Is DN Forever running on the doom 3 engine or unreal engine 3? I remember before Gearbox started working on it, 3D Realms said it was running on the doom 3 engine. I hope not because that engine is getting really old.
PAX 2010: Gearbox president Randy Pitchford confirms that his studio has taken over the long, long, long-awaited shooter, which will be playable on the PAX Prime floor.
Yesterday as part of his prolific Twitter stream, 3D Realms president George Broussard posted a cryptic picture of pigs flying. Today, the reason became clear. At PAX Prime in Seattle, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford took the stage to announce that his studio has taken over Duke Nukem Forever, which had been in development at the now-all-but-defunct 3D Realms since 1997.
Speaking to a shocked and enthusiastic crowd, Pitchford said, "We can't let the Duke die, right? The guys at 3D Realms who put their hearts and souls into this, so we wanted to make sure it hits all the platforms. It's coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in 2011."
Pitchford also told the Wall Street Journal that Gearbox took over the game in late 2009, following the quasi-closure of 3D Realms and tit-for-tat lawsuits between 3D Realms and Duken Nukem Forever publisher Take-Two Interactive. (He also told the paper the game was coming out in 2010, but he said 2011 at PAX today.)
"Clearly the game hadn't been finished at 3D Realms but a lot of content had been created," Pitchford told the Journal. "The approach and investment and process at 3D Realms didn’t quite make it and it cracked at the end. With Gearbox Software we brought all those pieces together. It's the game it was meant to be."
Scott Miller, owner and CEO of 3D Realms, also reflected to the Journal why his studio failed to complete the game. "We were probably too much of a perfectionist about the game. When some other game had some great feature come out, we wanted to match it…We'd been distracted on other games like Prey. It was a combination of those things. We were trying to build a game that was too great."
Duke Nukem Forever isn't the first Duke Nukem game that Gearbox has worked on. In June, court filings in the Take-Two Interactive lawsuit against Duke Nukem Forever developer 3D Realms (incorporated as Apogee Software) revealed that another game featuring the first-person shooter icon was in the works at a "well-known game developer" as early as 2007. That mystery developer was, in fact, Gearbox.
The Duke Nukem-Gearbox connections don't stop there. Before forming Gearbox, Pitchford worked at 3D Realms on an expansion for Duke Nukem 3D for the PC. (The game was rereleased in 2008 as an Xbox Live Arcade title.) "People like George Broussard and the 3D Realms team are the reason I got into gaming," said Pitchford during today's speech.
I hope they will enable money throwing cheats and I hope you will be ably to pay some b.. ehm girls to show ti... ehm smiles :D
one the first boot up after the title appears on the screen, Duke should utter "Its about god-damn time" lol
Also, all those people that pre-ordered it YEARS ago, I wonder if their pre-order will still count when it comes out 2011 :D
How much you bet it will get delayed somehow. I will be beyond astonished if it doesn't. Gearbox is pretty awesome though, I guess we'll wait and see haha.
i hope this comes out as I love the nukem games (apart from mahattan) - This has been on and off for years....I suppose we wait and see
@your-exhellency actually the graphics seem to be pretty up to date. It's the concept thats outdated. kicking ass and cussing like a sailor may have done it for me as a kid, but now it's old Unless they do something radically new, it will be a straight run and gun that is overshadowed by the more creative shooters like bioshock, borderlands, or left4dead
For most people it's gonna be too little too late. After so many cancelations and then re-release rumors, I doubt it's gonna get the glory it could have gotten. I myself aren't even too excited. Watch it be mediocre at best too, what with all the censorship going on these days. THEY BETTER NOT CENSOR THE DUKE!
this game is bound to be old-school and dated, and as such, would it not be better to can it, and give the franchise to an up to the minute developer? i'd love to see a duke game with graphics like bioshock, dead space or fallout 3...
So hell must be kinda cold now that Duke Nukem Forever is being released. My Software Dev teacher was on about how hell would freeze over before Duke Nukem came out again. But I suppose this proves her wrong or that hell is almost freezing now.
im happy for the game, but its been so long since it "began", ill only be happy when they release it :I
*bows to the gods* i was young when like duke 2 and duke 3d that soret of stuff came out i played them non stop for years and then got the PS1 games as well, and now if this comes out then wooohooooo! because Duke Nukem is just incredible full stop!
Gee where have I heard that it was shipping before? Wasn't that a few years ago and it was delayed again? Lol.
@TxtBin you've seen games with graphics on par with Avatar? Suuuuure. Does your coloring book and crayons also have "Avatar graphics"?
@Derek494 I agree since Gearbox are involved and 3D Reals have already provided them with a strong base to develop upon but dont get too cocky, movies like Avatar had gone through development hell yet the actual film, although successful, wasn't that great. The story is simplistic and probably the only wow factor is the graphical quality but even then I've seen games which are in par with the Avatar graphics.
its about time! honestly i don't have amazing expectations for the game i dont think it'll cure cancer but, the game will defenatly be good, c'mon theirs no way that this long of development and the game sucks, that will not happen, i honestly have faith in the devlopers from 3d realms and gearbox, don't expect the holy grail of fps shooters but defenatly expect a good game.
When the game was first announced sometime during the late 90s, I was actually so excited about the thoughts of such a game. I gradually got interested in different games (GTA III) and I just forgot that Duke Nukem even existed. I thought it was a dead project anyway when I actually thought about it since 5 years had gone by already and no sign of news. When I heard the game was finally canned, I was frustrated that a decade later and it still never saw the public. I was glad though that I invested minimum time fantasizing about the game cause better stuff came by. However, when I heard it was being revived, I knew it was gonna be a fail but after hearing its Gearbox - I hgave full faith. Borderlands was great, they CAN repeat the magic.
I dunno. Duke sits fondly in my memories as one of the great cheesy gaming icons from the 90's. I just don't see him working in this day and age of dull, serious games and sequels. Yeah that's right! I miss the gaming from the 90's! (holds face in hands and cries)
all that hype, it'll be funny if it came out as a bad game, a hero with thick glasses? how is that cool?
looks cool.. :D wait a second?? hey it's Gearbox?? they make great titles like Brothers In Arms Hell's Highway & Borderlands.. :)
