Mystery Epic project revealed to be Bulletstorm
Next month's cover of Game Informer IDs unnamed game from Painkiller creator People Can Fly; Cliff Bleszinski now promising two official announcements on Monday--Gears of War 3 surprise already blown.
Friday began with Xbox Live accidentally revealing that Gears of War 3 will launch in April 2011. It ended with another project from Epic Games being identified, courtesy of the cover of next month's issue of Game Informer. On its Web site, the GameStop-owned magazine has unmasked the game in development at People Can Fly, Epic's Polish subsidiary.
Titled Bulletstorm, the new game is described as a shooter that has players "take on hideous mutants in a flurry of lead, all the while racking up combos that encourage variety over headshot after headshot." Though no further details about the game were revealed, the cover of the May issue did show off a protagonist battling some opponents that looked like a mix of Gears of War's Locust and some of Borderlands' badland bandits. (The cover also bears more than a passing resemblance to the box art of the original Doom.)
Epic bought a controlling interest in Warsaw-based People Can Fly in 2007, after the latter company had designed several multiplayer maps for the original Gears of War. Previously, the studio was best known for making the horror shooter Painkiller, its first expansion pack, and its console offshoot Painkiller: Hell Wars. In 2008, Epic announced that Electronic Arts would distribute the then-unnamed game, with the publisher slotting it for Q1 2011 in February.
Despite the double-whammy of announcements, Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski is still keeping up a pretense of mystery. This afternoon, he posted a Twitter message that promised "Two announcements about two upcoming games" on his Monday appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Bleszinski had been scheduled to appear on last night's show but bowed out at the "11th hour" in order to "polish" whatever he is planning to show as part of the announcement.
