PS3 eye camera has microphone too? I figure the answer would be like Kinect is more superior somehow. If they can make it happen on headset, every platform could benefit that feature.

jark888
jark888 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@TheologicVs Using headset for this feature may be more appropriate since Kinect's mic doesn't always respond to your voice command.
