New 3DS unlikely, Nintendo planning next-gen portable - Miyamoto

Mario creator says latest portable will buck Nintendo's trend of iterating on design, company thinking about ideas for future-generation portable.
Despite ample precedent, Nintendo is unlikely to release a revised iteration of the 3DS, according to comments from Shigeru Miyamoto made to IGN. Instead, the famed developer said the Tokyo game giant's sights are now focused on a 3DS successor.
"I really feel like I'm satisfied with the 3DS hardware as it is. I feel like it's the best for this generation," Miyamoto said. "What we're thinking about right now is probably going to be for a future generation of handheld."
The original DS was iterated on three times with the DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL. Miyamoto went on to explain that more can be done with current 3DS hardware, as well as the 3D gaming sector in general.
Miyamoto's comments follow a report last week from Japanese business daily Nikkei that indicated Nintendo was readying a supersized 3DS model. The system was to be unveiled during Nintendo's 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo briefing and boast a 4.3-inch display. Nintendo shot down this report, calling it conjecture, and no new 3DS model was unveiled last week during E3 2012.

Let it be known that many people are owned in here for believing Miyamoto. Clearly he has egg on his face as one week after his declarations, Nintendo announced the very product he denied. A 3DS XL. I told everyone here it's Nintendo PR, they don't want to hurt sales of the current model, but nooooo...and here we are. Well, let this be a lesson to you youngins.
I know its an excuse, but making the 3DS "larger" doesn't make that much of a hardware difference. It's not like the DS lite or DSi that had significant changes.
@robfield Either way, those that just believed the PR in this article were pwned. Hopefully they learn not to trust company PR so quickly next time.....even Miyamoto isn't above lying to us.
@robfield The rumor was about a 3DS XL, a rumor Nintendo denied. The nice thing about the new larger screens on the 3DS XL are that the machine also has a better battery life than the current 3DS. I'm well aware of all of Nintendo's handhelds as I own them all. It was Nintendo PR, plain and simple...they had Miyamoto lie to us. It's fine, they were just denying a rumor. It was just odd they had Mr. Miyamoto go in front of us, only to show us one week later.

4 Like Any console is only as good as its software - support is whats required for this gen's handhelds - definately not a new hardware revision from either sony or nintendo.

The Wii U is not portable. You cannot take the Wii U controller out of range of the console and still play games on it.

1 Like Meh all I;d want from a redesign is louder speakers,lower the frame of the body from the bottom screen so no to screen scratching, and switch the body from glossy to matte. Oooh also customizable home menu
I'm gonna have to buy one now to get 'Fire Emblem 3DS.' Loved those turn-based strategy games since 'Shining Force II' on Genesis.

Your feelings are not connected with the entire gamer comunity. Only a 3DS LL can save Nintendo now, since Wii U is a bad joke like was showed in E3.

@kinghorn316 I prefer my 3DS over my Vita, in matter of games, but if N launched a 3DS XL , LL would be perfect, a 4:3 3DS would match Vita for good !
1 Like Miyamoto is probably worried that if people think a 3ds xl is just a few months away from being released that sales of the 3ds will dry up. Letting people know that the 3ds is not getting a update any time soon helps get them off the fence and out buying a 3ds. The price drop on the dsi and dsi xl were also tactics to get people off the fence and out buying the current hardware.
@digitaltiger Nintendo is playing smart. They know a lot of people have not bought the 3DS waiting for the 3DS XL, so they say they will not be releasing it so all those people go buy it, specially this december so they can make a nice profit in holidays. But you'll see, next E3 there will be the big news: "Nintendo reveals the 3DS LL with a 4" screen and 20hr battery life!".
Wouldn't surprise me if something like what you put forward is Nintendo's strategy, were probably going to hear rumours once and awhile for the next year. Or perhaps the 3ds xl will come out in December, I was hoping it was going to come out in the next month or so but no such luck.

