More industry chatter indicates Microsoft will offer first word on the Xbox 360's successor during next year's gaming event.
Source: Tech blog BGR.
What we heard: Not a week after the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo concluded, the rumor mill began to churn on next year's show. Namely, VideoGamer.com reported that it had heard from a senior Crytek development source that the German studio would unveil a new installment in the Timesplitters franchise alongside Microsoft's next Xbox at E3 2012.
Crytek has since distanced itself from those rumors, but a new report indicates that Microsoft does indeed plan to debut the Xbox 360's successor next June. BGR reports today that it has received word from a source with knowledge of Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division that the company will unveil the next Xbox at E3 2012.
Unfortunately, BGR's source had no other information on Microsoft's plans, including when the device will launch. However, the individual did tell the tech site that Microsoft has been working on the device since 2006. Microsoft launched the Xbox 360 in November 2005, and it has gone on to sell nearly 55 million units worldwide.
While Microsoft has been tight lipped on the next Xbox through official channels, it has at least indicated through other means that a new device is in the works. Earlier this year, the publisher posted a spate of job listings to fill out a team "responsible for defining and delivering next generation console architectures from conception through implementation."
The official story: Microsoft had not responded to a request for comment as of press time.
Bogus or not bogus: Microsoft isn't likely to offer any word on its next Xbox until it is good and ready. However, given the growing body of rumors, an E3 2012 reveal is looking increasingly likely.
Wish lists: x360 controller is the main gripe i had with that system. It starts feeling uncomfortable compared to the PS3 controller, for titles that use the thumb pad rather than the analog stick a lot after a few hours). I sure hope they improve on that. Wii U: online stunk on wii. It was so hard to find other players, so hard to maintain connections. They really are light years behind in the online area. PS3: online system was not as good as Xbox Live. System was too hard to program for, so there were fewer online titles and downloadable content.
with the next gen of consoles i am going to wait. why? with the Wii U, we don't know how it'll stack up against the competition. Although it is an eventual must for me given nintendo's 1st party titles, i probably won't want to shovel out the launch price for it. i'll wind up waiting a few years until the price is reduced and there is a bevy of great games for me to get. look at the wii now...the best wii game (skyward sword) finally comes out 5 years later when the system is basically dirt cheap for a console this gen. With the 360...my first 360 was stolen from me...ok, not microsoft's fault...but my second one got the RROD, even 2 and a half years after launch, and just a few weeks after i bought my second one they released the Elite, and i feel the limits of a 20gb harddrive now, lack of HDMI and inconvenience of a wired internet connection. Thing is, i'm sure the next xbox will have HDMI a massive hDD and other such wonderful things, but in a few years who knows where technology will go and they may release an "Elite" version of the next gen xbox, my point is i've learned with these systems to be patient, a few years patient. All the same can be said with the ps3 too. So i'm going to wait, thank you.
still hoping for the 2012 date...halo 4 set to release that christmas...would like to see the new trilogy launched on the new platform...it would make them make sure to do it right...no al bs *rage*
may be they ll reveal it in 2012 but i think the launch is going to be in 2013 there are some games to be played you know ......or i am wrong and the xbox 360 would be dead by the of 2012 :( anyways the first models that are released always have some trouble at first '' PS3 early time and the Xbox as well RROD'' so i am gona wait like untill the end of 2013 to buy the new console if you ask me .....gives me the time to play some of the Xbox games that i ven't lol and also the Ps3 :P
everyone here is commenting about not buying a new console and sticking to the 360. what are you going to if microsoft cuts live support and the production of games and systems? your going to buy a new console. and this wont be the first time it happens.
As long as it is backwards compatible I am ok with it. I only went from PS2 to 360 because I missed the backwards compatible models of the PS3. There was rage to be had over that.
i agree dont be too greedy the 360 is doing so so well and i think a year wont be enought to get the full potential of the 360-i mean i get an upgrade but a complete new model will me dumb- what about all the money ive spent on 360 games- what they expect me to start all over again? dont think so
Too Early, why release another model when the current one is doing just fine compared to the PS3 and Wii? People are buying more Xboxs than PS3 and Wii in general. Wouldn't suck to buy Xbox 360 this year and find out during the summer than another upgraded and better Xbox is made. Apple does that all the time with thier ipod and iphone but it works....can we say the same with the xbox?
@Ultra_Taco I agree. I think 2012 or 2013 MS will announce a new console. The games coming out October and November, show what developers are able to get out of the current gen. Look at id and RAGE...60 fps, while other games are still doing 30. This console gen is already at 6 years...and we can't forget about Far Cry 3, Witcher 2 and all the other games coming out early next year that are pushing the console. Only demise of 360 is lack of disk space...needs to be remedied.
