Max Payne 3 Painful Memories DLC out December 4

Four new maps for Rockstar Games' action-shooter arriving next week free with Rockstar Pass, $10 otherwise.

Rockstar Games is inviting players to experience Max Payne 3 Painful Memories next week, the company announced today. The game's Painful Memories expansion arrives December 4 and is free for those with a $30 Rockstar Pass. The content can be purchased separately for $10 on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC.

The Painful Memories downloadable content for Max Payne 3 includes four new maps (Roscoe Street Subway, Marty's Bar, Shoot First, and Canal De Panama) for the game's multiplayer component. In addition, the expansion adds the IMG 5.56 and UAR-21 assault rifles, new avatars and items, as well as the Hangover Burst. This causes enemies to respawn with fuzzy vision, and reduced stamina and health.

Max Payne 3's Painful Memories DLC follows previously released expansions Local Justice, Hostage Negotiation, and Disorganized Crime. The fifth and final map pack for the game--Trickle Down Economics--is slated to arrive at a later date.

"Painful Memories" sounds like a fitting name for a single player DLC. Oh well.

I really wish that they made Single Player DLC instead of multiplayer maps that I know I'll never play.

@Rivboets7 This game is so much better on xbox than ps3 just like every game ever made. Playing this game on ps3 is very payneful.

Max Payne 3 was a joy to watch from a graphical and written standpoint but had absolutely terrible gameplay. I think the focus on multiplayer and DLC expansion doesn't help my already poor opinion of this sequel.

@loopy_101 I agree with you on the multiplayer focus being a drag - particularly as single-player DLC might have been great (there is a wealth of story to fill in the blanks between Max Payne 2 and 3) - but the gameplay in this game was awesome. It was a really good (and very challenging) mix of traditional Max Payne bullet time antics and more modern cover-shooter mechanics. It made diving into cover a necessity, unlike the random bullet time dives into the middle of rooms that drove the original games.

If someone told me 9 years ago that Max Payne 3 would be like this i would have laughed at them, but here we are with this... which is a shame but i guess modern gaming caught up with him.

I would love Single Player extra content for Max Payne. I'm not sure Rockstar quite understand that multi-player is not what fans want... well, at least, not this Max Payne fan.

MP?  No thanks!  There are enough games to play.  Plus, I can get 2 games on Steam or 4 on GOG for the price of this crap.

Do people even play this still? Last time I played it was just incredibly laggy and had so many problems. Even after patches. Oh and I hear there are loads of hackers now.

"Painful Memories" is exactly what I have when I think back some time where I "played" a few minutes between the lengthy cutscenes over at a friends place.

Back then when we checked out multiplayer there were about 200 people online, last time we checked it was a meager 40-ish - Yeah, Rockstar, multiplayer is definitely where the core of the game is, keep telling it to yourself.

And it's not "free" either way, the Rockstar pass cost more than what the DLCs are worth when bought one by one, besides a few of the DLCs were abandoned anyways which lessens the value of the pass even more.

Say, are the cutscenes skipable in the meantime ? (have the bugs been patched)

Are there new singleplayer story chapters ? (or editors to create our own)

Is there offline "skirmish" style missions ? (basically the multiplayer maps against bots)

Did you get rid of the Rockstar Club launcher, account registration and forced online nonsense ? (offline mode doesn't work)

No ? Well, then keep working on it, because until then I have no intention of buying it anytime soon. (with these restrictions I won't even get a complete pack of it in a -75% sale, all the trouble isn't worth my time)

@bloody-hell dude cutscenes replace loading screens in this game that's why they are(for the most part) not skipable

bloody-hell
bloody-hell like.author.displayName 1 Like

@puppet12ca You are somewhat correct, but only somewhat - The next map area is stream loaded during the cutscene.

