New trailer for ArenaNet's long-awaited pay-once MMORPG reveals late-August release date for PC game.
Developer ArenaNet announced today that the long-awaited massively multiplayer online role-playing game Guild Wars 2 will arrive on August 28. The news comes by way of a new trailer for the game, which is embedded below.
In a statement, parent company NCsoft explained that ArenaNet will spend the months leading up to launch focusing on polishing Guild Wars 2 to "ensure the highest quality experience on launch day."
A Guild Wars 2 beta began in March, and previously, the game was expected to ship sometime during 2012. The team at ArenaNet has a small group working on a console version of the game, but no announcements have been made concerning Guild Wars 2 arriving outside of the PC.
Guild Wars 2 puts players into a persistent fantasy world that is driven by a range of dynamic events. When Guild Wars 2 is launched later this year, it will cost a fee up front but will not require a monthly paid subscription to continue playing.

@fredwv Well, it is supposed WoW killer only for idiots who compare those two games and even have an idea of "killing" WoW. If they said :" Killing MMO genre gameplay that stalled for last 12 years" then ok... But, this way, they are only trolls, and haters.
They've got me with SWTOR, then I kinda liked Tera for 2 weeks, then I bought something ressembling a Diablo game. GW2 really has to be awesome for me to spend some more on games right now. The only real blast I had with a game lately is Max Payne, but hey, it was a R* game, the single company I would trust blindly nowadays.
The game will be a huge fail because of the Dynamic Event system. I'm sure people will enjoy the single player personal story though.
@tommynj Have you even played it, the Dynamic Event system is amazing its chaotic and exhilarating, its different and thats what truly matters!
I wish I had gotten to play the beta. I am very excited for the Dynamic events. They were pretty fun in Rift. I was also a big fan of Guild Wars 1. I am excited!! :)
Ah yes Dynamic Events, kill x amount of enemies until you get to the end boss. Not a lot different I'm afraid.
NCSoft Support sucks. I wouldn't recommended online games with bad support system, especially for online rpgs. My guildwars account never got hacked, but I know that, when your account gets hacked, they can reset your account and characters but the items. So you would have to farm or buy all your items again. (This system won't change for gw2 neither)
Back to ArenaNet. Anet nerfed nearly everything of Guild Wars 1, more than 3 million players quit the game because of that and Anet don't want to realise that and they continues nerfing the game. I don't think that Anet will do well with Guild Wars 2. After the first launch, they will to do the same with gw2, you'll see and you'll regret when you go to buy this game anyway.
I think, it's more worse that to start a new online rpg from the beginning on once again, because of a complete new game release. That doesn't justify all the time I spent for the first release nor the imports from gw1 (btw. the imports sucks mostly, I've never seen that bad import stuff...). Maybe after gw2 they'll release a new gw3 again and than you'll start once again from the beginning on. I am pretty sure about that, because they don't earn permanently from gw2, since this is an online game only without any other costs that players must pay.
I liked GW1, really! It was a very good game and I was an expert on it, but here it ends for me because of gw2.
@TransvormerSCol Get an education, your either 12 years old or extremely illiterate...."It's more worse??" , "Don't want", "Never got", "They dont earn Permanently"...If you don't learn to write properly, or take the time to correct yourself, noone will value your opinion....just sayin...
O shit im correcting peoples writing, is that totally douchebag of me, or am i doing the public a favor? Like if you agree with me...
Sorry, didn't read it all, lol I will agree though their support is freaking terrible.
@TransvormerSCol I'm sorry but have you actually even played GW2? Yes, of course this game is going to be absolutely abysmal.. Not
@TransvormerSCol Well, if you really are expert of GW1, you should not lie and bash it, since they have awesome support and actually help players. So, that is first lie. Second, people did not massively left because of nerf, another lie. Third, GW2 is in no way similar to GW1, because IT IS NOT THE SAME GAME AND SAME ENGINE. Simple as that. If they fail, they will not fail for same reason that GW1 "failed", which is also not true, over 7 million copies and 100's of thousands players still playing.
So, before you spit another lie just to bash the game, think again...
