No Final Fantasy VII remake until Square Enix tops original

Jonathan Toyad
By Jonathan Toyad, Associate Editor

Square Enix CEO says RPG series would be done for if a remake were made now; company first needs to make a game that beats FFVII in terms of quality, sales.

Don't expect a Final Fantasy VII remake until Square Enix can make a new installment in the role-playing game franchise that tops the company's landmark original PlayStation effort.

In a Q&A session of Square Enix's annual shareholder's briefing, CEO Yoichi Wada said that a remake of Final Fantasy VII will happen once the company makes a new Final Fantasy title that succeeds the seventh game in terms of quality and sales, something the company has to date failed to do.

If Square Enix were to release a remake right now, Wada said that the series would be done for. He also said that staff members assigned to the supposed project would have to be fully committed to it if it were in the pipeline.

Final Fantasy VII was an immediate critical and commercial success upon its release; the game sold 10 million copies worldwide as of May 2010. The original is currently available for download on the PlayStation Network, and a Steam rerelease has been rumored.

forgot to mention the crapy ff 13. I mean what the hell was that, it doesn't even deserve the title final fantasy.

maybe you should start making good games again Square enix. Go back to the game style from Final Fantasy 1-9 And leave the linear path shit from 10 and 12. Even Though 10 was still good.

Give us a World map and classic round based battles where u actually control your characters. Entering a town on a map was so much nicer than selecting something from a menu.

Whether people love it or hate it, FF7 'is' the most 'popular' game in the series.  But, I believe, from what I've read over the years, that people don't just miss this particular 'game'.  They miss the 'game-design'.  The way the worlds were built from FF1-FF9.  I understand these people because, I feel the same way.  The games have gone from "Adventure/RPG" to "Action/Adventure with some RPG elements".  This isn't a "rant".  Just a simple observation.

They should do it before the hype is completly lost...

I don't think this will go away.  This subject has been around since about the year of 2000.  There were some 'talks' and some 'rumors' about a remake on the PS2.  Personally, my friends and I started talking about how cool it would be to have a remake of FF7 on the next Playstation system just after the release of FF Anthology on the PS1 in 1999.  FF7 is a big deal, whether some people like it or not.

I think this is really sad. If they really won't remake Final Fantasy 7 until they make a game that tops it, then I won't even hold my breath! None of the games have had the impact or been as fun as 7 since (although 9 was somewhat close (it was just too easy)). I find it a bit of a head scratcher that they think their Final Fantasy series would be abandoned after making a remake of 7. Although it hasn't been that great for a while the series is still pretty popular. BTW, I liked 3, 7, 9 and 12 in the main series. 10 was OK but I didn't play it a lot.

@darksongbird I loved the 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th a lot. Especially the 10th which I played too much (I had about 45k HP with my characters). You should play the 10th more ^_^

@senjutsu @darksongbird I just bought a PS2 again so that's a possiblity. However, I'm not gonna promise anything. I still wanna buy, replay and beat 9. I think I got stuck somewhere on the 3rd disc and didn't look through a FAQ long ago.

If Square Enix wants an FF game to beat FFVII, they'll need to leave what they thought was a good idea at their follow-ups. Bring back the world map, focus much less on the lenght and number of video's. (not saying forget about them) And last but not least, bring solid theme songs back to each and every character.

FFVII was perfect because it wasn't!
FFX+ ain't even close to FFVII because they try too hard to be perfect. (even 8 and 9 went stray)

It's pure psychological thinking. Players loved FFVII because each character, themesong and location made you  fill in the pieces by yourself, simply because nothing was perfect! It was actually closer to reading a book.
Even the character equipment and evolvement system was cute, fun and not perfect.

New age FF's don't leave anything to the imagination. A player wont starve and will grow bored before they even begin. No matter how good the story is.. No matter how good the graphics are.. The music.. The actors.. It's the wrong focus!

So, am i saying that it's too late to make a new FF game as popular as FFVII, or even better? The answer is; - "No! Not even by far!"  Gather some aspergers to solve one single riddle. "How can we make a players mind starve with todays sound, graphics and impatience?"

I could say, call me.. But who am i, and why would they.

If SquareEnix actually reads most comments on these sites they probably think that most of their ''fans'' are a collection of jackasses.

FFVII was a revolution in the gaming industry. Why? Because of its ability to engage the audience, to the very extent that the gamer cared about each person in his 'party' an to the very extent that every battle won, there was a huge feeling of accomplishment as though the battle were real. The soundtracks played a huge role in conveyance. For example each battle consisted of a fast tempo beat that pointed out the obvious (that you were in for a tough battle or escape.. If you could) Also i must say that listening to the soundtracks these days 10 years later from when I first played it, brings back those same feelings that I had for the characters then, oh incluing my childhood memories. Does any other game have this lasting effect? Ask yourself squareenix. Stop doing it for the money. Remake a FFVII because seriously when are you gonna stop? FFXXXXXXXXIIIIIIIIIIIVVVVV? Okay, that was silly. But do you see the point?.. Give the fans what they want. Im sure the majority would agree with a remake, just maybe change the whole graphics and fix 'bugs' aswell. That will be enough im sure. You have to end somewhere anyway. Nuff said.