We ran it off 2 SSD disks in RAID1 and none of the cutscenes were skipable, also we monitored disk access (read / write) with a separate tool and it showed the streamed level loading was finished within just a few (2 to 4-ish) seconds at most, yet you still had to watch the multiple minute long cutscenes to the end, bashing the skip cutscene button. (only to repeat it over and over and over again when you messed up)

So it seems more like a bug where the playing cutscene doesn't handle the "skip cutscene" event correctly, which should be fixed.

puppet12ca
puppet12ca

@bloody-hell oh I was going by a console version where attempting to skip a cutscene would most of the time yield a little still loading prompt in the bottom corner until it progressed significantly enough for the stage to load

It's not FREE either way cuz you have to pay for the Rockstar Pass duh (-__-)

Max Payne franchise has always been about great story-telling and overall single player experience. Max Payne 3 lacks both. While I do enjoy the multiplayer and all that it offers, I just wish they pay more attention and gives good o' Max Payne more life. All I have seen is a ranting old man's monologuing throughout.

@hibikino I don't understand the whole claim that the story was lacking.. Nor that the single player experience wasn't great (I didn't touch multiplayer). I thought it was rather gripping, but maybe its because I had the previous games' stories fresh in my mind, having played all 3 games in a row.. Actually, as far as shooters go, I'd probably say Max Payne 3 was one of if not the best shooter I've played in years. Awesome story, a developed and interesting character, AND visceral combat. *shrugs*

@hibikino Max Payne 3 is a portrait of a man, if you don't care about Max's plight chances are the game just wont work for you.

@hibikino I'm sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy Max Payne 3 as much as you did the older ones, but I feel like you may be remembering Max in the wrong way. He's never been "full of life", he's always been a morose nihilist, maybe more so in MP3 than before but that's pretty much the natural consequence of all that he's been through throughout the events of Max Payne all the way to the setup for Max Payne 3.

I find it funny that Max Payne 3 just keeps getting multi-player DLC when I don't think that's the main reason people bought the game. I know I wouldn't shell out any money for this if I had the game.

Psmitty456

The game is sitting in my mail box waiting to be played, can't wait to get home! So will playing MP before completing the game ruin any of the SP? I don't want to spoil the game but the MP looks like fun.

@Psmitty456 It shouldn't.....But playing the SP first definitely gives you a feel for the MP game.

cynicalundead

@SythisTaru I came here to say the same thing. Every time I read one of these stories for a Max Payne map pack I keep hoping for more single player DLC or something like Undead Nightmare. It would be so sweet. The action in this game and the blood/ gore is totally fitting of a zombie kind of game.

I am afraid that it will never happen though, for one the game didn't sell very well, and two Activision does it, and R* doesn't seem to have a meee tooo kind of approach to games. :(

"The game's Painful Memories expansion arrives December 4 and is free for those with a $30 Rockstar Pass," ....I just love the way of how they term this statement to sound so great when in fact it's so misleading in that either ways you have to pay for the content rather than get it for free as you were suppose to when you initially coughed over your cash to buy the game, lol!!

I love how the only interesting DLC they ever really announced...the co-op portion....is nowhere to be found....they must of realized that would've required too much work for a multiplayer that will never rival the big dogs....I understand the shareholders need their reassurance in the form of crack multiplayer but this is a single player franchise regardless of this cod world we live in.

how is this free with the season pass?  Am I missing something where they decided to refund everyone's money, the ones that bought a season pass?

Come on, is that how dimwitted gamers are perceived?  That a prerelease DLC bundle subscription is looked upon as an idiot's donation and anything they're given is a freebie?

As innocuous as it may seem, it's little things like this from the games industry (including games press) that makes me feel disgusted with games in general.

SythisTaru

@bignick217 You don't think 4 maps is worth 10 dollars? I've never played this game's multiplayer before, but do you realize how much work goes into making an entire map for a AAA game?

bignick217
bignick217

@SythisTaru Supreme Commander... 2 Map Packs.  20 maps in each pack.  Both were FREE... Mass Effect 3 has released several new multiplayer DLC's including new maps... All of them, FREE.  Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion just recently release a new patch that included over 40 new maps for the game.  Again... FREE.  Do I really need to say more?  How does that $10 for 4 maps taste you now?
