Nintendo planning future platforms

President Satoru Iwata looking beyond Wii U and 3DS; company has begun developing tech that would simplify sharing assets between platforms.

Nintendo already has its eyes on what's next. A translation of prepared remarks from president Satoru Iwata today states Nintendo last year began work on technology for "future platforms" that would make software assets more transferable, regardless of the platform. According to Iwata, this would have multiple benefits, including avoiding software launch lineup shortages.

"Last year we also started a project to integrate the architecture for our future platforms. What we mean by integrating platforms is not integrating handhelds devices and home consoles to make only one machine. What we are aiming at is to integrate the architecture to form a common basis for software development so that we can make software assets more transferrable, and operating systems and their build-in applications more portable, regardless of form factor or performance of each platform," he said. "They will also work to avoid software lineup shortages or software development delays which tend to happen just after the launch of new hardware."

Iwata said that previously it was technologically impossible to have the same architecture for handheld and home consoles, but Nintendo's new technology could change this. Iwata's comments suggest games could be shared between a home console and a portable device, though the company is a long way away from implementing any such technology.

"Although it has not been long since we began to integrate the architecture and this will have no short-term result, we believe that it will provide a great benefit to our platform business in the long run," he said.

Nintendo's latest platform is the Wii U, which launched last year and has sold over 3 million units worldwide.

I don't get why so many people bring up the Wii U's hardware capabilities. Sure it isn't going to be as powerful as the next PlayStation or the next Xbox but do you know why? According to the source of all knowledge (Wikipedia), Out of Nintendo's top 25 sold games on the Wii, 23 of them were developed and published by Nintendo, the exceptions being (sigh) Just dance 1 & 2. In fact most of the best selling games on the Wii are Nintendo's own. Therefore wouldn't it be logical for Nintendo to design a console based on what their development teams would want?

The Wii U has the capacity for some 3rd party development since its a hell of a lot more capable then the Wii was in some major areas but seeing as Nintendo's own developers make most of the highly rated games on the Wii, why should Nintendo enter the 3rd party development warzone where console owners are always pushing for more for their own console to be ahead like when Assassin's Creed 4 was declared outright that the PlayStation version would have exclusive content. Somewhere along the line Sony had to spend time/money/effort negotiating that bonus for the PS version and now Ubisoft have to build said content (costing time/money/effort) just to keep 1 console developer happy. How is this fair for the developers to have to come up with extra content, that doesn't mess with the lore or main story, which will only be accessible to a specific section of the market? Isn't building an entire game enough?

I'm happier knowing that Nintendo make their games complete and 100% designed for their console.(Ok, they are doing DLC's now but the first major DLC they have put forward, the Year of Luigi one, is pretty much the equivalent of a new Mario performer in terms of the number of new levels).

You might claim that 3rd developers want the powerhouse consoles to make their games on and no one can really deny that but in all honesty if you spend the time paying attention to the graphical differences or the frames per second of a game then stop wasting your time on consoles and get a machine that can put the performance of all consoles, including the PS4 and the 720 (when its specs get declared) and just get a proper gaming PC. Yep its expensive as hell in comparison (the one I'm currently wishing I could upgrade to is just over my monthy wage by itself...) but your pretty much a PC elitist already if graphics and fps matter to you that much.

I'll most likely continue to patronize Nintendo, so far they have not failed me and as it stands right now they are the only option since XBox is NEVER an option, unless you are a complete idiot.

A bit off Topic;  Will some knowledgeable  gamer tell me what software is these new system is going to have in the first year on the market that this past gen can't handle... I think NONE, because to fool unwise gamers into thinking these new games can't be run on other system they'll just choose the brute force method of it and hide flaw with decent graphics and most un-wise gamer is going to go giddy that OH the Wii U or old systems couldn't do that...

make a tech similar to NFC "Near field Communication" but allow it to transfer larger files faster and have maybe double the range..

I hope they're planning to release something that DOESNT  suck! :) Wii U is wack! http://youtu.be/5_Fc9yLJ25U Sorry nintendo is loosing it. The proof is in the song!

@AllyG At least Nintendo still has their pride, unlike EA, Sony, and other companies that actually show they believe their games suck based their anti-used game practices such as the online pass (and maybe the used game block in the future.) That's why I have more respect for Nintendo over Sony.