Final Fantasy VII was a hit because the story worked beautifully and was created in a time when the console market was booming and the PSOne was popular.  XII was very, very close to the same fantasy story formula of VII, but was created when the ps2 was becoming obsolete graphically. A shame really.

Swallow your pride and just listen to the fans! XIII is pretty, but not Final Fantasy as we loved it. Stop remaking the formula every game and give us a classic Final Fantasy game with characters we care about!

The way they are going with the series, it's going to be really hard to top Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy XIII was, in my opinion, abysmal and I find XIII-2 and Lightning Returns to be highly unnecessary. Sure, there are people who loved the first two games and are looking forward to this third one and that's cool. But at least for me, if they keep making games in the series like XIII they won't get very far.

i downloaded the full actual gameplay of ff7 in seperate 2hour veiwings because is luvd it that much i could just relax and watch it all.. thing is, i only downloaded about 8hours of veiwing & have missed out on watching the rest because the website i got it from no longer has it!... anyone know wer i can dwnload the entire gameplay of ff7?

What he means by the series dying after they release it is that it might have all the FF players content, they'd probably sit there for hours and complete it multiple times and they make think "Well, I'm happy, not gonna bother buying any future Final Fantasys because they will never be as good". So it's sorta like the end game. However, all they have to do is try hard to follow the formula, perhaps even follow up with a 7-2? It will peak peoples interest again I believe, not kill the series.

SquareSoft  was good..... SquareEnix ? ... not soo much.

I have been really disappointed in the story line of the games after FF9 story-wise. You cant just make the game 3D with voice overs all of a sudden and rush the story lines. Id rather play 8BIT with a world renowned story line than have nice graphics and not understand nor feel what the main character or side characters are feeling.

Square Enix will never make more sales than FFVII in that series because they have more minds, more opinions, and Enix...... each contradicts the other and honestly .. you need the dev group that made FF7 to be there... than maybe you will get more sales.

Square Enix will squeeze the shit out of the buffalo on the indian head nickle before it releases a remake of FF7... as frustrating as it may sound.

Square realizes they have a time frame.. but that time is getting shorter and shorter as people change their lifestyles and mature.. soon people would have only heard of FF7 and not played it.. and if they did, they will not enjoy it because of the retro graphics...

When i played FF7 I was looking forward to and wondering what was coming next. I could actually put myself in Cloud's place and understand. (THAT IS A STORY LINE). Even through all the chaos with Migar and the annoying yet intriguing Sephiroth, I was able to play and enjoy EVERY second of that game unlike FF10 and FF11.. After those... i Stopped buying S.E. games. I own a PC copy and a PS1 copy of FF7. Keep them very safe too. My son even played it.

Please both the old gamers and the young bucks and remake it while we are still around to buy it... unless of coarse i acquire alzheimers... then ur fucked... just sayin.

Get it together Yoichi... bring Nobuo Uematsu back.. and Tetsuya Nomura. Get them together and make a masterpiece.

They're doing a remake for Final Fantasy X... Is there something I'm missing from what was stated by the CEO?Anyway, they've had countless of Final Fantasy titles released since 7 so I'm not holding my breath on a Final Fantasy game which will reach that kind of height and subsequently, result in the remake of 7 (Square Enix themselves have stated they haven't reached the quality and sales of 7 hitherto folks, don't bring out the pitchforks for me if you feel that another Final Fantasy title is the best in the series lol).

I remember the tech-demo Square-Enix showed years ago.  If there was ever a time they figuratively slapped the FF7 fans across the face, it was then.  They KNEW how popular and well-loved that game was.  They HAD to have known that the fans would probably love to see an enhanced version of FF7.  Why do you not show a game that you ARE planning to release on the PS3 at launch, or in the near future after launch?

That game selection for the demo was a bad idea even had they shown FF6, 8, 9, etc...  The people who loved THOSE games the most would've been enraged as well.  That was the 1st time I had felt any REAL anger for Square.  I had defended that company from so many people inside and outside of the series and genre for so many years.  They don't realize that the very loyal fans to this particular series take things to heart.  Personally, I felt like I was being punished.  It left a bad taste in my mouth.

Square Enix just wants to piss off people who buy their games, first they ruin Kingdom Hearts by putting all the new games on stupid handheld consoles. Now they won't even remake one of the greatest games ever, even though they did a teaser trailer for it at E3 (idk what year). SCREW YOU SE!

SquareEnix. You poeple have got to be the dumbest, most short-sighted smart people I can think of. The series would be dead after a FF7 remake?? Was over after the first installment? I'm not a businessman, but I'm guessing here (and probably fairly accurately...) that if you remade FF7 96% of previous FF7 owners would buy it (provided they are still gamers) in addition to 50+% of new gamers. I think that would lead to large amounts of income to your company... opening up very large doors of opportunity to make an all new FF... Seriously. You. Are. Stupid. Make a sure-fire seller or attempt a probable failure? Given that choice, you go with chance... Yeah, seems logical. Not. And when you do attempt your next game; here's some tips: 1) Choices and customization. That's freaking huge in a RPG. 2) I want to direct the battle, not have the R1 button do it for me. 3) Make me love and hate the bad guy. Make the good guy someone I can relate to. 4) Keep some cheesy-crap, but really... lose the lame attitudes. 4) Make cool summon's. COOL SUMMONS. Write that the f*ck down. And not just 8 of them... 5) Add strategy 6) For the love of all things gamer, make the story interesting.... add twists, add shockers, make me say "What in the...?" in a good way...

