This is great news, Hideo is a master of his craft, and I expect nothing but excellence. Glad to hear he has been doing alright, and busy at work. I am absolutely drooling for a brand new mgs!
Metal Gear creator says he's finally ready to take the wraps off the tech he's been working on since Metal Gear Solid 4.
Hideo Kojima is nearly ready to show the world what he's been working on for the last four years. In a piece on the official PlayStation Blog commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Metal Gear series, Kojima revealed that he's planning to show off his new Fox Engine technology August 30.
While Kojima didn't say how the unveiling would take place or if he'd be showing off the first game built on the Fox Engine, he did specify that the event would be held in Japan. After recognizing problems with the Japanese style of making games, Kojima said he spent a year and a half visiting studios worldwide to refine the development process.
"The Fox Engine is nearly finished, but the only way to be sure it works is to create a game at the same time and improve the engine with our tools as we go along," Kojima said, adding, "Production studios in Japan are nearly extinct, a fact that we have recognized for nearly 10 years, and although the Fox Engine is not finished we are ready to show what it can do."
The first game built on the Fox Engine is being developed under the name Project Ogre. Kojima first talked about the project last year, saying the development team was still in the planning phase, experimenting with ideas and conducting research. He has since said players would be able to explore the game's world freely, and should still be able to find new things to keep them playing even 100 hours into the game.
So excited to see what Mr. Kojima has to show. I really hope we get some kind of MGS5. Either way, I can't wait!!
They should redo the original Metal Gears instead of going forward in the story. I dont want another geriatric snake, an overdone Raiden, or an annoying Akiba.
The two MSX metal gears really do need to be remade. MGS1 probley wont be remade anytime soon since he already did that once on the game cube (never played the remake myself) and the PS2/PSP games are to young to remake at this point. But since we all know he's going to make another MGS after the events of mgs4.. I just hope its a new character all together. I love Raiden, but he's a cyborg now, so he wouldnt work for a main MG game anymore. Snake isnt dead YET.. but I dont want him to be in MGS5 as the main character.. though I would like him to be in the game for a bit, atleast to SEE him die. MAYBE Sunny is meant to be the next main character? She grows up and gets trained by Raiden, Hal, Meryl, Johnny and so on? But if its not Sunny I'd like to see a new character trained by that group anyway.
@Slipknotdayof9The events of MGS5 are most likely going to be set between Portable Ops and Peace Walker and between Peace Walker and the original Metal Gear. It is going to cover Les Enfants Terribles incident and steps of young Solid Snake. Quite possibly it also may cover the events of the original Metal Gear. So the main characters are going to be Big Boss and Solid Snake. The main setting is going to be Africa. It's also going to be more open and has less cutscenes.
Graphics wise MGS4 was great at the time.. but didnt age as well. Long syestem span probley didnt help ether lol. It still has GREAT graphics, but its not the best game of the syestem in that area anymore (still beats most games though). Otherwise MGS4 is near perfect even today. Same thing happened with MGS2... then MGS3 came out and reclaimed the crown. XD Though each game is still better then anything else I've ever played.
tbh I would love MGS4 to have some DLC, a couple of extra chapters and maybe a bonus chapter to play with Raiden to tease the new Metal gear rising would be so lovely. Would give me another reason to play MGS4 again a lot other than the new trophy update they are giving it.
This shouldnt be this way
If you complain about the long overly preachy cutscenes of Metal Gear Solid, then you are not a Metal Gear Solid fan, because the cutscenes are part of the experience and what makes the game unique. MGS would not be the same game without the intellectually challenging language, subject matter, and cutscenes.
@misterbanks87 As a metal gear solid fan i can say i did not care for mgs4 like i thought i liked it cause i was just an ignorant mgs fan, but i felt like he focused way to much on to many areas. I mean look at all the other mgs games and how they are pretty much focused on a set environment and made it a really cool atmosphere. But i mean the beginning of mgs4 was cool but did we really need to go to Europe. I would have probably loved the game more if you would have just stuck with the middle east environment. I felt in mgs4 there was kinda pointless parts that really did not interest me compared to all the other mgs games EXCEPT Peace walker. How could they take boss battles out and just throw the same battles with just different vehicles did not enjoy that.
@misterbanks87 Also, Kojima originally wanted to work in the movie business, so you can see why he makes his cutscenes very cinematic. It's cuz he wants it to feel like a movie that you actually play. :)
an engine that allows him to develop even longer cutscenes for MGS 5.....so we end up watching a movie rather than play a game.....MGS 5 will be on 2 Blu Rays with 1 1/2 of it filled with nothing but cutscenes.....

@fanaticsm Stupid or just trolling? I guess both.
@Blinded_ColonyHe's exagerating but I get his point. I couldn't finish MGS4 because of the frequent overlong cutscenes. It just kills a game for me to be interrupted so often and for so long in a game. FF13 same problem.