@TransvormerSCol All sucks? 1 advice for you, leave the game and don't follow its updates. :)
It's like waiting two months like waiting for Diablo 3 all over again xD I'm happy we have a release date, the Beta made a very good impression!
@Damnation_6Because Diablo 3 was soooooooooooo fun and totally worth the wait...
dont even mention d3, its an abomination, shallow as fu@#. to those who usually just buy the game cuz it "sounds' good, dont ever do it again, wait for a week or so till the reviews come out.
Console version? haha, whoever got that info is really stupid.
But hey, I can't wait to aug 25th (3 day early start)
I was honestly a little worried I was growing tired with gaming, then I played GW2 for five consecutive hours. Now all I want is more, MORE!
WHY GOD WHY SCHOOL WILL STARTING IN 3 DAYS AFTER THE RELEASE *DARTH VADER* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
That's an easy one.
This release date isn't being reported by some anonymous person on some random website/forum. Therefor it's not speculation or rumor and instead is a factual release date.
Gamespot doesn't know what to do with articles containing facts. If this release date had been 'leaked by someone who knows someone' then you'd see it at the top of the page.
@Baelath cuz gamespot dont give a rat's ass about gw2, too busy focusing on the Tortanic
Late enough that I can have my fun with Secret World, early enough that I'll be looking for a break when XCOM and Dishonered come out. I like!
I've played in two of the betas now. It's awesome, but it's definitely not the perfect MMO like people would lead you to believe. Still, it's probably the best MMO yet.
@Darth_Tyrranus there is one difference that sets it appart from other mmo-s - there is no subscription.... and that my friend makes it perfect.... ppl foprget about that fact a lot
@boleks Yeah... Everytime I look at an upcoming MMO I realize there's a sub and I'm like ewwwww no ty
@Darth_Tyrranus Yea I do get the same feeling that I want this game to be great but i dont think its gonna be quite as good as what people hype it up to be.
@IanNottinghamX some ppl wont like it (like the ppl whove been playing tanks / healers on wow with that big ego of "do what i say or i dont do my job") , and then prob some ppl might not find that having a good kite mechanic will help you win in most fights in the game. its still very promising imo after i played it.
@Enundr Yeah... nothing personal, but where's the link between CoD players and healers/tanks in mmos? Those seem like 2 radically different groups of people. lawl
@IanNottinghamX Meh.....there will always be bloated hype for all big games. Just how the entertainment industry works. Just need to stay embedded in reality with your expectations and you will enjoy the games.
On a side note:
I really don't mind when fans expect way more than the dev's can pull off. Some developers actually try to hit those high expectations and it can only make for a better games for us in the long run. The only way things get better is if the bar is set high.
The bar obviously isn't high for that... *cough* ... C o D game :P and it shows release after release. Always the same game different time.
@phatsanta I didnt say it was a horrible game. It serves its purpose. It just always feels like more of the same in every release. Not much innovation or change. Some people like that......To each his own I say
Never tried any Beta, but I like what I see on various videos. There is so much hype on the game, I really have to try it when it finally launches August 28! Played WoW for 6 years and SWTOR since launch... will Guild Wars 2 become my main MMO?? Remains to be seen...
While it's not the most epic MMO of all time! I would approach it with a level-head and enjoy it from how it's presented to you.
Although I was able to play a couple hours of beta, I am avoiding future gameplay videos, etc until release because I don't want to burn myself out on the game before it's released. :)
@Landsharkk Yeah, we don't need any more info on the game since ourselves and thousands of other players around the world have decided to buy the game by now! The worst thing that can happen is the sense of dissapointment for antecipating our money for pre-order before any reviews of the game after launch. But my gut tells me that the investment will be worth every penny :)
@Landsharkk after playing the betas done so far , the minute i try logging onto any other mmo , i feel like throwing my computer out the window XD . sure some ppl might not like some of the concepts / gameplay of GW2 , i know i sure as heck love everything ive seen / experienced so far.
Participated in BWE1, Stress Test 1, BWE 2 and Stress Test 2. There is only one wrod for this game: AWESOME
