Jimi Hendrix headlining new Rock Band this year?
MTV Games refutes stand-alone game devoted to famed guitarist's music is en route, but discussions to bring more of his catalog to platform underway.
Source: Comments made by Jimi Hendrix's stepsister and estate holder Janie Hendrix to the LA Times as part of a feature on the celebrated guitarist.
What we heard: In 2009, Activision went on a rhythm-game bender, releasing stand-alone games ranging from Guitar Hero 5, Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero: Van Halen, and Guitar Hero: Smash hits to spin-offs DJ Hero and Band Hero. Late in 2008, it appeared as if legendary rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix, too, would receive his own installment in the Guitar Hero franchise. However, considering Activision's new stance on the slumping rhythm genre, that occurrence seems more and more unlikely.
Of course, that's to say nothing of rival MTV Games and Harmonix. On the eve of Hendrix's newest posthumous release--Valleys of Neptune, due March 9--Janie Hendrix told the LA Times that Sony Music intends to make the rocker's catalog "available through every type of media." Janie went on to note that one facet of that proliferation would be "a new edition of Rock Band" that would be out by the end of the year.
Harmonix has certainly entered the business of making band-exclusive installments in its Rock Band franchise. Last year, the studio found success with The Beatles: Rock Band, which has sold more than 1 million units worldwide. MTV Games and EA Partners are also collaborating on Green Day: Rock Band, which will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii this year.
Thus far, only one song from Hendrix's catalog has made it into the Rock Band franchise. A playable version of "Fire" from the guitarist's debut album Are You Experienced was available in last year's Lego Rock Band.
The official story: Unfortunately, Jimi Hendrix Experience: Rock Band doesn't currently appear to be in the cards. An MTV Games representative told GameSpot that "We are not doing a stand-alone game" devoted to Hendrix's music.
That said, it appears as if Harmonix and Hendrix's estate plan to expand the famed musician's offerings in the Rock Band platform. "While we have not made any official announcements regarding Jimi Hendrix and Rock Band, we are excited to say that we are in discussions to bring more of his music to our platform. Stay tuned," the MTV Games rep said.
Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus that Harmonix is at work on Jimi Hendrix Experience: Rock Band. Looking not bogus that additional Hendrix music is headed to the Rock Band platform.
@jazilla Sorry dude I didn't think me liking Jimi Hendrix would upset you so much I actually went back to see what I said.... I didn't actually say anything out side I really wanted Jimi Hendrix rock band and yes I plan to light my guitar on fire just like him!!!
JUST RELEASE A EXPANSION PACK!!!
@lazycomplife Agreed on the $100 Rock Band DLC plan, not a bad idea at all!
They should have a lifetime DLC package for $100 for rock band, and you get to download any songs forever. Rock band DLC sucks up so much money, especially for us music fans. Now they're going to release a Rock Band for popular artists one-by-one? When will this stop? You don't need a new disc. It's the same game. Following the beatles career was fun, but they're really the only band that deserves their own game. Green day? I mean seriously. Hendrix sounds like fun. I'm personally an indie fan so I don't get much in the way of any songs that I listen to. Maybe if they had an Of Montreal DLC pack. That would be so fun. But DLC + new games is so much money...
just because guitar hero is goin down dont flaunt your success by giving out full games and stick to 1 new rock band game every 2 years and lots of dlc's in between
Deepfreeze32 @ GOOD THING ZEP AIN'T GONNA GO GH OR ROCKBAND. I don't want no posers to listen to the Masters musics just because they appeared in a game! Don't you curse Robert Plant, he knows Chuck Norris mate!
Agreed 100% with sk8rlink. Led Zeppelin ain't happening anytime soon, sadly. CURSE YOU ROBERT PLANT!!!!!
Haha GH. So long, crappy series.
Imagine this...Led Zeppellin coming to RB, I would cry out of hapiness lol, I still canīt believe they picked a poseur band like Green Day :S hope Harmonix doesn't go al Activison on us
Bring on the GH, not RB series. Any classic music is great. haters just dont buy it
I told that Guitar Hero had him on the series! Not on EA's game!
i'd probably buy that. = ) i love jimi hendrix's music, especially their last album
I really hope this is true.
