Cloud game-streaming creator David Perry says Windows maker risks being left behind if it doesn't enter new hardware business.
Microsoft has reportedly backed away from launching its own cable television network for Xbox Live, but Gaikai's David Perry believes the company should be going in the completely opposite direction. Speaking with CVG today, Perry said that Microsoft has no choice but to go so far as to launch an Xbox-integrated TV.
The move would be one of competition, Perry believes, as cloud gaming networks, such as Gaikai, enable gamers to stream content directly to their television sets without a dedicated box. Perry argues that because Sony already has TV-manufacturing capabilities and Apple has signaled its own intent to enter the space, Microsoft risks being left behind.
"Digital TVs are including all of that media stuff," Perry said. "I think the mistake that the console companies are making is not a mistake of their choice--it's the evolution they have to go through. Once the other media hubs can have games--and I don't mean Checkers, but things like Call of Duty--the public will get confused."
In January, Gaikai announced that it had signed a deal to incorporate its game-streaming technology into LG televisions. The LG Cinema 3D TVs incorporating Gaikai's technology are expected to launch in 2012.

Not for me. When the thing throws a RROD or a blue screen I won't be able to watch telly either. Besides, the telly in my house only displays soaps and celebrity/reality p1sh. If I replace it with one of these whiz-bangs, when is the gaming element ever gonna get a chance?

Microsoft has decided against it. Their is plenty of Television, Plain old cable, internet TV, Satalight TV, etc. Besides I want Xbox for Videogames, If I was wanting to watch TV. I would just turn of Xbox and watch it. Why pay $50.00 for Xbox live just to be able to watch TV? When I already have cable.

Sony is in the Electronic Media industry but they aren't exactly posting positive figures on the balance sheet. As of now, anyone who wants to compete in hardware has to face fierce competition from Samsung and Sony. And if you're in the peripheral industry, there's Apple. It may not be such a bad idea to just stick to pure gaming and let the other giants fight themselves to death in their own respective fields.

A TV that could access my Live account and allow me to purchase and play games would be nice if I just wanted to play certain games in another room of the house. Price would suck, because it would need a HD.
Gamers know what they want and the casual crowd would never buy an xbox tv. I don't think this guy is right.

