Nintendo: third-party games look 'dramatically better' on Wii U

Reggie Fils-Aime says side-by-side comparison reveals Call of Duty and others look better on Nintendo's new console than Xbox 360, PS3.
Third-party games like Call of Duty: Black Ops II look better on Wii U than they do on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. That's according to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, who told CNN recently that players seeking the best-looking experience would be smart to choose the Wii U version. Responding to a question regarding the Wii U being on par in terms of specifications with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Fils-Aime said this was not the case.
"First off, I have to correct you. The specs are quite different than the competitive systems; much more graphically intensive. If you do a side-by-side comparison you would actually see that third-party like Call of Duty look dramatically better on our system," Fils-Aime said.
Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford said earlier this year that the Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines would be the best-looking iteration of the game. The title is also planned for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
Fils-Aime was also asked how Nintendo feels about launching the Wii U just a year before Microsoft and Sony are rumored to have new, more capable systems on the market. Ultimately, he said the Wii U's second-screen approach is the "next innovation" and early sales of the system in the Americas are proving this point.
"And then, in terms of what competition is going to do in the future, we'll see," Fils-Aime said. "We know that, based on our development, this two-screen gaming experience really is the next innovation that consumers are gravitating to; it's selling extremely well here in the Americas, already stocks are quite low in the marketplace. And so for us, certainly the consumer is deciding that the innovation is well worth their investment."

I think he forgot to mention that the framerate is much worse on all of the Wii U versions...
Like Reggie recently said: faster processors and pretty pictures won't be enough. Thanks Reggie, for letting me know that it's better to play Black Ops 2 in Xbox Live or PSN.
Ok, maybe he's right, but I don't think many of the people in the Wii U's market will play CoD or care so much about the graphics.

This is by far the dumbest statement I've ever heard in a while. I usually don't get involved in the whole Nintendo vs the other consoles argument here but I'll make one notable exception in this case.
If the Wii U doesn't have better graphics than a 7 year old system then something is most definitely wrong with your system. You're comparing a 1 month old system versus a 7 year old system. What's actually depressing about the Wii U is the fact that the graphics aren't leaps and bounds better than the PS3/Xbox360.
Also, I don't understand why Nintendo is trying to go head to head with Microsoft and Sony, a battle which it will surely lose. The reason why Nintendo has stayed relevant all these years despite Sony and Microsoft having better capabilities is because Nintendo carved out a nice niche in the market where people played games because they are really fun. Not because they had the greatest graphics our anything like that. But because they are fun to play. The minute you try to take on the PS3/Xbox360 by trying to appeal to a broader audience and start ignoring your fan base is the minute you'll most defintely become irrelevant.
We looked at cOD bo II on a xbox 360 slim and a wii u, using a spectre 1080p 24" 2ms LED monitor- not side by sdie but one at a time. Neither one of us could tell any difference in graphics, response, sound, or control.

Early sales are proving what? The X360 sold almost twice as many as the WiiU last week. And well yes, I do hope that the games on WiiU looks better than the X360/PS3 versions, it is your next gen console... How stupied can you be?
Now stop to "try" (this is not even trying) to beat MS and Sony in graphics, you are just being silly, and give me some good Mario Kart or something that is actually good.
They got COD but why would anyone play that on the WiiU over a Console or PC? Also it's already out so a lot of people already have it.
1 Like @AyatollaofRnR If you care about framerate then you wouldn't even consider gaming on consoles in the first place. Most games on consoles run below 30FPS, PC is the only way to go if you want smooth framerates.
@Mark_HD We aren't talking 30 vs 60 frames we are talking sub 30 fps for some of the WiiU ports. I'm happy with a solid 30 fps.
1 Like @Mark_HD @AyatollaofRnR fan boy alert! True pc games will always have the edge on consoles, but at least PS an Xbox frame rates are generally stable. After playing CoD an batman on the WiiU you can defiantly notice significant frame rate drops when there is a lot happening on screen.

1 Like Fuck the CPU. I had a Pentium 4 till last year, Battlefield 3 max settings max AA. CPU doesnt mean as much as the GPU. (I know that the Pentium 4 was the most powerfull CPU in the world)Now you guys can't really do justice to the wii-u unless you see exclusives. ZombieU looks great. And you must know the game is rendering at 1080p (not 720p like xbox and ps3 games of this last years) and in 2 Screens.About the gameplay, I'm a PC gamer and I like the Wii because of it's experience, I can have all of the PS3/xbox360 experience on my pc, not the wii. And I like that. It's kinda the same feeling to play on an arcade house :D
@Gle4se ROFL. Stop lying. I have an AMD Phenom X4 @ 3.4 ghz and I have to play at high settings with my current setup. Also at the time, the P4s were second-rate to AMD CPUs. (Clock speed means nothing if they can't handle the tasks thrown at them.)

