Sony introducing new persistent feature to series with upcoming prequel; Team Execution game type detailed.
The God of War is making the jump to multiplayer. When the series prequel God of War: Ascension arrives on the PlayStation 3 next year, it will do so with a new multiplayer mode, Sony has confirmed.
While the publisher has not revealed the extent of the mode yet, it has detailed one game type. The Team Execution mode will feature two groups of four players battling for control of a specific part of the map. In one version of the game, the teams fight to activate a cog chained to a giant imprisoned Cyclops, with the winning team earning the right to kill the helpless monster.
The game's multiplayer mode will feature some persistent features as players develop their Troy or Spartan soldiers over time. Performance on the battlefield can yield blessings from the gods in the form of new perks, weapons, and abilities. There will also be a number of different combat roles for players depending on the god they associate themselves with, be it Hades, Poseidon, Zeus, or Ares.
Speculation about a multiplayer mode for God of War picked up last year when job listings at Sony Santa Monica called for people to join the God of War development team to create multiplayer services for the franchise. However, when Ascension was first announced earlier this month, Sony's official product page for the game specified that it was a single-player adventure with no online mode.

I'm guessing I'm the only person that's NOT excited for the new GOW. The series is good, but I think it's time to put Kratos to rest before his image gets tainted like the Duke.
The only reason why they are adding MP is so they can put a online pass code on the game. If it was just single player alot of people would just wait for a cheap used copy.
The old comments are just gone...wow.
As far as this MP 4 vs 4, it looks like it could fun. The priority is of course delivering a great GOW SP game, which Sony Santa Monica has already proven they can do with their AAA metacritically rated GOW 1, GOW 2, and GOW3.
@SolidTy some comments are still migrating from the old system. We have 16 years of stuff and its an enormous project. Everything should be back to normal very soon
not sure that this was really needed but i guess as long as the SP is good i can do what i do with the uncharted games and just not care about MP
The only way multiplayer could be good in GoW is if they have Aphrodite working the pole naked in the middle of every multiplayer map. All kidding aside multiplayer just doesn't fit. At least with bioshock it kind of made since because there was a civil war that destroyed rapture before the first game.
@Henninger: Since when has that stopped companies shoe-horning multiplayer into games where it just isn't needed? Bioshock... Mass Effect and such like.
God of War is not a multiplayer type of game. I feel this is a bad idea. But im getting it for the story & not the multiplayer.
GoW sounds like a good idea for multiplayer. Its still hard to believe an adventure game like GoW could be made into a multiplayer game. Well competition is tough these days when it comes to multiplayer, Good Luck to team Kratos.
@shadowhunter0 Until I see what they are really doing, I'm not going to pass judgement on what the multiplayer will be like. It's hard to be excited for multiplayer components in single-player focused games; especially when there is an iconic character as the lead. History of games proves this to be a problem. That's not to say that the developer isn't working hard at it. I'm sure they are. It's also easy for us gamer's to assume that the money and time would be better spent on the core of the single-player game instead. Only time will tell if the game can beat expectations and pull off a decent multiplayer component.
@PixelAddict My guess is that they think tacking on multiplayer will help the game sell a lot more copies like big name FPS.
@TimboII I was kind of thinking the same thing. Bioshock didn't need it. Interesting idea, but my buds and I tried it one time. Same for Assassin's Creed. Why are relatively great single-player experiences being tarnished with a multiplayer mode? As someone else said, playing as Kratos is all about being the toughest character ever to be... and now there will be several other toughest characters all trying to kill me. Same could be said for Assassin's Creed and Bioshock. People are quick to say "if it doesn't take away from the single player experience, I'm fine with it", but... how can it NOT? These programmers have limited time. Balancing for multiplayer is no short and simple task.
Great. Another gaming series that gets a tacked on multiplayer component that doesn't need it....(ahem, Bioshock)
@whiteagle18 I think I know why you say it should be Sparta .vs. Athens. Is it because that would basically be Ares .vs. Athena? The thing is Athens' military was nothing compared to Sparta's. Troy would give Sparta more of a challenge. Besides, I wouldn't say Troy was better known than Athens. Athens still exists as a major city after all.
I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with MP, more incentive to buy a game with a decent mp component.
Aaaaaaaannnnnnddddd, Sony decides to flush GOW down the toilet. (maybe Kratos can then fight the Greek god of detritus) :)
OH THAT POOR CYCLOPS! It.... he didn't even do anything, and they brutally kill him! :( Talk about a snuff film.
@ahpuck Well, I would suggest just letting the series fade away with dignity after running its course, but nope, there's still money to milk from this cow.
@yixingtpot Blaming xbox or Microsoft for GOW's multiplayer? That is hillarious to say the least! I wish there was a cure for fanboyism. Wait, I think there is! Play several different gaming devices, multiple hours a day, then watch as the fanboy-itist goes away!
The only online feature I would like would be a co-op feature. Looks like they ruled that out in the article though.
I'd rather they didn't even incorporate multiplayer in this series, instead I'd rather they use that dev time to refine the game, or create extra levels. I'm not hating on it , and I'll still get it, but I don't really think about multiplayer when I pick up a GOW game. I am stoked to know that there is another GOW game on the horizon though!!
I still have GOW 1-3 new in shrink wrap, on my backlog, when i'm in the mood 4 gaming I may play these before 4 comes out :P
The concept for MP seems a little interesting. I hope the campaign is top notch and the MP is developed creatively in order for it to be fun.
@ EllieStranger Except for the fact that all of those games included guns as the primary weapon and you so politly calling everone dumb who does not like the idea I can see your point. I love alll of those game but I did not play the MP for them except for a few matches of Uncharted. I like my single player games. I am only concerned that the MP will take up single player resorces and I doubt they will have an arena mode now due to the MP which I prefer. Just my opinion.
Well, they needed to do something drastic. Another round of single player GoW sounds boring to me. I mean, what else can they do? they have done it all, and they have done it all the right way.
stop f******* complaining about it, if u don't like the multi, DON'T f***** PLAY IT!!! just play the single, it's as simple as that...
God of War is a franchisee that has bettered itself with every game, in every aspect...... Just leave it to Santa Monica studios.... They know what they're doing....