Don't be stupid. As other said, they're gonna stick to one model of the 3DS and will not pull a billion revisions of it like t he DS and the PSP. There wil be no 3DS Lite, no 3DS LL, no 3DS jumbo, no 3DS 2000, and no 3DS Go with no cart slot. This also means that the circle pad pro shall remain an accessory and will never be permanently attached to a stand alone system. I don't know why you are crying. This is good news.

Handhelds HAVE to deliver what consoles don't. With Wii U, theyre kind of killing the handheld industry. If the tablet could used outside the home, the 3DS would be pointless.

@GinsuVictim They are making this news for the people that are waiting for a "3DS Lite" or a revision and saying it is okay to buy a 3DS now. Of course there is going to be a successor afterwards, but successors do not come until like 5-6 years after a system is released.

Actually, if anything, they're saying go ahead and buy one. The DS had so many updates, consumers were left wondering whether they should buy the newest one or wait for the next version. Nintendo is saying, no, what is out on shelves now is what the 3DS will be until it's replaced by a next-gen successor. Of course they're working on the next handheld; they probably started that before they even released the first one. That doesn't mean it's coming out any time soon.
Oh, the 3DS is co CUTE, but nothing else regrettably, come on Nintendo, gives an HD version of this toy, I want HD resolution, 1280 x 720 at least, even cellphones have it, Nintendo keeps on being cheap!... u_u
2 Like Isn't it obvious!!? The Vita came out and Nintendo was like Holy SH!T!!! We are like 2 generations behind now. Let's start working on the 3DSXL Lite and add a better battery!! Uhhhgggg, Nintendo needs to go the way of Sega and just become a game maker. Stop with the hardware mistakes. The WiiU is looking like another mistake. God I miss my Gamecube!

1 Like @moviequest14 You do know the Vita is leaps and bounds above the 3DS in power right? I was just using the battery as an example of Nintendo releasing a new iteration of the DS without much of an upgrade. The 3DS needs a new battery, dual analog sticks, OLED and a bigger screen. Now if they released a new DS with those qualities 5 years from now that would be a great message to their fan base. The Vita could also benefit from a new battery but I haven't had any issues with battery life yet. I usually play from 2-5 hours. Releasing new DS iterations every few years doesn't gain consumer confidence.
You do know that the 3DS is KILLING the Vita in sales right? I'm interested in the Vita because I am starting to become more a, "Mobile Gamer" but to knock the 3DS and praise the Vita is stupid. 3DS is a WAY better experience in terms of quality games right now by comparison. Not to mention I believe the 3D to be one of the greatest things to happen to, "Graphics" (So to speak) in TWO generations.

As a 1st party, Nintendo delivers great quality to their game, if they became third party they'll just be lazy and make cash-in year n and year out. They are in good shape now then ever so why want them to change, it's not like they are planning to kill the Wii U and 3DS like Sega want to kill the Dreamcast and the Saturn.

5 Like Great. Now show me a legitimate reason to buy a 3Ds in the first place, and we'll be all set... Not even "Resident Evil: Whatever" has caused me to bite. My DS Lite is as far as I'll be going, I think. 3D is BS, and only a gimmick tacked on for eye candy, adding nothing to the actual GAME.
You don't know what you're talking about... I can understand perhaps why you think its a gimmick because up until the 3DS it has been a gimmick in gaming but w/ some of the grade A quality games the 3DS has released I believe it to be the best thing to happen to, "Graphics" in two generations (Since PS2 / Xbox). It adds a level of immersion that better and better processors can't. Graphics @ this point are nearly photo realistic... so what more can be done? 3D changes that... and the 3DS is brilliant in my opinion. I'd recommend checking out Shadow Wars, PilotWings, MarioKart7, Kid Icarus, Zelda OoT just to name a few to show what the 3DS can do.

So Nintendo is going to release a new DS iteration every 2 years? Reminds me of EA and it's sports franchises. Aren't you Nintendo fanboys sick of Nintendo not sticking with ONE handheld? Or are you sick of the fact that Nintendo can't seem to put dual analog controls on their handhelds? I am really questioning Nintendo's brain trust.
