Miyamoto, Retro working on 'fantastic' Wii U games
Nintendo of America president reveals Mario creator, Metroid studio building new games for upcoming console; announcements likely for E3.
The Wii U will launch with 52 games by April 2013, but there's more in the pipeline, at least two of which are from well-respected Nintendo studios and the Mario creator himself. Speaking during the latest installment of Game Trailers TV, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said new Wii U projects from Shigeru Miyamoto and Metroid developer Retro Studios are in the works.
"I could get myself fired by breaking all of the news here on your show, but rest assured, Mr. Miyamoto and the team at EAD are working on fantastic projects," Fils-Aime said. "Rest assured that Retro is working on a fantastic project. We've got big games in development that are coming that are going to continue to drive the install base of the system."
Concerning when these projects might be announced, Fils-Aime said that the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo is a likely bet. He added that it could be earlier or later, depending on how the games are progressing.
Retro Studios' most recent game was Donkey Kong Country Returns, which was released in November 2010 to a warm critical reception and sales of nearly 5 million units. The studio also collaborated with Nintendo EAD on 2011's Mario Kart 7, and was named by Miyamoto as a candidate to work on a future Legend of Zelda installment.
As for Miyamoto's project, earlier this year, he confirmed he was working on a new and original game. The iconic developer explained that "people have come to expect a lot from me," adding that he feels pressure to come through, but ultimately this does not get in the way of his development process.
