ITV Player coming to PS3

British terrestrial broadcaster outlines plans to bring free, ad-funded catch-up service to PS3.

At Sony's GamesCom press briefing, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe chief executive Andrew House announced six new Catch Up TV channels for the PlayStation 3, including ITV in the UK. Today, ITV has detailed its deal to make the ITV Player service available on Sony's console by the end of this year.

The deal is the first of its kind with a commercial broadcaster in the UK, says ITV (the BBC's iPlayer service is already available on the PS3 and Nintendo's Wii), and will add the channel's catch-up service to Internet-connected PS3s. The service allows viewers to watch ITV shows up to 30 days after they have been broadcast.

The ITV Player will be free but funded by advertising, with "pre-, mid-, and post-roll video ads being sold and served by ITV," meaning ads may play before, after, and during shows. After the ITV Player launches for the PS3, owners of the console will be prompted with a software update, which will add an ITV Player icon to the TV section of the main menu, where the iPlayer service currently resides.

The Sony deal is part of ITV's broader plans for "multi-platform distribution," including "games consoles, TV- and mobile-based devices." The ITV Player, based at ITV.com, was first launched in 2007 and gives access to programmes on ITV1, as well as on digital channels ITV2, 3, 4, and CITV. At the time of writing, the ITV Player's most popular shows include Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Dinner Date, and The Jeremy Kyle Show.

4od is looking so old-fashioned compared to BBC iPlayer or ITV Player. I only tolerate it because it's the only place you can watch The Daily Show in the UK.

Nice to know it's finally coming to the PS3. Now all we're missing is 40D and 5 and hopefully we'll get them in the near future.

I first thought this was a good thing, but then I remembered that ITV is devoid of any kind of decent programming. Paris Hiltons BFF? Give me a break.

Oh joy now I can watch Jeremy Kyle in HD, now I can see the spit firing out his mouth as he screams the scum into the ground as their HD puss filled faces look up gormlessly in desperation at a highly unsympathetic audience.

4oD please. ITV's programmes suck for the most part (Celebrity Juice excluded, love that show)....

I have like 100+ channels because the box came with my internet, I watched the World cup in HD but rarely anything else - British TV has the odd smart brilliant program but for the most part it is terrible.Too many channels for a small country! Mass produced nonsense clogs 99% of it. I dare anyone to try and watch day time TV...

@bobasweat. iplayer does have a HD option for some shows, the vast majority who watch iplayer or itvplayer may not have HD yet, lets cut them some slack and given the rubbish internet speeds in the UK it's understandable.

4oD is supposedly not far behind. They are trying to finish a deal currently I've heard.

Does anyone even watch ITV anymore? It's become Chav TV... gameshows for half-witted wannabe that weigh 20 stone plus, and Jeremy Kyle for the even more "intellectually challenged" to watch while they wait for their benefits to drop through the letterbox.
