Gamers4Croydon announces candidates

By Laura Parker

Student Kat Nicholson to take on Attorney-General Michael Atkinson in the electorate of Croydon in the upcoming South Australian state election.

Following this week's heated debate between newly registered political party Gamers4Croydon and South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson, the former have finally chosen to reveal the identities of the two candidates that will go head-to-head with Atkinson in the seat of Croydon in the March South Australian state election.

The Gamers4Croydon candidate for Croydon is Kat Nicholson, who will be running for the House of Assembly. Nicholson will be in direct competition with Atkinson, who has held the seat of Croydon for the past 20 years. Nicholson will need to secure at least 13,000 votes in Croydon to wrest power away from the Labor Party's Atkinson.

According to a Gamers4Croydon press release, Nicholson has "sustained a lifelong love of both gaming and politics and is a highly intelligent, motivated and educated young woman." Nicholson is currently studying for a master's degree in journalism at the University of South Australia.

"Kat strongly believes that parents--not the government--should have the right to raise their children as they see fit," the official press release said.

The party's second candidate is Chris Prior, who is aiming for a spot in the Legislative Council in the upper house. Prior is president of Gamers4Croydon and is a self-taught software engineer. According to a Gamers4Croydon release, Prior has "volunteered extensively in the community, providing help for youth groups and church organisations."

At last, an intelligent spokesperson for the Gaming Community (I hope). I look forward to a debate between these two, then we'll see just how ignorant Atkinson is, and his supporters.

@stray2615 Awesome post. This is exactly what campaigning is all about. Keep in mind, the more we push for R18 the better no matter what the outcome in the election. The public consultation can still be Atkinson's final nightmare waiting around the corner even if Kat doesn't succeed in ripping his seat out from under him.

Regardless of whether or not G4C wins a seat, their involvement brings only good. 1st of all, remember how party preferences work. Any votes for G4C, if they don't get the seat, will then be passed to 2nd preference that they set, then 3rd etc. And I can put money on it Labour is last on their list. Secondly, they are raising awareness. There may still be voters in Croydon that are unaware of the issue at all, and G4C's campaigning will bring light to the subject. This may not be the be all and end all issue that it is to many of us for other voters, but for some fence sitters it may tip the scales, either to G4C or at least to Liberal, and others may see that it is taking away the human right of choice. It will also make the "save the children" mindset voters who may be against R18 aware that it is actually GOOD for children to have a R18 rating. And to top all that off, it has already shaken Mr Atkinson up. The comments he is making against gamers in general, ironically suggesting that G4C would resort illegal means and "dirty tactics"when he himself drew 1st blood in that smear comment, only draws attention to his character. Resorting to that kind of behaviour doesn't make him look mature in anyone's eyes, and shaking him up like this is great for parties coming up against him. Best of luck to G4C, I do hope you win a seat, but even if you don't, thank you for the other things you are doing which many don't consider.

I'm convinced that Michael Atkinson is corrupt. Voting him out is not just for getting an R rating for games (although I agree we need one) but getting an Attorney General who is actually clean and does his/her job. I refer you to this site. http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,26435966-5006301,00.html Unfortunately getting rid of this criminal is going to be harder than we all think. The Labor party want him in because he is their dog. They don't want an independant body for corruption because ALOT of them would be looked into by this body. Voting for either Gamer's for Croydon, or worst case scenario the Liberal Party seems a safer bet. For me this started with trying to get an R rating for games, the more I dig and research this, the more I see this man as a political criminal who should have charges against him brought to light. Why do you think he's so into classification and making it harder for R rated movies to get into the home? He's trying to distract us from all these allegations against him. The Ralph Clarke incident, the Stashed Cash affair, hell I'm almost convinced the Labor Party knows of all this but sweeps it under the rug... and I'm a Labor voter and I'm saying this. I'm disgusted to have this man in my state as the AG and as far as I'm concerned, he's dirty, his workers are dirty, he needs to be either voted out, fired, arrested, or quit. R rating for games, yes. A corrupt law maker, I won't stand for that.

Realistically, Kat doesn't really have a chance. Everyone says she only needs 13000 votes, but that's 13000 votes in an electorate of just over 20000. I wish her all the luck in the world though. If I was in Croyden, I'd vote for her. On the other hand, Chris Prior has a chance at an upper house seat. Anyone can vote for him, and though I believe he needs around 100000 votes (1/12 of SA's population), it is possible if all South Aussie gamers (among others) get behind him. I certainly will.

13000 votes is not that many to get Atkinson away guys. I am confident that South Australia has more than 13000 gamers. GO G4C!!

@Zapcrt, Do you honestly think the average person in croydon will care much beyond the name of the of the party and the first impression of the candidate? I have no idea Who is running my community at the moment. These people have voted for Atkinson for the last 20 years which suggests he has been doing something right (or atleast nothing too wrong). They then see some Party calling themsleves "Gamers4Croydon" Put forward a candidate that sounds like she is a teenager who has no experience in politics and you think thet will take the risk and vote for her?

@mattisgod01 Try reading about the party before assuming their name covers their only objective. As they have stated before, the issue with game classification was their initial motivator but they have plenty of other goals to help improve Croydon as a community. Good luck guys, and thanks on behalf of not only Aussie gamers, but all Australians who believe in freedom of choice.

Chris Prior aiming for Legislative Council in the upper house is a good candidate. Kat Nicholson would be a good choice and a good model against Michael Atkinson. Michael should be careful not too insult a woman, call her a criminal and use dirty tricks on her.

How old is she? She sounds too young for the people of Croydon to consider her a serious candidate. There is much more important issues that concern the people of Croydon then video games. Sounds like Fail to me.
