Kazuo Hirai steps down as Sony Computer Entertainment chairman

Father of the PlayStation stepping down from SCE roles, but will remain president and CEO of Sony Corp.
Sony Computer Entertainment announced recently on its executive appointments briefing that Kazuo Hirai will be stepping down from his position of representative director and chairman of the division. He will now be participating as a member of the board in a part-time fashion.
On the official report, the new representative director as well as president and group CEO for the division will be Andrew House. Hirai will remain president and CEO of Sony Corporation.
Kazuo Hirai joined Sony Computer Entertainment in August 1995. Since then, he has played a vital role in Sony's success with the original PlayStation console and the PlayStation 2.

A true gentlemen and a true visionary. He knew what consumers want ed before THEY knew what they wanted. And that was the beauty of the PS2 and the PSX.
The PSX opened doors to gaming like no one else did at the time. That was Kaz. I worked at Sony for 5 years and they were good years. But his were better. Here's hoping the best to you Kaz!!

@MelodicMizery I agree with you. Sony has made some HUGE mistakes in the last 3 years. Example: Download caps, backwards compatibility (Forcing you to download a PS2 game you already own to play it on a PS3 because they said they wouldn't support it?), close to ZERO support for Vita (Skype not functioning, little to no content, proprietary memory card), poor hardware lifespan... just to name a few!

@buying1999 I own a RRR 360, your statement doesn't instill too much confidence in me. Btw, I own a PS1,PS2,PS3,Xbox,Xbox360,Wii,3DS and PSP so I'm no fanboy for either console.

1 Like @moviequest14 I won't get into which console is best, as I have all 3 and enjoy/ed them all quite well. I will, however, add that at least when my 360 got the RROD in AND out of warranty, Microsoft still fixed it for free each time and all I had to pay for was shipping. Sony wanted me to pay $130 to fix my PS3 with the YLOD and repeatedly lied to me over general knowledge that any person dealing with technology for years would know.Of course that has nothing to do with the actual consoles and, as I said, I still love them all. I think that just as a company, Sony is the most intolerable.
Not all that surprising given he's got the Sony top job. And well done to House for getting the top PlayStation job.
3 Like He totally botched the whole outage thing and put alot into the vita which is meh at best. All I'll say is its about time. Maybe now he can focus on selling 3D tvs nobody wants, and thats why sony loses BILLIONS of dollars, yet this guy still keeps his job, amazing.

That didn't last long. So he's not going to have any say in the gaming division anymore? That doesn't sound good considering how much money they've been losing money.
Who was the guy they wanted to get rid of because he cost Sony millions with the failed launch of the PS3? I am only referring to the first year the PS3 was on the market, when it was $600. I thought it was this guy?
@Vodoo yah but now sony makes something crazy like 23 million per day off the ps3 through the ps store, adds, and selling the units still
1 Like Well it's certainly good to know he'll still have some involvement on that side of Sony as he was the one who built it into the success that it is. Obviously though I'm sure it would've been a daunting task to being chairman of SCE AND CEO of the whole freakin' company, lol.
7 Like Good get rid of this guy Playstation needs to go in a new direction anyway, no more Ps Move,no more monkey see monkey do approach to gaming. I miss the Ps2 days where the companys focus was on quality games.
Shame for Playstation as Kaz is a great CEO, ahwell I guess it's just good news for the rest of Sony that they will be getting more attention.ALso not that surprsied at this news due to him not talking at E3 this year.
This is probably just me being a Fallout fanboy but.....House is in control of Playstation! that's just awesome from a name standpoint ;) I'm sure Kaz will just go and fix the other parts of the company that are struggling :D
hopefully he can get Sony making decent laptops again, since buying mine the options all seem really cheap and rubbish, no decent options anymore,,, I like my laptop, but when it dies I wont be buying another one from Sony unless they improve.

He did become the 'abusive father to the playstation brand' with PS3 - but still he is the 'biological' father of playstation and Hirai the step-in-dad - GS get the facts right plz :P
4 Like People need to stop being ignorant when it comes to what console is best. The battle between the two units is what drives this industry to be better and as consumers we get to reap the push for a more technologically advanced console.
The gaming part of sony is doing well from what I have heard, but the rest of the company is not. Kazuo Hirai is probably freeing up time so that he can deal with the problem areas of the company more.

1 Like He was great during the PS2 era, but totally shares the blame for the botched PS3 launch.
@DiscGuru101 I blame Kutaragi for the botched launch. Hirai was promoted to SCE President soon after the PS3's launch (meaning he had to deal with the decisions that had already been made). I more or less see Kaz Hirai as the guy who helped turn the PS3 brand around by introducing the slim models and helping to reduce the cost.
I think Hirai will help Sony Corp. get back on the right track. He's a fantastic businessman.