This is way too soon to change console's. There are so many cool games coming out. Plus I just got a 360 S after my xbox died 2 months ago.
This is good news. Consoles should last 5 or 6 years. One look at BF3 on a good PC and you will see what were missing. Too many advancements in technology happen in 5 years, look at phones from now and 5 years ago.
Too early for a new console to come out, some great games are just starting to come out for it: - Skyrim - Rage - MW 3 - BF 3
meh...it`s too early for this, there`s alot ov 10/10s games comming out at the end ov this year on 360 and the PS3 i don`t need a new console !!
Hmmmm.. it troubles me to think about a new console when the economy is really in bad shape right now.
@punksterdaddy There's plenty of other things one can do with an original Xbox. Hacking into it and turning it into a media center, a Linux computer or installing emulators to play old-school games. The possibilites are many... :)
@ ozspark . . . . . Sony's problem with PS3 was NOT that it was a year late, but that the games were not better and it cost too much. The Bluray was too slow 2X so the disk read speed caused load times . . . . . . . . . . - _ - . . . . - _ - . . - _ - Had Sony WAITED LONGER the cell chip would have been better all 8 working spu's and not 7, higher clock speed 4.2 to 5.2 Ghz and not as expensive because it would not have needed water cooling, and bluray parts would have been cheaper and at 4X no load times.
@OriginalXboxGmr I hear you on that points... I wish your conditions were more realistic and likely to happen? I am currently on my third 360 since Feb 2008 and although I have never seen this RRoD on any of my consoles, my 1st two never lasted much more than a year! I may join you with yer original xbox idea because I too, have never once had any major problems with it? Still though, I would miss out on all new releases etc. so I'll have to wait and see first!? Good idea, just wish it was do-able?
I will only buy the next-gen Xbox on these conditions: 1) fault-free hardware with no more RROD, 2) affordability and 3) the ability to play with others online for free. Fat chance any of these things will happen, so at the risk of sounding like a total loser, I'm gonna invest plenty of my free time playing my original Xbox. It may be way past outdated and no longer supported, but out of all the game consoles I've ever owned, my Xbox has never given me any problems in the 8 1/2 years I've had it. Can't say that about the 360.
Personally, I hope Sony and MS wait until at least 2013 to launch the new consoles, and they will need to be pretty impressive to get folks to move to them - right now I think both are awesome and have a hard time thinking of how the games could be better looking or sounding.
The next Xbox would need to do something outrageously awesome for me to buy it. As long as games are being made, I am completely satisfied with the 360. As far as Sony is concerned, it looks like they are hoping the PS3 can compete with the new Xbox for a while.
Maybe Sony should release the PS4 alongside the Xbox 3, if not, maybe a couple of months after it. They need to learn from the mistakes that they made from releasing the PS3 too late after the market was already dominated by the 360 and Wii. This time round, they'll have it harder considering WIi U's graphics and power.
Lets just hope this is another rumor and that's it. The big 3 really need to look at the big economy picture. Can folks really support next gen while current gen are doing just fine...
All they need to do is Announce it next year, they don't have to release it to do damage to Nintendo's WiiU. People will see the new 720 or what have you, and decide to wait for a true next generation purchase rather than buy another console that can play games your console already can.
If Microsoft pushes out a new console, it's because of one thing, and one thing only.. the WiiU. Microsoft sees that the WiiU will have an immediate advantage over both themselves and Sony, due to only the graphical capabilities the WiiU will bring and how mediocre it will most likely make both the X360 and PS3 look. They figure if they release a console either soon after, or maybe alongside the WiiU, people will go to Microsoft due to most people being satisfied with the X360, not knowing just how well the WiiU is going to hold up to it's 'hardcore gamer'.. and really, no one knows either way. I suppose we'll see. I can't lie though, were a new Xbox to drop in the next few years, I would probably end up getting it. But like others have said, Xbox 360 has guaranteed support until at least 2015, so there will still be games made for it.. Besides, they're not going to come out with the Kinect (which they push as another console entirely) and then just forget about it. X360 will be around for a while regardless, so don't worry.
I had a problem with the new xbox 360 slim the one without the harddrive and just the flash memory. Couldn't play halo reach or fable 3 with it. It kept freezing my game on fable 2. Had to send it back. I got the new 250 gig one ...it works great no problems.
@mariokart64fan: Sorry you had so many problems with your 360's. I only had 1 RROD on me and when I got it back I noticed there were some cooling fans in it and I have not had any problems since. Microsoft just needs to find a better company than IBM to make their CPU's. I wish they would use Intel instead. Also I was dissapointed with Nintendo after the Gamecube but I really do hate the new Wii name, and the controller.
@beans9222: Money, money, money... it's what makes the world spin. Let's hope they keep the controller design though - why change the perfect? No comments on whether X360 or PS3 controller is better, but Sony did the right thing keeping the working concept.