I found the last comment pretty interesting but even then how expensive are these TV's going to be? 3D TV's are very expensive. You can go ahead and put your tech into those TV's but guess what; people aren't going to buy those TV's and even if they do guess what they will play on those TV's? The hardware that you believe isn't going to make it next year. He needs to stop talking to the media about his far fetched visions into the future and make his service better.
These industry watchers they think they know every thing. Sure rush another console MS while people are still buying 360's both hardware and software. Give up on 360 even though it's been turning substantial profits for the past few years. Give all that up so you can rush out a new console because some scatter brain told you to. What a knuckle head.
um, why did he not say this about sony? i mean, everyone now is getting used to cloud gaming with gakai and now the 800 pound gorilla in that market, onlive. but why the hate with microsoft? he should be scared that onlive has their tech in blu ray players, tvs and now tablets. gakai is still stuck in browsers so... like that kid said in the psp commercials: STEP YO GAME UP.
this is so beyond the near future...ok maybe it's a great idea but not for now we need quality,performance...no rrod and a better dashboard(the first priority,i don't complain about the actual one...it's ok) they need a big evolution in ^ but they also need a big evolution in marketing...many people hate the xbox360 platform just for the reason that microsoft sucks wallets.. ok we'll pay for the live subscription but when we pay for that we also want something more and just for the simple reason cause we care and we buy it (while psn is free..for now) there are so many problems to solve and they think of this? weird...
I never thought of that. Services like OnLive by themselves? Still too new. Similar services rolled into TV and included as part of your everyday cable TV package? Now that's significant. I think Gaikai is right. A lot of people, likely parents, aren't going to bother with game consoles when they can just order the same games over their cable TV's. I'm not saying this is better. What I'm saying is this can reshape the industry. @Neo_Sarevok No, you wouldn't have to lug your TV around. If your grandparents have a modern cable/sat/whatever service, you can play video games. Maybe not the games on your account, but still games.
I think this guy is looking a little too far ahead. While it's true that many new TVs have built in media hub capabilities (netflix, games, etc), the cost and performance of a dedicated high-end console is not something everyone would want built into a TV. There is still a huge market for dedicated console hardware, at least until the cost/performance of the console becomes so affordable it's included in every TV. As others have said, there would be no need for us to buy a new TV to use the next xbox as 1080p is still the max TV resolution. I would however be all for MS launching an IP TV service for the xbox. I hate my cable company and their expensive cable boxes and channel bundling. Long-term, I hope traditional cable dies, and everything is just available as real-time or on-demand streams (of course with cheap internet access for all).
Now when I go to my Grandparents, instead of lugging around the XBox, I have to lug around my TV instead? No thanks.
No thanks. I'll keep my display device separate from the content-receiving/generating devices, thanks. At no point do I want to be forced to replace one because of the other's upgrade path.
Perhaps they should focus more on their core audience,you know,the ppl who originally made 360 a succesful and recognized console by gamers... Yes,there is money in a casual market,but abandoning the original loyal audience isn't a good idea,and all this entertainment crap is a turn-off for many core gamers,and core market is still going very strong... MS should be careful about what they're doing...
What a moron. People already have TV's. An Xbox720 integrated into a 1080p television would equal a $1500 item at least. A new console box can probably be priced around $400 to $500. Ask Sony how well fancy high-end TV's are doing these days. Nobody I know is going to replace their multipurpose TV that is adequate in showing everything they need in 1080p for a high priced and specialized integrated TV set. This guy is an idiot. The hubris being demonstrated by these online streaming companies is pretty amazing considering the obstacles they face, which are considerable. No real gamer is going to have their gaming experienced diminished because of internet bandwidth limitations and data caps being implemented by all the major IP's. Anywhere you look, the Online streaming experience is significantly worse than what we already have now.
I'm sure M$ has already contacted various TV manufacturers to integrate their software into a TV just like Google has done with their TV. This guy is not saying anything that everyone with a techno business since has not realized.
Oh boy! A service that charges to stream games I never possess or have any rights to that requires me to be connected all the time to play anything at all. Its basically like paying to play all your games with latency. Who is actually subscribing to these services? Wake me up when Gaikai and OnLive run out of their angel-investor funds, and inevitably go bust.
I own 2 xboxes and 2 tvs already for system link. Dont plan on a another xbox/tv anytime soon. Downside, ISP monthly bandwidth caps, Skyrim alone would cost me hundreds of dollars to play already. Upside, few less devices to clean dust off of in the room.

seriously? big deal. only a select few people will buy a xbox tv. and i think they know that. Its one thing to ask users to pay 300 bucks for a console but asking then to pay 2,000 bucks or so for a HD tv with a xbox in it... i mean it would probebly be a fair price but .im saying its not something they "have to do" theres already enough HD tvs out there anyways honestly. Eventually, our HDTV's will be our game consoles. Sony has the edge here on Microsoft for creating a TV with built-in console-level gaming since they already have both the gaming and the electronics divisions to get it done and do it quickly. PS4 could come in 2 varieties. The first being a typical set-top box like it is today. And the other a new line of Playstation-branded TV's with the PS4 hardware built in. However, I believe we won't see these until PS5-generation. Not that it's not possible, but because I doubt any of the manufacturers are ready to make that jump yet. He's right that Microsoft needs to quit being so conservative about being cutting-edge; they are known for announcing big ideas and then scaling them back when it comes time to produce them simply because they don't want to abandon Windows and Office. The Xbox is one of the few brands they've been able to grow in their culture, primarily because (it seems) the people in charge of the project weren't taken seriously as being the future of Microsoft. But Gaikai should focus on building its own platform instead of criticizing Microsoft's. I was excited when I first heard about them, since I thought they'd provide a nice challenge to OnLive (a service I enjoy, but which frustrates me from time to time and which needs a strong competitor to make it better). Instead, they're pitching their platform to tech companies and publishers as a glorified demo delivery service. It's hard to get excited to hear that it will be included with LG TVs because so much of the infrastructure (a dedicated controller, a community of gamers, availability of top-tier games) isn't going to be there.
