Upcoming MMO shooter based on anime franchise to be developed by Dungeon Fighter Online team.
Nexon announced the launch schedule for the upcoming MMO shooter Ghost in The Shell online for Japan.
According to a Nexon press event held in Japan, the PC game will be out within the first half of 2014. The MMO shooter will allow players a choice between two factions: the cyber terrorists or Section 9, and character customization that determines how mechanized an avatar can be.
Players can also hack terminals and objects to change up the battlefield and even help teammates during PvE and PvP matches. Narrative-wise, the game will use elements from the anime Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG, and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society.
The game is developed by Neople, the same team behind online MMO Dungeon Fighter Online. There are currently no details on whether the game will be localized or published outside of Japan.
I'm pretty sure this will make it's way over to the west in a few years.. There is a huge potential market for this game. I just hope that they do the series some justice and not leave it a shallow, generic shell.
Hmmm, a cyberpunk mmo? Interesting concept but I'm not going to hold my breath. Loved both gigs of the series, and still waiting on the 3rd gig but if this ends up actually turning out to be a mmo I will most likely pass.
@Elrax I don't think the term MMO is accurate, It's probably just gonna be a Free To Play online FPS. Nowhere in Nexon's press-release does it say 'MMO', I have no idea why Gamespot put that in there. Think along the lines of Combat Arms or Blacklight: Retribution, or Dust 514 at most.
GITS was awesome, its weird seeing an announcement for a new game all these years later, shame its an mmo.
i loved GITS because of all the thinking it made me do, with the deep story and all...but i feel that an FPS is the LAST thing that'll make you think about anything. i haven't tried the games for ps2, though, so i can't exactly say.it does look a lot like they just picked GITS because of how easily they could make it into an interesting video game concept
@kakashi552 I am gonna go completely off-topic here.. but if u liked GITS (my fav too) then you should watch dennou coil and serial experiments lain
Gamespot kinda dropped the ball on this one, quite a bit of info that wasn't covered. http://press.nexon.net/press-release/ghost/nexon-announces-ghost-shell-stand-alone-complex
I love GITS. However, I am leery of any MMO. So, part of me is like, yay, a GITS game, I hole they localize it for US. And another part is like, Darn it, why'd it have to be a MMO!
@Takeno456 It'll probably be a digital title like every other Nexon game, so you'll probably still be able to get it, maybe not understand it though.
I'm not sure if 'MMO' is the right description, I'm guessing it's going to be a Free to play shooter. As for whether it's going to be any good or not, I have no idea. It'll probably be decent, but nothing spectacular. I'm personally looking forward to it.
problem is not that it'll be average, heck i love GITS and will buy any game for it. problem is firstly it'll be a free to play like you said and secondly its nexon. nexon is know for BS pay to win schemes in their games.
EG: you probably start of as a grunt recruit cyborg section 9 agent, but by paying 75 bucks you can play as batou who has better health regen, attacking and defensive abilities.
As a fan of the anime/manga series i'm skeptical about turning Ghost in the shell into an MMO. And also the only game from Nexon i currently play now and then is Dungeon Fighter online..
personally i wouldn't mind if there was a ghost in the shell game made for current gen consoles (if i remember right there was one on the ps1 i think). and only if the game was an action game and had players perform hacking skills to solve crimes and whatnot. but that's just my opinion.
@Ranma_X_basic I would rather not have one of my favorite anime franchises raped by becoming some god awful MMO (the worst kind of game there is).
I don't trust Nexon with shooters... Vindictus was really the only game of theirs I liked, but they took so long to keep pushing out content so I stopped playing early on..
@XZeroKPS Combat Arms is actually decent, if it wasn't for the pay to win aspects.
@LesserAngel I feel like that's a pretty large "if" then there's also the large number of cheaters that are running around.
I'd rather play a CS, TF2, or CoD (I used to play AVA -- that was really good when it came out).
One of the best SciFi anime gonna be ruined now thanks to this mmo. Worse its made by Nixon, the makes of infamous pay to win shooter combat arms.
I'm both interested and not interested in regards to this.
Interested because it's Ghost in the Shell, but not interested because it's an MMO. This is gonna be fun......
And by MMO shooter they mean a persistent character with a server-wide chat room and 16-player game rooms... right?
@Imperiusmax That's what I was thinking. I was hoping to see a single-player game, set in this great universe... But no...
Well, maybe in the future. Oh, and a Cowboy Bebop themed, mature game could be nice too...
@Imperiusmax Because, money.
@shadowboy88 Get bent, its a Japanese series and the original artwork was amazing as was the art in the Tv series.
ahh, GITS...the sci fi that inspired( read was ripped off by) countless other recent sci fi brands. Never really got the cedit it deserved or a proper game to honor it. Probably wont in 2014 either...
And I'm still hoping for a GITSSAC 3rd gig.
DX: HR is a cyberpunk shooter; good game. I don't know any cyberpunk MMO, but the sci-fi setting has been fair to MMOs since Anarchy Online. The game isn't out yet, so I don't want to be unduly negative. But here is my concern:
Major Kusanagi is cool in a way that Adam Jensen is cool. Who wouldn't want to be one of thousands of adventurers in AO, or a trader in EVE, or a Jedi or Sith or BH? On the other hand, has Section 9 been expanded into a division sized (maybe army sized since I wish only the best for the game) military organization? Or do a great many number of fans actually care about the cyber terrorists from the anime? If not, then I guess Nexon better use world reknowned MMO devs to make a game that makes players care.
I lied. I don't wish the game well. I don't really care for the game. Here is my problem. Reputation still matters in this world. Anyone can make an original game. Whether it's good or bad, I say kudos for trying! A bad MMO of a beloved brand will sour my expectations for future attempts, but I like many gamers am generally forgiving especially where a different dev is concerned. Investors are not. They don't become fans of GIS and think another dev will be a different story because the brand is still good. If this GIS MMO flops, there won't be another, even if someone else comes up with a genuinely good idea.