Just because the next Xbox is coming out does not mean that Xbox 360 will not have games. Xbox 360 will have many of the same games like PS2 and PS3 had when PS3 launched. Just better looking games with some slight differences. as Developers are able to open up the new Xbox it will be a lot better. There will be some exclusives to the new Xbox but still IT IS COMING. -_- . . . . -_- . . . - _ - Really it seams every Generation there is a small group of people who hold on to the past. NO not games in 3D, 2D is the best... NO not HD NO not MP, I like single player.... NO not SOMETHING NEW!! Get over it the third Xbox will be out soon, it will not destroy your enjoyment of games there are plenty of games out now. More than you have time to play.
I hope that a reveal in 2012 still will mean it won't be out for awhile. I'm definitely not ready to drop another 300-400 dollars on a new console when the 360 is still kickin.
wye dont they just stick to the 360 for like 10 more years? after all we payed like 200-300$ for it...
Well I for one hope that MS learned their lesson with the RROD disaster and it doesn't become another exclusive feature with their next system..
lead that was one pathetic excuse , , but oh well i will not buy the next xbox period and it will not come out in 2012 lol , it would have already been announced if it were if it comes out 2012 no body gonna buy somthing that they know nothing about , go get your pipe dreams worked on cause seriously they wont come out with new consoles til 2013-2015 and you can bet they wont be that much more powerful then wii u at all if they are good luck paying 700-800 freakin dollars with the way the market is no jobs no nothing , nobodys going to spend 700 on a 720 which is more then likely to rrod or have similar problems guess yall forgot how original xbox also had the problems lol i went though 4 thought ms learned its lesson nope, still rrods-9 360s ripped so far and ill stick with nintendo and sony ,they have done flawlessly , reliable hardware games i actually like , unlike 360 which is nothing but halo gears forza halo gears forza halo gears forza ya i guess that pattern hasnt worn out yet cause thats excactly your xmas line up lol gears halo forza then they kick 2012 off with halo 4 ya ,, nice variety-not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If it comes out in 2012 that would be great because the current 360 will have had an 8 year run which was better than the 1st xbox. I just hope this new one will have lots more ram(4gb minimum). The 360 only had 512mb with those 2 powerful cpu's. I will stick with MS especially after I heard Nintendo's new console is called: Wii U. The tablet controller looks terrible too.
Ugh. Not sure I want this quite so soon. Was really hoping MS would stay true to the rumored 10-year console lifecycle this gen.
@FlaMezV2 Yeah I probably should have explained it a bit better.. I meant kinect in general, not necessarily the current kit itself. I'd imagine they could make a few tweaks here and there. Then again.. Who's to say they'll even release a kinect 2 as such? As you say it will probably just be built in cameras on the next model. I'm not going to pretend I know anything about specs because I don't, but my guess is the console will just come ready built as such. Saying that though I haven't got a clue.. And actually now I'm thinking about it none of what I'm saying is even making sense :/ Yeah lets just leave it as 5x better :P
@FlaMezV2 It would use the same Kinect camera there is nothing wrong with the Kinect. Only that the 360 lacks the processing power to pull it off, as it should.
@Madgnad No, no problems your opinion thing is the cell is a single core processor. With 7 SPE's one is redundent & one runs the OS so there are only six. That work in a archaic version Hyperthreading, you know that the cell is a shelived IBM processor? The same the 360's Zenon, they were/are cheap multithread processors. The cards you point out in both the 360 & PS3, the PS3 one is based on a GTX 6800. With some enhancements, the 360 one is a X1800 with some DX10 card features. Nither cards were top of the line at launch. My guess for a for a nextgen console card something based off a mid range HD 5000 or GTX400.
@warhawk-geeby Mate I agree with you in everything you just said apart from them fusing it with the next Xbox. Yes it will be old, but did it ever occur to you that they would come out with a Kinect 2 or even a 3, as technology gets better. Incorporating the Kinect into the new Xbox would limit the amount of sales any modernized version of the Kinect could make due to people being "happy with what they have" and not feeling they need the upgrade. I reckon the new Xbox will have a camera, bluetooth (or some other way to encourage the Windows phone purchase when you have an Xbox) probably directx 12 (as mentioned earlier) and a high level of RAM and Graphic capability. Probably with Nvidia 3D vision potential so they can sell 3D glasses as part of it. then Blue-ray and wireless (because the prices for those assets would have shrunk since PS3 attempted to use them) This is all speculation really. All i'm hoping is that it is at least 5x better than the current PS3 and Xbox 360 combined!
I honestly think that MS should just make a handheld. Because I have a feeling that they're going to rush into the next gen war too soon. And I think them having a handheld could balance things and maybe they won't rush a new console.
