More Duke Nukem coming
Duke Nukem Forever's critical lashing won't stop IP holder Gearbox from continuing to develop the crass shooter series, says Take-Two CEO.
After 14 years of development, Duke Nukem Forever went on sale last week in the face of witheringly negative reviews. However, all the bad press in the world apparently can't keep the Duke down, according to Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick. Speaking with Forbes, the executive said that the publisher is planning to release more games based on the foul-mouthed action hero.
"We don't really talk about it in detail, but you will see future Duke [intellectual property] coming from this company," said the executive when asked if a Duke Nukem movie or TV series might be in the offing.
Curiously, Zelnick dodged a question about ownership of the Duke Nukem IP, which belongs to Borderlands developer Gearbox Software. The suburban Dallas shop picked up the rights to the shooter franchise from creator 3D Realms in September 2010, several months after the latter company suspended development of Duke Nukem Forever after nearly 14 years of work. Publishing rights for Duke Nukem games remain with Take-Two, which released the latest installment in the series under its 2K Games label.

@Frame_Dragger I dunno what did I say? I was probably responding to something you said... also I am a gamespot member since you were wondering who I was.

@nrrowett Well they had continued 3D Realms old work, but I agree, the Borderlands engine would've been perfect for Duke.

Played the boring demo all the way through, started having second thoughts. Was gonna pick up DNF next day, saw the reviews so I got my money back from Gamestop. (sniff) (sniff) You used to be cool...
@King_Jeremy_77 LOL, no mate. The game is just awful, straight up ******* awful.
Gearbox used to be good. DNF & 'Furious 4' = two cheeks of the same arse
wish we could see a proper duke game soon
Amazed my they walked in and said yep that game engine will do for Duke, when they could have built it using the Borderlands engine fast and better.

They should remake Duke Nukem 3d and release it for free as an apology, say they'll do better, earn our trust, then screw us all over again in 12 years.
@tachsniper Indeed, i believe they've learned their lesson about releasing a half assed game for profits, even the greatest of fans can't appreciate that piece of junk, they'll be able to focus on making an entire game from start to finish in a couple of years probably instead of finishing off a used car that's been passed around more times than i can remember.
OMG.... DNF was a good game. I'm let down by the fact that people were expecting something extraordinary. The devs have been countless times ******* over by the publishers with major engine changes and 2-3 complete restarts to the whole project. It's not been in development for 14 years straight, it has been that way for 14 years in and out. As you can clearly see, with Take2's BS and unneeded pressure, Gearbox need to release it cause DNF wasn't gonna release anyway due to too much time being taken on it. So considering that this game was scheduled for a 2007 release, you need to understand the content you're gonna get. If you make the purchase fully aware of what you'll be getting, you'd have enjoyed it just as much as the casual gamers did.
i am hoping DNF was a quick cash in to recoup development costs for 14 years. Now lets see a real Duke game!
True duke fans will agree Duke just doesn't quite feel like Duke, Also limiting duke to only 2 weapons that's just wrong. even Duke would say WTF!!
My two cents: Gearbox just finished what 3D realms and others had worked on, under pressure from Take-Two, who had millions invested. The result: a terribly disappointing game for many. I have faith that Gearbox can make a good Duke game from scratch and under their own parameters.
Good. DNF was lackluster, yes, but it was still fun. With a better engine and less development trouble, they could craft a fantastic game. And please, don't take forever to get this done. No doubt, that was a major issue in the game being a critical failure.
Hopefully they take another 14 years before the next one comes out.
Good because DNF is awesome! I'm thinking all these reviewers just copied each others rating without actually playing the game.
Now they just have to think of a name that sounds like 'Five' somewhere, like they did with 3D and Forever. Duke Nukem Five Finger Death Punch
hopefully they will take this opportunity to build a new game engine from the ground up and make it actual fun
I was hoping Beyond Good And Evil 2 would make the nostalgia go away but that's being developed next gen. How the heck they plan that I don't know...
Hopefully it'll be improved from Duke Nukem Forever...I made the mistake of paying $50 for it, which won't be happening again. Sorry Duke, I'm still a fan, just can't afford mediocre games for full price.
@TevoxZi thanks for agreeing with me. GAMESPOT modded me for my comment. so I guess they dont like the truth. I was reported by a gamespot administer, probably one who takes cash under the table as well. oh no I lost a point!!! guess what gamespot I dont care anymore because you have posted about 5 reviews too many that are laughably biased and I have lost any fiath or love for your site. and like China you try to shut anyone up who mentions that your reviews might be biased.
@lithus I don't understand. You don't seem to be addressing anything about my actual post. Gearbox didn't make DNF. Gearbox WILL be making the next entry. Given GB's record, the next duke should be at least pretty good.
@parrot_of_adun: lol you're wasting your breath man, you're talking to a person who's trying to financially support the PC gaming community by buying "mostly" PC games (sometimes console games, but only if they absolutely have to ;)). Not kidding, flash said it in another thread......................................................But in anycase, this game was an absolute trainwreck. Crappy graphics, crippled frame rate and stupid "was only funny when i was a teen in the 90's" humor. This game just screams irony considering all the hype, money and time that went into this game. Pitchford should resign and never show his face again.
@flashn00b That makes no sense. DNF was developed by the beleaguered 3DRealms, not Gearbox. Gearbox not only has a bunch of ex-3DR guys, but also has much more in the way of resources than alot of devs. There's every reason to think the next one will be a serious improvement.
I'd too would be psyched about making games with a character as relevant as Commander Keen.
I never was a big Duke Nukem fan, so it doesn't really bother me either way. I do have Duke Nukem 3D on the Saturn, which is decent, but I had a hard time getting into it.Sad to see the game reviewed so poorly, especially with the time it took to be released, which I'm sure is hurting it's sales. Then again it is a big name title, so it could still sell well off it's name alone. Now Doom would interest me more and I can't wait to see what Id software cooks up once they are finished with it. I had a blast with Doom on the original Xbox.
haters gone hate. hail to the king. 'nuff said. p.s. @fightingfish18, @vodoo, nice to see other Sam fans here
Well, now that DNF is out, the anticipation and anxiety is over. They can get back to progressing the series postively and without the decade plus lulls between releases. On the other hand, the series could tank like Sonic.
@Vodoo Why turn Duke into Sam? I love Duke, but Sam is the only person who can truly be Serious :) I'm still waiting for Serious Sam 3