I'm done. Quit being douchebags and give us what we want. Remake 7, and then make something worth buying after that. Otherwise, you are already done with the series.

I've been playing FF games since 1990.  For me, the games got better and better right up to, and including, FF7.  FF7  is the only one I had zero complaints about through the entire game.  Honestly, I was SO excited when that game came out.  The game was just awesome all the way through.

I'd love to see a remake, or remaster, of this game.  I see posts all over the internet about Final Fantasy "nostalgia".  If being nostalgic means missing great quality FF games, then I guess I'm nostalgic.  Square started removing key FF elements with the release of FF8.  Now, I enjoyed FF8, but to me it felt like something was missing.  It was more than one thing.  There was no armor or accessories, and each character was stuck with upgrading one weapon.  Those are just a few examples.  FF9 was a decent classic style game.  That game was a snack to hold me over 'till the next FF game.  lol  Still, I enjoyed 9 more than 8.

FF10.....  NO OPEN WORLD MAP!  That was a huge negative for me.  The world map was the 1st thing I thought about after reading about FFX being in development.  They made 9 Final Fantasies with open world maps.  This was the 1st FF game that felt linear to me.  Tidus.. ugh..  I couldn't take him seriously when he was being serious.  AAALL that being said, everything else was great!  lol

Well, I typed too much.  I'm sorry, but I have a passion for FF Games.  Change isn't always good.  You take the winners and build around them.  I'm all for new ideas, but there's no need to take a wrecking-ball to what works for the fans.  That is what has been done.  'Sigh'.. I could go on and on...

Square-Enix!  Final Fantasy was the game that saved the company.  Now it's time to return the favor.

They don't have to remake FF7!! Square Enix needs to make a new FF with the same mechanic's as FF7 and FF10 they were both great games if they just look at the success of FF7 they can continue to create Solid FF Games in the future they still have alot roman numerals to go.

"CEO Yoichi Wada said that a remake of Final Fantasy VII will happen once the company makes a new Final Fantasy title that succeeds the seventh game in terms of quality and sales".... IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN! FFVII was a success because Square Soft actually knew what they were doing. Enix needs to realise that as long as they selfishly ignore the players requests and input and tries to continuously capitalize off Square Soft's success they will always fail. A blind man could see the mistakes they're constantly making. Games are designed based on WHAT THE PLAYERS WANT, not what the retards at Enix thinks is good. My one bucket list entry is: to personally slap the CEO of Enix for destroying what quite possibly have been the best game series in history.

The Final Fantasy Games died when they put in Real time Combat it was dumb you had to spend most of your time trying to get behind a mob, make it simple Turn Based is way better. Drop Summons that turn into Mechs any one remember Summoning Knights of the round that was awesome. Instead of having pay for Ultimate Weapons, you have to find them in dungeons or beat bosses, The Story makes the Game not Graphics FF7 had a great Story I bet people were getting teary when Areis Died, Political Story lines suck like in FF12. FF11 wasn't really a game it was a MMORPG ..

HONESTLY I think these guys are ALREADY done for, all of the final fantasy games I've seen so far are pure garbage. They should just make the remake, make it as EPIC as they possibly can, make as much money off of it as they can and just MOVE ON, the series IS NOT going to get better. They should just be done with it, STOP killing what's already dead, bring back the original that was the GREATEST and move on to something else.

And on top of my last post, I understand they want to make a game that out does FF7, but face it. The last GOOD one that they came out with was 10... 13 was a joke. There was little-no story. whatever story there was was all spread out too much because the entire game the ppl in it were separated. The battle system they set up was boring. You can only control one person. Who wants to do that! The greatest thing that the ff series had was that you can have each and every person doing whatever you wanted them to do.

Lastly, with 13, the leveling up was all screwed up. You level up little by little (5 pts or whatever) Through the ENTIRE game. And when you get to the end, THEN you get these 100 pts and crap... Its like WTF. You jump in skill n stuff by 3x when you get near the end. And just to max all your stats out. You have to beat the game first... Does that make ANY sense????

@NinjaNap Exactly! At least with the older games like 7-10, (never played 11 or 12) you had some sort of challenge to it. With 13, all you do is put one guy on healer and the other 2 on commando or magic and its a quick kill, especially with that air attacks that light and the staff girl does

What would of been a great Square Enix game is if Resonance of Fate wasnt merged with SEGA and still teamed up with Square Enix. That game would of had a hell of alot better storyline and battle system. Only because the game was hella unique. Shame on yall. and XIII was a good storyline just gameplay was boring :P and FF1 2 3 should be remade seriously >_> also FF 9 :)
