Marvel looking for Avengers game partner
Comic maker confirms rights to make a game based on Earth's Mightiest Heroes are once again available, currently "in early stages" of exploring a new publishing and licensing deal.
The Avengers movie-based game that was in the works at THQ may have fallen, but Marvel Comics isn't ready to disassemble the superhero group's gaming aspirations just yet.
"The rights for a video game based on Marvel's Avengers IP have reverted back to Marvel," a Marvel spokesperson today confirmed to GameSpot, adding, "The company is in early stages of exploring potential publishing and licensing opportunities."
If such a partnership comes to fruition, it would mark the Avengers' first gaming project since 1996's rarely seen Data East arcade fighter Avengers: Galactic Storm. Data East also handled the supergroup's best-known gaming excursion, the 1991 arcade beat-'em-up Captain America and the Avengers, which received a number of console ports in the following years.
Individually, the Avengers are no strangers to games. The main characters of the upcoming Avengers film--Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Iron Man--have all starred in their own feature films and accompanying game adaptations in recent years.
The Avengers is set for a theatrical release next summer and will feature a star-studded cast including Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, and Samuel L. Jackson.
*cough cough* raven software for the win?
@godzillavskong :- I second that idea. If the case happens then lets hope its more like Ultimate Alliance 1.
@Sirbobislost: yep. DC Comics has been part of the Warner group of companies since the 60s. It is no coincidence that all the DC superhero movies were produced by WB.
@firehawk998 Indeed. While I do like Sega as a company, they really haven't done anything special with the Marvel license, except release some subpar games. Hulk was decent and Iron Man was a extreme headache to control. Raven software, the guys that did the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series would probably do a good job, although I liked the first one better than the second.
I have a feeling they'll just give it to activision or sega and they'll make a horrible movie-based game. I gotta say i really loved captain america and the avengers on SNES, one of the toughest side-scroller beat-em-ups i've ever played.
If they do a game based on the movie, probably is gonna fail. They should make a classic arcade beat em up base on comic, with today graphics! Im sure that will sell. And give the game to SEGA/PlatinumGames
This already has fail written all over it The Movie comes out next May and we know Marvel is gonna want the game out in time to coincide with the Movie. there's no way they'll be able to make a competent Super hero game in just 8 months.
When mentioning Avengers games you guys left out Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1&2 those are there most recent game outings and there best.
The cartoon was awesome.
So long as Sega doesn't make it I'm down LOL Would be nice to see another superhero/comic book game or series that doesn't suck. Maybe they should have Rocksteady do it LOL
For the love of god, no! I mean really destroy my childhood why don't you!? They better not mess this up!
As long as they don't get Sega to do it. I mean, after all of their games got horrid reviews and are downright bad.
this game will suck as hard as the movie!
I still don't understand how some of these companies make bad super hero games. I mean seriously, how can you screw up video games for Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, etc. They really gotta stop rushing the games if they wanna make money, getting sales based on the fact that the movie's out just won't cut it anymore, it's like they're %100 reliant on the mothers who will get their children the game from "that cool looking Avengers film"
I think it should be done open world style with a similar style to the spiderman games, infamous and prototype so any of the developers that made those games should make it. I would also suggest Rockstar but they need time to make their usual perfection.
Well whoever Marvel chooses lets hope that its not Sega . Whatever games they have made with the Marvel Franchise were awful. Captain America. Hulk and Iron Man deserves way better.
I honestly can't think of a good developer/publisher that can rush a game for release by the time the movie is out, and actually make it good. UNLESS, they re-skin a current game, and add few changes. Ahah! This could play like Warhammer.
I hope its not going to be based off of the failure that will be the Avengers Movie, if it is, Ant Man and Wasp, founding Avengers probably wont be in, its bad enough founding Avengers are cut out of the film.
@jamesh-42 Warner is DCs parent company?
@Darth_Nater307: you mean the Rocksteady that was purchased by DC Comics' parent company?
Get Radical. They did a great job with Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.
@JokerPRO10: I know that, but I just thought that since they own Marvel now they would become more involved with the brand.
This should have been announced 2 years ago.
plus it would be rushed to meet the movie deadline
I would rather this game not be made, because it's going to be based off of the movie. Now if we were talking about a game based on the comics then hell yeah.
@soulless4now why Disney never made a marvel game or a movie
I'm surprised it's not being made by a Disney studio.
should give to rocksteady or activision
If it has anything to do with the movie, it will suck, like every other single movie to video games adaptation in the history of movies to video games adaptation. Goldeneye being the exception.
anyone but sega!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seeing their track record with other Marvel movie-based games, Marvel shouldn't give it to SEGA. I do agree with with you guys that they should give the rights to Rocksteady.
Avengers sounds good. Need to give us a Marvel Two in One game! I love Ben Grimm!!!!
The Avengers game was looking pretty good before THQ's fall-out. I hope someone just continues that because making a game from scratch this late in the game will drop the quality alot.
@X_Colbert_X Im a writter but count me in! also im great with gameplay mechanics :P
Avengers: Earth's Mightest Heroes. I hope Black Panther T'Challa is in this game.
Yeah...SEGA!!!
How about Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3? That would make my day, and it would be MUCH better than a RUSHED movie tie-in. COME ON ALREADY!
um, the THQ game that got cancelled? other than that..it's too late. there's no way any team can make anything decent in less than 8 months. unless they make it completely separate than the movie(s) and take their time, it's going to be crap.
All right guys, I guess I'll step up to the challenge of creating this game. I'm going to need a team though... Who else is with me?
The THQ Avengers trailer notwithstanding I don't want an Avengers game or any comic book based game unless it is it's own game meaning it stands on it's own based more on the comics and not a big name film. X-Men Legends 1&2 were awesome games because they were closer to the comics and not tied to any of the films and those game did a good job of throwing the X-men in a good RPG. One more thing, I like the Avengers but if I was going to consider playing a game based on those heroes I'd rather have any version of the team WITHOUT HULK!! Use Ant Man and Wasp, Hawkeye Even Vision would be preferable to Hulk.
Whoever makes it lets just hope that it won't be based on the Avengers movie. I would have hoped that they would have learned after the last Batman game that you don't need a movie to sell superhero games. You just have to make it great and it will sale.
RockSteady or who ever did The Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction
Wanna know who I think should make this game? Capcom. I really loved the Marvel games made by Capcom in the past and I think that they would do a good job.
While I personally think the people over at Rocksteady walk on water and can do no harm, I don't see them taking the IP due to their ties with WB. It's too bad. Honestly, whoever they do choose I would just love an arcade style brawler done correctly. Sever movie-tie ins, sever expensive voice-acting. Focus on some awesome arcadey action type gameplay, like an homage to the old 90's arcades with a modern twist, and you can count me in.
i was thinking the same thing rocksteady or 2k
...rocksteady!!!!!!
This is because those dudes making De Blob 2 (who posted dev screenshots of their avengers game, including a Nyan Hulk) went bankrupt lol.
If Disney decides to do it internally hopefully Junction Point can do it. I'm not sure what else they are working on though.
Let's hope they don't go with Sega anymore.
like i said, disney is beginning to reel everything under it's banner.