1 Like lol....even though those games are just port from 360/ps3, it may look better by a *margin* but the frame rate on the wii u drops soo low that you will start to notice lag. GG nintendo
1 Like @ciaxhieu That's not true. I have no lag problems with any games at all. None. And graphically, the differences that I noticed (in COD anyway) were that the textures and details are much cleaner and sharper on the WII U. You can tell the PS3 version has a bit more frame-rate, but it's not nearly a towering difference. The graphic differences are far more noticeable between the two consoles than the frame-rate.
@Micropixel @ciaxhieu I have CoD on both the 360 and the WiiU and I prefer the WiiU version to the 360 version any day of the week. Haven't really noticed the framerate issues that I've heard so many complaints about, but I do like the fact that I can play the game, in all modes, anywhere in my house... I can't do that on my 360. Not saying the console is better, it's just my preference at the moment. Would like to see what a Dishonored port would look and play like on the WiiU, but I don't see that happening any time soon..This is a new system, please don't expect devs to be running this thing to it's full potential right out of the gate... even the 360 and PS3 had launch game framerate issues and graphical faux pas! Play games for fun, not to bicker with anyone else on the interwebs about who's console is better!

Easy, the GPU pipeline architecture hasn't dramatically changed like it did in 2005. People who don't know graphics and assume Sony and Microsoft will repeat what they've done back then, know nothing about graphics.
It only shows how uninformed and hopeful they are. I'm getting more and more disappointed by what people assume on here.
It'd be nice for game websites to keep users updated in Nvidia and ATI progress.

1 Like launch week sales do not measure the success or get to have the title "the next innovation", as if thats what people really want! WiiU might turn out to be a fun distraction, a secondary option to break things up, much like te original Wii, Im just not confident the masses are going to jump on board this time around.

All I can say is till we see a comparative sheet with all specs for the WiiU, PS30 and 360 we will not know which is more powerful (which I am surprised we havent seen yet). Even after we do there will still be PS3 and 360 fanboys that will bash Nintendo even after it is proved to be better. Also for the argument over PC being better and Wii U low CPU power, last time I checked even the most intense PC games don't require more than a Quad core processor which is shared between everything else running on a PC and I have researched the fact that when it comes to playing games GPU is more important than having a better CPU. The biggest point of all, these games you are comparing are ports, the only thing that will be better than PS3 and 360 will be minor details and lighting. Lets wait for Bayonetta 2 and have a better I dea of what a game that was made for the Wii U looks like. Either way fun factor is more important than graphics, I'd like to think games like minecraft and angry birds has proved that a long time ago.

3 Like @dreamfist11 The Zelda real time tech demo they showed a while ago looks better than anything on PS3/360, The Wii U is definitely more powerful overall, much more powerful GPU and more RAM but weaker CPU, the launch games are simply quick ports of games that are optimized for PS3/360, eventually we will see more and more games with better graphics than what is possible on the older consoles. Launch games on 360 looked like upscaled original Xbox games...

You can research the type of RAM and see if this guy is right but so far, I don't know of anyone that has disputed his claim and I would imagine that if he was wrong someone that knows different would have corrected him by now.
At the end of the day, Nintendo have refused to give their customers detailed specifications since the Wii, so to get to the info we may want to know about Nintendo hardware, we need to use other means, like teardowns and such.

I should just stop talking and wait until Sony and Microsoft debutes their consoles. You will witness how amazing both Wii U and PS4/720 titles will look.
Also, the fact that you guys base a console off shitty ports is hilarious. Imagine if someone thought my 1080p PC was garbage because of the Dark Souls port, or Skyrim at launch, which actually played better on consoles.
Not just a weaker CPU but the RAM although being more abundant is about half the speed of the XBOX360/PS3 RAM.

Even if it were true (that the Wii U looked "better"), it wouldn't mean much anyhow. The games that matter are the ones that cannot be compared: Metroid, Zelda, SSB, F-Zero and so on...
I'm used to Nintendo consoles being less technically advanced - it makes me concentrate on which games are actually fun, not which games are best technically.

@hangman000 Sure. Mass Effect, Darsiders, Batman > WiiU versions graphic and performance are identical as X360/PS3 or in sometimes FPS is lower on WiiU... Basicly WiiU "power" is pretty much the same as X360/PS3 (or less ?). So when "X720" and "PS4" will launch WiiU will be again this weaker console for core users, with weaker graphic and performance and simpler games. Maybe that was what Nintendo wanted to be all alnong, since they sold more Wii than Microsoft and Sony their consoles. But all those talk from Nintendo about how WiiU is "dramatically better" and innovative is just silly.
@Akozz888 @hangman000 Ur saying ports are better sure. I have a massive PC and the games don't look better because they were meant to those consoles. When I play Crysis 1 I see that a game from wut, 2007? is better than most of the released ones of this year. Why? because they are a port, they were not designed to have more than those graphic options. Darksiders, Mass Effect 3 , CoD or even Batman look pretty much the same but with a better resolution. Batman has physx and DX11 which makes it look a bit better, that's it. And what botters me the most is the fact that there aren't pc exclusives that push the hardware but thats off topic.Now I want to see the power of the WII-U on exclusive games. Zombie U looks great.
