New Grand Theft Auto V screens as Rockstar apologizes for long dev cycles

Studio says extended development process done to ensure quality, offer "fresh and exciting" advancements; new screenshots of Grand Theft Auto V released.
Fans of Rockstar Games properties like Grand Theft Auto and Max Payne have had to wait many years between installments, and some are bothered by this gap. As part of a new Asked & Answered feature posted to the company's website, Rockstar apologized for its lengthy development cycles, and ensured fans that the studio spends its time focusing on quality.
"We are sorry that it sometimes seems to take a long time, but the massive amount of work it takes to imagine, design, build, and populate a digital world is simply staggering, and we are constantly striving to make sure each game surpasses the last one," reads a line from the statement. "We try to work as fast as possible, but given the combinations of cutting edge technology, high resolution graphics and animation, and hundreds of thousands of sound files, all of which have to work perfectly, and be fun and enjoyable to play, it is not surprising the games take a while to make."
"Even with sequels to existing games, it is important to us that they have a lot of new elements and feel fresh and exciting," the message continues. "We feel it is our duty to make sure the games are as good as we can make them and as innovative as we can make them."
Elsewhere in the update, Rockstar spoke about Grand Theft Auto V. The company confirmed that the upcoming open-world action game will not have any kind of beta, and warned users that any solicitation purportedly offering access to a GTAV beta could be a "dodgy online phishing scam."
While Rockstar did not offer any new information regarding GTAV, the company said gamers can expect new information and assets from the game "soon." Additionally, the firm released two new images from the game, the first of which (embedded above) shows off a police helicopter high above the Los Santos setting. The second image (at right) depicts two individuals sitting on a waterside dock, dipping their feet in the water.
As for why Rockstar has remained largely silent on GTAV since announcing the project in October, the firm said it doesn't want to spoil the game prerelease, and it is simply not ready to show more.
"We want to keep plenty back for the actual game release so there are still lots of surprises when you play it," the statement reads. "The only things we care about are that you enjoy the experience of actually playing the game and that we release accurate information. We just have not been in a position to show more of the game than the trailer and will not be for a while yet."
Lastly, Rockstar addressed the future of the Red Dead Redemption franchise, saying news about a sequel to 2010's much-praised open-world Western is forthcoming.
"We don't always rush to make sequels, but that does not mean that we won’t get to them eventually," the statement reads. "Stay tuned for further announcements about the future of the Red Dead series."

Quality first, I agree Rockstar. They've never failed us & it seems they're taking whatever extra time needed to keep it that way. Nice!
I'm afraid that the game map will be only in Los Santos, in San Andreas we had four different areas, simulating the countryside and Cassinos too...
@DurdenBR Ahh yes, the incredibly huge map of GTA San Andreas is certainly something I would like to see in GTA V. For me, it's one of many aspects that keeps me playing San Andreas to this date!
On one hand, if the map becomes smaller as in to only represent Los Santos, then yes, some of the game's replayability factor gets lost. Besides, huge maps are almost always better.
On the other hand, a huge map is prone to have more bugs and glitches than a small one and have reduced quality. If they're just making Los Santos and that took all this time, imagine if they were making the whole 4 different areas... If they are making those areas, hooray!
I prefer the map size and diversity from GTA San Andreas, this is just the bottom right corner so not too excited :|.
2 Like I don't mind delays or a longer than normal span between games- as long as it is done right. Rockstar has never done me wrong and if it takes longer to put out a masterpiece, then so be it.
This is the kind of tittle I don't mind waiting for. Only as long as the game is worth it.

@LonelyHippie27 RDR was allready a sequel. The first game was a PS2 game called Red Dead Revolver, then Red Dead Redemption. It will probably be an entire different game, different character and idk about different setting. I dont know how many western worlds they can do.
How could you possibly be "surprised" by the fact Rockstar will make a new RDR sequel with it being just about the greatest video game ever created? lol When a company makes $75,000,000 on a video game, chances are they will attempt to duplicate that feat.

1 Like Take as long as you need Rockstar, as GTA has been lackluster lately compared to Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire. How many game developers actually do this nowadays anyway? Not many.
@csward dont understand what you mean that GTA is lackluster lately. The last GTA game that came out was GTA IV and that came out 2 years before Red Dead and 3 years before LA Noire, so of course those 2 games are going to be better quality considering theres years between them. If you're saying that GTA V is lackluster, I just don't have any idea what so ever on how you can judge a game with 1 trailer and 2 screen shots with one of the makers of the game saying its not even close to being done yet. For all we know this came might not be our for another 2 years so please explain how you can judge a game when its not even close to being done? Or are you just one of those whiney pain in the ass skeptic gamers?
Red Dead Redemption is the greatest game ever created. L.A. Noire looked really good but was pointless. No fun.

