Square Enix launches teaser trailer for next installment in stealth action series; Io Interactive developing.
In late April, Square Enix filed a trademark application for the term "Hitman Absolution," reigniting rumors of a new entry in the long-dormant stealth action series. Those rumors were initially confirmed by a teaser video and brief description that appeared on YouTube this morning.
Shortly after launching the trailer, developer Io Interactive and Square Enix Europe officially announced that Hitman Absolution is indeed in development for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. The announcement did not offer a release window for the title but did say it had been built from the ground up using Io's proprietary Glacier 2 engine. The game will be shown off behind closed doors at next month's Electronic Entertainment Expo.
The trailer, which also surfaced on the official Hitman.com website, shows series protagonist Agent 47 screwing a silencer onto the end of a pistol. The scene then fades into a shot of one of his trademark Silverballer .45 pistols with a rattlesnake curled around it. The shot then fades to a UPC barcode with the numbers "110706" and "47" highlighted in red. The former is likely a reference to June 7, 2011--the first day of E3.
Both the YouTube page and the official announcement offered a brief synopsis of Hitman Absolution's plot: "Hitman Absolution follows Agent 47, a cold blooded assassin, who takes on his most dangerous contract to date. Betrayed by those he trusted and hunted by the police, he finds himself at the centre of a dark conspiracy and must embark on a personal journey through a corrupt and twisted world, in his search for the truth."
Hitman Absolution will be the first entry in the series since 2006's Hitman: Blood Money, which saw 47 bring silent death to locales ranging from mid-Mardi Gras New Orleans to the White House. The series follows the murderous exploits of Agent 47, a bald killer genetically engineered to be the perfect assassin. Hitman: Codename 47 (2000) told the tale of how the protagonist found work with the International Contract Agency (ICA) whacking high-profile criminals. In Hitman 2: Silent Assassin (2002), 47 is pulled out of retirement after his priest friend is kidnapped by the Sicilian Mafia. In Hitman: Contracts (2004), he revisits many missions from the original game, albeit in reverse.
i cant wait for this! its been wayyyyy too long.. 47 better have not gotten rusty since his last contract lol i have a good feeling about this game.. its going to be amazing. the first hitman was, and still is the best. regardless of graphics, etc.. you could do some funny and crazy stuff on that one. (like making the sawed off shotgun have 15 rounds in it lol) but i can see that absolution (trademark square enix, don't want to get sued now) is going to be killer. can't wait
Awesome, hopefully this one will be less linear. Possibly drive cars and have a better use for the money you get from jobs.
@mikees1 i cant remmember exactly but after the mission where he was wearing a white suit after it ended diana appered in a cinmatec where she got a call and said "your majesty" or your honor cant recall the word when i said that i didnt mean to offend any one i just ment i really didnt under stand that senmatic or will the next game explain it thats all. sorry for the bad spelling i just have to type fast to not forget what i want to say lol.
@sensesfail99 & @gamingfrendly, well in that case my apologies. I have played Hitman Blood money and absolutly loved it (cant wait for the new one and am actually thinking of buying Blood Money again), the confusion arrises because apart from 47 i remember very little of the other characters (it was nearly 4 years ago i played the game) involved. It did not help though when he mentioned England and the Queen, thats what made me come up with Princess Diana as it would any body else if those three words were in the same sentance.
@mikees1 i believe gaming friendlyu was tlaking about the diana in the game hitman not princess diana. i see why you thought that tho, coz gaming friendly is a moron. seriously ive looked at a bunch of different comments for different games today and yours have all been negative or just plain retarded.
You mentioned a person close to the British heart (well in fact close to many hearts world wide) as nothing more than a computer game plot! A person who died a tragic death who you seem fit to make fun of! Thats why i said what i did and you know it, so why with the "um what?" You know perfectly what you said!!
Good news (if the game stays true to the previous Hitman games). Hopefully we won't see another franchise ruined by placing too much emphasys on action instead of stealth/disguising (like it happened to Splinter Cell). Still, I can't help but wonder why Eidos Montreal is taking so long in releasing details about Thief 4; Hitman is great and I am excited for this new installment, but a new Thief game will make even happier.
this will be a day of release purchase for me! I've only played one of the games, but it was enough to know i loved the game, bring it on!
Ahhh, the Hitman series... the beloved, inescapably flawed masterpiece that's so frustrating to play at times, but so deep and addictive... even poetic. It's about time.
With how long its been since the last 1, 5 years, and Battlefield 3 had the same type of wait since Battlefield 2, bc they were always working on B3 even though they brought out those halfass Bad Company games, with B3 looking absolutely amazing and could kill COD after the years of bad games my hope is that Hitman Absolution will be just as epic as B3 with all the years of development, bc they've had things leaked each year about someone working on it!
i like hitman game i've played it long time ago ,but no Eidos in the other hand Square Enix is awesome so it will be great game after all.
Awesome, so glad to hear he's comin back. I cannot wait, love the series. Hide yo kids, hide yo wife 47 gonna be doin some murderin tonight!! I do hope they have as high quality of a soundtrack as bloodmoney, twas beautiful.
makes me laugh how if a game has an online option it is classed as call of duty, though i agree no multiplayer.
@El_Isbirro and @tizmond - multiple thumbs up. Agreed. No MP garbage please, just a pure, epic single player experience.
Blood Money have one of best epic ending, i replay that end mission so many times. Can't wait for this one!
why no multiplayer/co-op? it doesn't need to be like call of duty, maybe more like assassins creed, but definitely single player focused.
YESSSS!!! HITMAN!!! please no multiplayer crap, just make it a HITMAN game! put that chic avant-garde euro style espionage feel to the game and we all be happy!!! specially me!!!
Good to see Hitman making a return. No online MP or co-op please. I want to play a Hitman game, not Call Of Duty.
I literally got goosebumps after watching that. It just cant be explained, the teaser simply has to be seen. And I sure as well welcome Hitman's return - in fact with Max Payne and Hitman, my old heroes returning, couldn't have been a happier time to rejoice. As for multiplayer, the possibilities are simply endless. I mean imagine a mission wherein you have to assassinate someone but can't do it all alone. So, you form a team - kinda like a co-op mode wherein every team member is a 47 clone who assumes a different disguise and they have to co-ordinate with each other to get the job done. The ultimate movie like experience !!!
i wounder if diana will be the one thats contact mr 47 last time she semeed to be in england or some where and i think she got a call from some one emportant the queen or some king mybe.
i hope they dont pull off a Splinter Cell Conviction on this one ... i just want stealth and HUGE maps ...
Actually - scrap that last thought, E3 is June 7th, that's what it must be for. The 06 and 07 are often the other way round for the US, so 110706 must mean 7th June. ;)