Best guitarist ever!
I remember Slash saying just before GH: Metallica they were doing a GH: Hendrix
lol
How bout no rock band or guitar hero game ever again
How about 'Pink Floyd' rockband instead.
@JOem316 yeah, jimi hendrix is one specific person, but the rest of the band is amazing as well. if this game is made, it will be an awesome addition to the series!
Meh, at least this will be a treat for fans of the guy..... *tries to keep self from bashing rhythm games*
i wouldn't buy Jimi Rock Band even if it came with a bandana full of LSD
And YES, he would turn over in his grave to see this.
I'm sorry, this is Rock Band. Hendrix is a man, not a band. I personally don't see Hendrix as a star a group of people want to party as a band to play his music.
@ebookerd1: the article said that this isn't even in the works. did you read the article?
Hendrix would be spinning in his grave if he knew he was gonna be on some game with plastic, clinky toy guitars.
hope they don't make to many band exclusive rockband games a year. That's what guitar hero did and look where it got them!
This is about damn time! This is about all I really wanted in the first place.
Isn't it funny how on any post about rhythm games, the comment thread always turns into a "why do they keep making these games?" and "play a real instrument" vs "stop whining and don't buy it if you don't like it?" Hendrix music is probably coming to Rock Band. For the second camp, this could be something to look forward to. As far as the first camp goes, we get it: you hate rhythm games. So go play whatever it is that you do like and stop bringing everyone else down.
count me in for a new game or tracks. There are a few artists that I am dissapointed that we don't have much of on Rockband and he is one of them. I would love to see some Tool as well but the fact that they want nothing to do with Mtv will prevent that from ever happening.
This would be pretty sweet. I would love some more Jimi Hendrix's tracks though.
Why are some of you all complaining about possible DLC, I have Rock Band 2 and haven't bought a music game since it came out. DLC is the new way to release music for this genre, unlike activision who keeps pumping out entire new games. Rock Band has the new formula down. I am fine with this and look forward to picking up a few new Hendrix songs.
See how people can abuse and get rich by a using a dead person? :)His stepsister needs some extra money I guess....
This Genre of video game is really bringing down the Gaming Industry Activision has said they have lost several millions on the guitar hero brand because it doesn't move anymore I am not aware of Harmonix stats with Rock Band but I am sure they will be along those same lines. They need to stick to the original format of guitar hero 1,2,3 etc.
i wanted this since day 1, but it doesn't make sense on the "Rock band" franchise, it must be GUITAR HERO!!!
Enough with the music games already, seriously
lol these aren't "new" games. It is simply new songs tacked on to an old game. I'm sure they are laughing to the bank with these games. The cost of the game is basically just licensing the new songs.... rehash the old engine and voila you have a brand new $60 game. Congratz.
Have these games not died yet. It was cool and fun.. like 3 years ago.
Great.. meanwhile, Gh is too cheap to carry Hendrix dlc across from world tour. ACTIFAIL!
at lease make it for dlc and like hendrix and a character add-on.... but yeah.. but some protest the hero would be nice :D
This would have been the best music game ever, just because of the source material.
Rock Band Tool plz How many more times do I have to say it? T_T
Guitar Hero Megadeth is all I want! :(
Stop it T_T
THRILLLLLLER! THRILLUHUHUHUHUHHUH! ...wait, crap
@aryeec Dream Theater RB would be freakin sweet, but show some respect to Hendrix buddy!
hmm.. i liked the beatles rock band, and SUPER EXCITED ABOUT GREEN DAY ROCK BAND, but i wouldnt be into a hendrix RB... i think DLC is the right way to go..
If Jesus was a guitarist, Hendrix will still win.
...screw Hendrix and Green Day. I want a Dream Theater RB.
i want a micheal jackson rock band. who's with me?
As much as i love green day (except their new album and warning BLAH) i would say jimi hendrix is a better candidate for a rock band game/dlc seeing as the guitar parts would be awesome. rb green day is going kick some serious ace on drums (as would jimi hendrix their drummer rocked) at times but the guitar is going to be E-A-S-Y. maybe fun, but easy. then again ringos drum charts in rb beatles was flippin easy on nearly all the songs but people overlooked it because of their undying love for the beatles.