@wumpscutnut I think you are reaching a bit when you say MGS2 and MGS4 had even close to the same amount of cut scene time. I love the series but MGS4 was more of a movie than a game.
@wumpscutnut It IS a kick to the nuts of MGS fans when the gameplay of MGS4 really felt like it could be the great finish we were hoping for; the controls were tight, the gunplay was satisfying, the stealth suit worked like a charm, but there were so many cutscenes we barely got a chance to really embrace it (aside from MGO...;_;7). Sure, MGS games were always big on story, but there was still a good enough balance between story and gameplay it really kept you engaged, for some people, MGS4 had too much interruptions, it's not about being a 'true MGS fan' or not, even true MGS fans hate MGS4
@megawalrus ARE YOU CONTROLLED BY S.O.P right now. WHO ARE THE PATRIOTS ANSWER ME!
@wumpscutnut The fact is the cutscenes AND story were both horrible... most people played the game hoping for the advertised glorious gameplay, which was in the end, mediocre at best, and very undeserving of the high ratings.
@roganth "Start then X" That solve your problem you guys. If not interested just skip cutscenes and continue playing. It's so easy.
Some people like to play games for the gameplay, I guess that means I am not a true MGS fan then.
BTW I don't like GOW.
@roganth Then I suggest you and the other guy here go back to Gears of War or Uncharted or another 3rd person action game. MGS's main point is it's superb storyline and characters and every game is fillind with very long cutscenes. MGS2 had nearly as many as MGS4. If you couldn't finish MGS4 because the cutscenes then you aren't really a MGS fan because a real fan loves the cutscenes.
@Blinded_Colony but being a MGS fan i REALLY REALLY hated the long and at times boring / preachy cutscenes of MGS 4.......
@Blinded_Colony stupid mostly.....
if MGS5 will be running on this new engine then it's most likely going to be on the PS4 or new xbox... but i really hope MGS5 will come out before both next gen consoles...
@yoalex232 Why? Do you can have another out dated current gen console game? The current consoles have been tapped a long time ago and are so old that it's just disgusting now. I can't even play console games anymore. The hardware is 7 years old dude.
I'd rather wait another year or two and get a new MGS game on a new console with updated hardware than those 7 year old, outdated machines.
@wumpscutnut Gameplay > Graphics. Seriously who cares how old the hardware is, id rather get a game that has 100% pushed the limits to the console its released on than to get a game on a new console that doesnt know how to maximize its potential
@wumpscutnut well I don't want the next gen console to come yet because the systems are obviously gonna be either $700 or $1000, in between there... and the way i see it shit isn't going well for most people when it comes to games and money, its hard for me to spend a lot for a new system, so i will either wait for a price drop after 2 years or bite the fucking bullet and get the new next console it is i want... and also the consoles of today are going to be just a thing of the past just like the ps2 or the old school xbox and soon they will stop making $60 games for them or just stop completely, everything will drastically change... and the people stuck with a ps3 or 360 are going to be screwed...
@megawalrus When you look at the things the PlayStation 3 is still capable of what's the rush? Uncharted 3 was spectacular and Killzone 3 was beautiful. If the studios get the backing and have the money it pays off, unfortunately there's too many games just being rinse and repeated and ported though. The consoles are more than capable for the time being (look at The Last of Us) it's just the developers wanting to play it safe and not spend loads of money.
@wumpscutnut the gameplay on the games isn't living up to the graphics though... Think there needs to be an overhaul in that department. The only 3 games I can think of this gen that were fun to play and worth the $60 overall for their longevity, were red dead, dark souls, and skyrim
@yoalex232 I get what you are saying, spending a lot of money is never fun even though I think the new consoles will probably be around $500 maybe up to $700. But it's long overdo man.. 7 years for a console is a very long time and if you have ever seen a gaming PC running a GTX 680 GPU then you would know how old and dated these console really are and how much they are holding videogames back from their potential. Even a GTX 260 puts consoles to shame.
@wumpscutnut Here's an example of exactly why developers managed to get away with little innovation in most franchises in the last decade.
I have not been on my account for a long time but this is worth commenting on and all I have to say is THIS IS GONNA BE FREAKIN AWESOME! Also those who feel MGS is just a long movie probably just never figured out how to stop Psycho Mantis from reading your mind all the way back in MGS1. There better be alot of cardboard boxes in this one too Hideo.
This should come from Kojima himself
Really looking forward to seeing what this is. If I'm honest I was starting to think Kojima was running out of ideas. This should be interesting.
I sure as hell hope he announces it along with MGS5, and also as a PlayStation exclusive.
That's nothing personal to the other guys, but Metal Gear is undoubtedly one of Sony's biggest hitters, be a shame for the competition to get it.