@Jinzo_111887 @AllyG So, all games that have Online Passes suck just because they have Online Passes? I don't like Online Passes too. But come on, man. All games that have online passes?

Jesus, Nintendos support of consoles is getting shorter and shorter. The gamecube was pretty much dead on arrival. The wii stopped getting any worthwhile games 2 or 3 years ago. And the Wii U is out a few months  and this annoucement. I can only assume Nintendo's next console is inferior to the PS4 and xbox 720 and launched during the generation of the ps5 and xbox 1440.

@kiramasaki Who is your avatar supposed to be?

Oh, probably just an enhancement for the Wii U...

Perhaps, something that can enable you to take your gamepad out on the fly, and have cross street pass play with Wii U gamepads and the 3ds.

Nintendo are smoking some serious stuff over there. They don't even live on earth anymore. So full of themselves. They need a stiff dose of reality. Everything they have done since the first Wii came out has been one long pile of garbage. Hence why most Wii's have 2 inches of dust on them.

@DarthLod They didn't live on earth when Mario 1-3 were made for NES.

Seriously, smiling clouds in Nintendo games, Star powered invincibility?

Though, I always wanted to skateboard on a turtle shell..

Impossible? That's funny because it looks like Sony did it just fine with the Vita and PS3. That being said, I'm interested in where they want to take this.

Sounds like what Sony's doing with the PS Vita.

Auronvolgar

@Tsuchikage a little bit different, they don't want the OS be capable to share Game between two different OS, but have the same OS. Like Microsoft did with Windows 8

@Auronvolgar Certainly different, but also similar (at least in concept).  I wasn't trying to say that Nintendo is ripping off Sony by any stretch.

Planning and actually developing are two different things. Do you honestly think these ideas pop out of no where? The Wii U was in development since 2010, they started planning for the system as early as 2007/08.

@abHS4L88 @xeoneex66 We both know Nintendo begins planning their next gen consoles when a console/handheld is released.

This story isn't new, Nintendo always does this.

A person always has to be thinking ahead even after they release something. There are no times for long breaks, the work continues. While I do not agree with posting something like this in the public this early, there is nothing to worry about. The Wii U will be here long enough for us to play it.

I think what Iwata is hinting at is having future platforms more operating system oriented similar to Apple hardware. That way they could release new hardware more often and all of your stuff just transfers over. Like how you can buy a new iphone every year and all of the previous apps and media work on the new device.

The WiiU is looking at a 3 year life span. Nintendo wasted the first year so far. During the second year, MS and Sony are going to establish their systems. And then destroy Nintendo the following year N0. 3. All because Nintendo does everything on the cheap. They don't have the casual this time around to bail them.

96augment

@xcollector Nintendo destroyed in a year? Like Last gen? When the Wii was cheaper than the PS3 and Xbox 360?

Innocent_baby
Innocent_baby like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@xcollectorI kinda like how this will be like the 5th or 6th time Nintendo would be destroyed. I just wish they would learn to stay dead and they can't possibly get themselves out of the fiscal hole their console has dug them into last generation....oh wait! that was Sony. Seriously though, who flipping cares what sys is best. Only a fool wants Nintendo or any other console dead. More competitors means more COMPETITION which means lower prices for US! Heck, WSJ even reported on how Sony learned very hard that they can't just price the console as they saw fit due to how Nintendo bested them in console sales with a lower priced alternative. Which means that even though some fools can't stand Ninty. They have a hand in ensuring Sony lovers get a better priced PS4 to enjoy. Oh capitalism, you rascal you!

speedracer3190

@xcollector Nintendo can survive on its Ninfans alone, so no worries.

@xcollector

Just like the Gamecube and XBox destroyed the PS2? Honestly, where do you people get this idea that Microsoft and Sony will easily destroy Nintendo? There's a reason why Nintendo has remained while the other major 1st parties like Atari and SEGA have left the hardware business, because they're an extremely talented and very clever company.

Very odd for a hardware manufacturer to even speak of a successor when their console just shipped. Sounds like Nintendo might be admitting the Wii U is a failure.

@SavoyPrime You do realize that all hardware companies start working on their next console as soon as the current one is done, right? This was taken from a statement for a "Corporate management Policies Briefing," not a statement aimed at fans.
