Next month's cover of Game Informer IDs unnamed game from Painkiller creator People Can Fly; Cliff Bleszinski now promising two official announcements on Monday--Gears of War 3 surprise already blown.
Friday began with Xbox Live accidentally revealing that Gears of War 3 will launch in April 2011. It ended with another project from Epic Games being identified, courtesy of the cover of next month's issue of Game Informer. On its Web site, the GameStop-owned magazine has unmasked the game in development at People Can Fly, Epic's Polish subsidiary.
Titled Bulletstorm, the new game is described as a shooter that has players "take on hideous mutants in a flurry of lead, all the while racking up combos that encourage variety over headshot after headshot." Though no further details about the game were revealed, the cover of the May issue did show off a protagonist battling some opponents that looked like a mix of Gears of War's Locust and some of Borderlands' badland bandits. (The cover also bears more than a passing resemblance to the box art of the original Doom.)
Epic bought a controlling interest in Warsaw-based People Can Fly in 2007, after the latter company had designed several multiplayer maps for the original Gears of War. Previously, the studio was best known for making the horror shooter Painkiller, its first expansion pack, and its console offshoot Painkiller: Hell Wars. In 2008, Epic announced that Electronic Arts would distribute the then-unnamed game, with the publisher slotting it for Q1 2011 in February.
Despite the double-whammy of announcements, Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski is still keeping up a pretense of mystery. This afternoon, he posted a Twitter message that promised "Two announcements about two upcoming games" on his Monday appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Bleszinski had been scheduled to appear on last night's show but bowed out at the "11th hour" in order to "polish" whatever he is planning to show as part of the announcement.
@ diabloakaSAHA yeah i agree UT 1 was awesome, they wrecked it with the next games(which were alright)
@kenerhai anyway FPS's are great(so are 3rd person shooters), and there are still lots of 3rd person shooters around(maybe not as many as there were), such as the next ghost recon (future soldier), should be 3rd person as well as GTA4, Red Dead Redemption etc. and there are plenty of others to.
@kenerhai well it say's 'shooter' not FPS so it might not be first person, although it is likely to be.
Another FPS?!?!? They seem to be all the rage today. Kids nowadays with their first person games. I remember when I was a kid, almost all games were third-person shooters and you could see the badass you played as. I wish there were more 3rd person shooters.
hmm now while theyre at it how bout making a remake for the original UT game. Unreal Tournament HD ,the first UT game is the best UT game . :D . DO IT EPIC!! make it happen :)
wow these companies need to get some ducktape. i hope none of their motto's are loose lips sink ships :D
Hey it may seem like it's just gonna be generic, But truthfully epic makes some great games and im sure they will find a way to make this one worth everyones time!
Bulletstorm, I didn't expect this one. Anyway I can't wait for Gears 3. Going to be one hell of a battle.
yawn... Gears should be fun, though. Especially if it plays for longer than an hour. When is Bethesda coming out with a new Elder Scrolls?
So epic epicly fails at keeping secrets, kinda like sony. Bad puns not withstanding though, if cliffy has a third game on the making it would be awesome.
That cover doesn't look particularly distinctive or interesting (outside of the whip), but the description is interesting enough I guess. A little reminiscent of Sega & Bizarre Creation's The Club, only done with Gears-esque aesthetic sensibilities, judging by the cover. There is room for more shooters with rewards or focus on combos, something very few have done. I probably shouldn't be conjecturing too much off of a cover and a blurb.
hes going to have to really impress. I think that if there's anything we have learned in the past few months is that hype builds anticipation, but the final product needs to live up that hype. In addition, it needs to be not perfect but as foolproof as possible. if it doesnt, then tons of $$$ is lost, a fan base angry and discouraged, and hours of development wasted. of course, im talking about MW2. its still a good game but hackers, glitchers, Activision, and laziness ruined most of the enjoyment of the multiplayer. that stimulus package is disappointing too. Personally, this is a good way to introduce a new game but hes got to lose the d-bag, im better-then-everyone-else attitude. hes also got to deliver a lengthy single-player and a solid, unique multiplayer. No meleeing through walls or any of that crap. and if he cares so much about business, branch out to the ps3.
2bitSmOkEy Posted Apr 12, 2010 1:40 am GMT -12 Meh. How many times can people shoot mutants/aliens before it starts to get old? ----- about the same amount of times mario can save the princess, you dont like it go read a book
Im excited for not just Gears 3, which we all have known there would be since the original game, but this new title as well. I will be keeping a close eye on it.
All the protagonists from Epic always has the same face!! starting from the Unreal Tournament 3, followed by Gears Of War, then this title!!
It's always funny to see everyone get excited about another shooter. As if it will do anything different the 8 million other shooters that are flooding the market. XD
I cant wait till monday even i these are cliffs's surprises because I want video and I bet we will see a lot come monday. Hopefully this changes Garfield's mind about monday eh lol
Wait a second, Cliff bowed out of a hyped up airing of Jimmy Fallon's show? Isn't that the dickest of moves?
@Daian Somebody gave you a thumbs down. That means someone likes Beiber. Which also means that there is a Wii owner amongst us. We must single him out, and "remove" him... permanently. P.S Somebody should throw stones at Beiber. I know I want to.
Bulletstorm sounds like a devil may cry style game, i was wondering why cliffyb has been name dropping bayonetta and devil may cry so often in interviews recently
Well I'm sure the thing they are "polishing" is some kind of trailer to one of these games so it'll still be worth checking out Monday night.
Beh. I'm not getting on any hype wagons anymore. Games always sound amazing on paper, but how many times were we left with some half-baked product? People should learn that before selling the skin of the bear, you gotta kill it first.
