Big-screen adaptation of racing franchise set for 2014 release; Act of Valor director attached, with executive producer of She's Out of My League writing the screenplay.
Need for Speed will soon powerslide its way into movie theaters, as Electronic Arts and DreamWorks Studios today announced a partnership that gives the production company film rights to the long-running racing franchise.
Planned for a 2014 debut, the Need for Speed film is being described by EA as "a fast-paced, high-octane film rooted in the tradition of the great car culture films of the '70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise." The project will not be based on any single game in the series.
Directing the film will be Scott Waugh, best known for helming Act of Valor, a military movie starring active-duty US Navy SEALs. Possibly more relevant to the Need for Speed project will be Waugh's experience on stunt crews for dozens of films, including Torque, The Italian Job, and Biker Boyz. Waugh will be filming a screenplay penned by George Gatins, the executive producer of DreamWorks' 2010 comedy She's Out of My League. Gatins developed the Need for Speed film's story with his brother John, who is producing the film and also wrote the scripts for Real Steel and the upcoming Flight.
Production on the film is expected to start in early 2013. As for the gaming franchise, it has a new installment in the works, as Criterion Games' Need for Speed Most Wanted is set for release October 30.

It will probably end up with guns and explosions and about 5 minutes worth of racing like The fast and furious series did.

Act of valor?? seriously that movie sucked balls, okay it did not suck balls but it was so mediocre.
This is going to be just another game movie wich will be done and forgotten ...

haha resident evil is proof of what? those r the corniest f'n movies I've ever seen... entertaining due to the effects but straight doodie as a movie... i highly doubt im alone when i say that as well
@JumpoffjoeyP they make plenty of money so somebody agrees with me. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not a good movie. I hate Gone With The Wind but that doesn't mean it's not a great movie. And just so you don't think I'm comparing the two films, my point is that as long as it makes money and entertains a lot of people, it's good
@JumpoffjoeyP entertainment is all I care about in movies. As far as I'm concerned, Arnold or Bruce Willis are just as good as anyone to be on the big screen. And they must be doing something right because they've made 4 of them, and a 5th is coming soon I believe

Seriously guys??!! Criticise a movie that won't be out until 2014 and even comparing to current movies??!! I don't like EA, but I will definitely won't say anything about the movie just yet.
1 Like @Khoo1992 it's just about following a pattern. After seeing 100s of game to movie adaptations, and seeing all of them flop in a shameful way, it's a safe guess to assume this will be no different.
It's all about marketing. Put a familiar name to a generic movie and people will rush to see it. They make their money regardless of whether the film is good or bad, so why would they make any effort with it?
You must have not watched "Act of Valor" have you? Well, I guess that makes you better than me. Shame on me. That movie was horrible.
1 Like Already have our need for speed film fix, and its called The Fast and Furious franchise. Also Fast 6 and 7 are getting made, with possibility a spin off for the Rocks character from Fast 5. Do EA really think they will go toe-2-toe with a Triple A film franchise with A listers, vs their own film with most likely b-movie actors in it lol

Ooohh.. it will be a fast and furious movie but without any story at all. Just watching 90 mins of endless, speedy driving. Yeah.. so much better than doing the driving yourself... Seriously from which genius mutated these bizar ideas?
@poeticas The same reason they did Hot pursuit for the third time and did not even bother to mention it. Money and consoles. The franchise has been going down hill since NFS4 and NFS:P
@Krauklis Both Hot Pursuit and Most wanted are created to bring back the old games we knew and love. Criterions already done a great job with Hot Pursuit. So I have a good faith on them with this also.
