Boston Red Sox All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to headline next year's baseball release from Sony.
2K may have the multiplatform Major League Baseball rights tied up, but as a first-party publisher, Sony has been producing its own critically lauded MLB games for years. Almost ready for another go around the bases, next year's entry now has a release date, platforms, and cover athlete.
Sony announced this week that Boston Red Sox All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez will be taking the role of cover athlete for the 2012 iteration. A release date of March 6 was also revealed for the PlayStation 3 and all-new PS Vita versions.
Next year's entry will mark the first time Sony's baseball franchise is not appearing on the PlayStation 2 or PSP. It also represents the series' inaugural outing on Sony's forthcoming handheld, the PS Vita. In a comment on the official PlayStation Blog, a Sony representative said to "stay tuned" in regard to potential cross-system save portability.
MLB 12 is confirmed to support the PS Move motion controller, although it's unclear to what degree. Last year's game also had PS Move support, but only in the Home Run Derby mode.

@schmitt316 Totally agree. $60 is a lot for a roster update. Once upon a time you could buy a roster updater for a PC sports game for $5. I have the last 3 editions of MLB The Show. When the baseball itch hits me, I'll rent the game from Gameacess. BTW, what's all the fuss about the cover athlete? Who looks at the cover. Being a Montrealer, I hate all things Jays. But even I think Bautista has been a monster.
I wonder if they will have full use of the Move this year? If it does, I might just have to pick it up. They should do away with the cover athletes and go with the WS winners. Simple design with WS trophy and the winning teams stadium or team photo.

It's more of a legacy thing (Gonzo getting the cover). He's been doing it consistently year after year. Other players have had a better year, yes, but Gonzo does it more often than not. In fact Ellsbury of the Red Sox arguably had a better year than Gonzo last year.
It's hard to improve on perfection Egotte. They literally have everything in the game already and it's executed perfectly. The game looks like you're watching a game on tv.
The Show is starting to get really boring year-to-year. Let's hope they improve the total package from the ground up, starting with the upcoming release in March.
09-Pedroia(Red Sox) 10-Mauer 11-Mauer 12-Gonzalez(Red Sox). I think Sony's biggest dream is to see Mauer on the Red Sox, that way they can have the best in both worlds.
Gonzalez is only the cover athelete because he plays for a big baseball city and has a big image. The best hitters this season were Bautista and Kemp (winners of the 2011 Hank Aaaron award as best overall hitters) and the best pitchers were Verlander and Kershaw (both should win the 2011 Cy Young award shortly as best pitchers). Disappointing move by Sony...
Adrian Gonzalez??? Do you even know what Matt Kemp and Ryan Braun did this season? Especially Kemp, that dude has zero protection in that awful line up.
I love 'The Show' but I won't be dishing out $60 for what is just basically a roster update. No major league sports game should cost that much anyways.
The last one stunk. I got no hit almost every game. MLB 2K12 will be better. They have been gaining ground in the last few years and I expect them to be better than the show this year.
Sony chooses the worst cover athletes. Most likely the VIta will be a just a port of the PS3 version(which is a port of the PS2 game considering the game engine hasn't changed since MLB The Show 2006) but I wonder what extra stuff they do for the Vita version
I like it... It comes out shortly after Vita is released... I'll probably get this on it...
"potential cross-system save portability" I might have to pickup both. I hope Vita means some improvements (finally) to the handheld version.
Issues aside, MLB 12: The Show demonstrates a bright future for portable baseball games.
