EA seeking Alpha Centauri trademark
Publisher indicates continued interest in Sid Meier's classic turn-based strategy series with new USPTO filing.
Over the past couple of years, Electronic Arts has teased gamers with trademark application filings for some of its more beloved classic franchises, ranging from Syndicate to Road Rash, Populous, Theme Park, and Wing Commander. Now, one more filing can be added to that list, as this month the publisher asserted its claim on the Alpha Centauri name.
EA's most recent filings with the US Patent and Trademark Office came on August 1. Two applications were submitted, both for the Alpha Centauri name. The first lists "entertainment services, namely, providing an on-line computer game" as its primary use. The other explicitly states that the name will be used for "computer game software."
The mark is presumably in reference to EA's classic turn-based strategy franchise Alpha Centauri, which was developed by Firaxis Games before being purchased by Take-Two Interactive. A collaboration between Sid Meier and Brian Reynolds, Alpha Centauri received critical acclaim upon its release for the PC in January 1999. The franchise has lain dormant since Alpha Centauri's first and only expansion, Alien Crossfire, shipped in October 1999.
EA has thus far made little use of its trademarked classics. The Darkness developer Starbreeze has been attached to EA's Syndicate revival, though that project has yet to be formally announced. Reports emerged earlier this week that EA will be releasing a Theme Park title for iOS later this year.
this is the best news i've heard all day! Excellent!!!
They could just upgrade the graphics and leave everything else the same...I'd buy it.
yes alpha centauri is still one of the best turn based strateger out there. and i played the sister miriam the religious girl, but she was last choice right before the blackhaired agro girl.
This should be fun!
*sigh*... I want SimCity 5 - not the Sims, not Societies, just the original SimCity in an updated version. I played SMAC when it came out...I lost interest because I didn't like the units, and the game took forever for me to play (typically 20+ hours per game). Civ 4 was far better and more balanced.
*cough* Command and Conquer 4 *cough*
People worried about EA ruining the franchise are funny... There IS no franchise. At best EA can barely revive it. What's the worst they can do for a game that currently has no chance in hell at getting a sequel? I'm not a fan of EA, but what is there to lose? You can say "It'll destroy the memory of the game" or some BS like that, but really... It's been over a decade and no indication of a sequel anyways. I say let them do it.
The original was one of my favorite games of all time.
I don't want a dumbed-down sequel. Enough Said.
Please don't buy it EA. I'd rather not see Alpha Centauri destroyed.
The substructure of the universe regresses infinitely towards smaller and smaller components. Behind atoms we find electrons, and behind failed sequels, EA. Each released sequel raises some hopes, but proves to be sh****. -- Academician Prokhor Zakharov, "For I have tasted the Fungus"
All i want is syndicate to return !!! Dont you think we have waited enough EA. SYNDICATE was a total classic with its bladerunner style coats and terminator style shotgun kills. Its clear that cyberpunk themes very popular what with deus ex coming back.& yes im so getting that too. So come on ea light a fire under the ass of whoevers supposed to be remaking it and make it porpely with no added bs or changes. before i mod GTA4 with a syndicate mod as thats what it should be like . also dungeon keeper 3
Ha awesome game! No one ever wanted to play the ginger, religious woman though
EA... EA... EA... Oh right... these are the guys who gave Kane the unworthiest of send-offs.... :-/.. Brilliant, just brilliant... :(
EA seeking total fascism
I would loooveee to see this on the iPad, with the CivRev engine.
@Zenstrive Your right nothing is sacred....they might actually try to totally change the nature of the game like what is happening to X-COM
What was my favourite line again? "It is every citizen's final duty to go back into the tanks".....maybe E.A. will do the same
damn EA,teasers...just like theme park and populous..this will never see the light of day.
I was excited about this... then I read the dread letters "E" and "A".
EA, leave Alpha Centauri alone, we all know that you're gonna ruin the franchise! It's gonna be buggy, half-baked and instable!
Alpha Centauti was and is better than civ games. I really liked creating units and weapons. I can hardly wait to see this Phoenix rise again. I just hope a remake is done with such passion as the original and an eye to detail. I loved the motion pictures for reaching technologies.
Alpha Centauri was a masterpiece. Liked it way more than the Civ games. I'd kill for a Alpha Centauri 2.
I would love to see AC updated. I loved the customizable units and the strategies each leader required. I still have it installed on my laptop for long trips....
I have lost faith in EA. They do things that only hurt the consumer. I steer clear of them.
yea, if this means an upcoming sequel as least as good aq civ5 in its series, i'm ready to sell my soul , i always preferred smac to civ
I am among those who liked Alpha Centauri over the Civilization games. It is still among my all-time turn-based faves. I wouldn't mind continuation of the franchise as long as they maintain the level of quality of the original. With EA that might not be such an easy task after all.
Count me in if Sid Meier is working on this one. Count me out if he is only putting his name on the box.
Always actually preferred this to Civ (if that is possible). Been waiting for an update / remake for FAR too long
cant wait to see how this goes. I remember playing this game for hours!. Go EA dont mess it up
It's obvious they buy the TMs to use them at some point. Does EA have zero creativity? Come up with something new already and leave the classics be or let some indie devs have a try at them...
I'll take a copy.
They can TM it all they want, if they don't have Sid Meier on board they don't have jack ****. Civilization:Call to Power anyone?
Wow I remember road rash awesome game. Skitchin was even better wish they would remake that. Then again I guess roller blading isn't as popular as it used to be but who cares.
After EA has sucessfully ran Dragon Age into the ground, they turn their eye on yet another good franchise to spoil. Run Alpha Centauri - Run like the wind!
With EA in control this could go anywhere.
Great game how EA handles something like this since none of the talent that went into the first one is working on it is anyones guess.
If they don't mess it up...I can't wait to terminate The Believers with some good ole Planet Busters again and watch that oh so satisfying cutscene of the 'Interrogation Room'. :D
Another game that they'll ruin.
they should give the rights back to Firaxis, built on the Civ5 engine the game would be amazing. Plus Firaxis have what it takes, on a side note, I wouldn't mind EA bringing back Dungeon Keeper, Moto Racer, Dune and Stunts *EDIT* Why are people thumbing down my comment? Firaxis would do a better job, they built the first didn't they? Plus I haven't seen any turnbased strategies from EA themselves so theres nothing but Command and Conquer to base my opinions on and they've been going stale for a while now in the real time strategy department.
I'd like to see an updated version of Alpha Centauri.
Alpha Centauri is in my top 10 games. I hope EA does justice to the franchise.
My dad will sure be pissed if his all time best classic gets ruined by EA
Alpha Centaury eh? RTS? Shooter?
Yes Finally Alpha Centauri 2, as long it isnt on Facebook or any other social networking sites.
Now really Alpha Centauri is dead, EA don't know how to make 4x games like civ
Alpha Centauri is one of my top 10 games of all times. It's amazing. Hopefully they can do the original justice.
EA can make a shooter out of Syndicate all too easily - that old game's premise and what its player characters do (mostly shooting things) are very convenient reasons/excuses for such a "revamp" and the "present audience". (That Starbreeze is working on it is all too telling.) But Alpha Centauri? That's just so hard. .
Kind of feels like EA is going back into our childhood and trying to round up all the games we loved and erase them from history in a way.
EA probably plans to bury it and sit on it like they always do. Where's Dungeon Keeper 3 btw? Cancelled for Harry Potter Quidditch and buried because EA considered it too risky.