You are one of the few developers that I can hear about your game coming out and already know that I am going to get it without seeing anything. You are want the industry needs to be like in terms of delivering an pleasant experience with your games. Keep it up!

1 Like the reason why no fan of rockstar can complain on taking to long is because they always come out with great games ... so i'd rather have a game that is worth the wait than the unfinished and disappointing rushed releases
The trailer was running on a console because it had bad shadows and it only went up to 720p and you could easily tell it was console graphics
The setting looks very modern. Nothing to complain there, though I did have lots of fun with VC and SA (the 80s and 90s).
If those are actual gameplay screenshots, I'd say it looks like a PC release (plus consoles, of course). Reason being, even on low-medium setting, GTA 4 looks better on PC than it did on consoles, that is to say, consoles hardware probably cannot produce such images on the fly. For those that are going "get off, you PC fanboy!", I have a ps3 and a gaming PC. I love my ps3 but I cannot deny its limitations.
@banana23man No offense bro but then you are obviously giving the PS3 little credit. Have you seen how The Last Of Us looks like? The graphics on the PS3 are OUTSTANDING and it is a PS3 exclusive. So you won't be seeing it on the PC.

Graphics look amazing! Take all the time you need as long as its like how San Andreas was maybe even better! (GTA4 was poop in comparison in terms of gameplay)
GTA Series should have been a playstation exclusive franchise but i guess its important for sony to have competition from microsoft anyway GTAV will be way better than thecrappy GTAIV, I dont really really promote crime but you have release the vandal inside somehow.
Rockstar has not given us any other information about GTA V except for the two mysterious images of the game. Really? Are they suggesting somethin in those pictures? I've been waiting forever for this game and now only two screenshots are provided. Nice job teasing us further Rockstar. Well, since pictures are all we have, I think we can spin a lot of thoughts around them while we wait for the hard facts to come. One thing that come to my attention after a bit of analyzing the photos was that the graphics are all that great as expected. There were rumors that GTA V will debut on an Xbox 720 or the next generation PlayStation console. I don't think the pictures reveals other telling signs that GTA V will run on Xbox 360 and PS3 only. At 720p, the pictures look basically the same for pictures running in current generation of Xboxes and PS3s. Even to an untrained eye like mine, there is an obvious similarity. Considering that the new Xbox 720 and PS4 will be out sometime during the last quarter of 2013, GTA V will definitely be released on 360s and PS3s rather than the new gen consoles. It's illogical that this terrific game will roll out for 720s and PS4s next year. Even so, I think the game will run fine and will still be enjoyable in the least even if it runs on old Xbox 360 hardware. Hopefully rockstar will show us more details about this game during the next Gamescom this year. @nick280455 Who and when would you be playing exactly? Without posting spoilers, the story has come to a pretty firm ending, at least with the Martson's.
I just hope they do a proper job with the map of San Andreas this time. Driving around through those massive rural roads to get to the objectives to me was.....boring.
definitely going to be building myself a pc for this game for the better graphics and mods. oh and for skyrim :D
1 Like ive seen a few still pics of this game and i have to say the game looks amazing. should be interesting to see how they pull it off without much technical issues on the 360 version and its dvd format.
1 Like @KimCheeWarriorX I am tired of these comparisons. Blu-ray is not needed for current gen games. The only games that utilized the capacity did so because they had long high-def pre-rendered cutscenes (Metal Gear anyone???). These pre-rendered cutscenes look good, but they make poor use of space on the medium; however, there aren't typically any fully rendered cutscenes in GTA games. They typically use the graphics engine for short real-time cutscenes. There will be plenty of space left over on a DVD. Remember that Skyrim was on 1 DVD and the install only used 3.8GB (the 360 supports 8.5GB DL DVDs). That means Skyrim could fit on a DVD almost 2 1/4 times over.
3 Like I would prefer them to take a long time with their games to ensure stunning quality as opposed to taking a short amount of time to release it and then patch it to death when they realise it's broken. Keep on it Rockstar, as long as it takes, I will be buying GTA V on release day and I don't mind waiting a long time for it to come out as long as it's almost-perfect on release.

@brgreen I never played the series either, but when GTA IV came out and I saw that so many websites were giving it a perfect 10/10 score, I decided maybe I need to give it a look. I enjoyed the hell out of it, still need to go back and finish it though. I'll definitely be picking up GTA V. Open world games rule.

Having the freedom to do whatever you want in a huge city is so much fun. But everybody is different and i wont have a go at you for being different. Hopefully you enjoy this one when it comes out :)
