No PS4 news until 'significant leap' can be shown - Sony

PlayStation CEO Andrew House says company will keep new hardware under wraps until it can demonstrate a major advance over PlayStation 3.
Despite some suggestions that Sony would show new hardware during its 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing earlier this month, the company did not utter a word about the PlayStation 4. Explaining the console's absence from the show and Sony's wider thoughts about new hardware to MCV, PlayStation CEO Andrew House said gamers should not expect talk of the PS4 until major advances over the PlayStation 3 can be shown.
"The right time to talk about new advances in hardware is when you can demonstrate a significant leap on the current experience, and something that is going to be attractive," he said. "That remains our philosophy. Beyond that we have nothing to say at this point."
A recent analyst report predicts Sony--and Microsoft--will have their respective future-generation consoles on store shelves by the end of next year. Sony's PS4 is rumored to boast the same graphics card as Microsoft's next Xbox, as well as measures to block out used games, though analysts do not find this claim likely.

Sony's doing it right in releasing the next system only when it is ready. Take some time with it and make it incredible and high quality with superior power and reliability from the start. Sony has the chance to prove to the world that Japanese electronics engineering is top notch.
@ xTAFx, Xbox 720/Durango is 99% confirmed for Holiday 2013. PS4 (Orbis) is up in the air but 2014 at the latest. There is no way they will wait until 2015-2016 to launch the next generation. Sony is just saying this because they don't want to kill off the sales of PS3. If Sony admits that their next generation console is very near, they'll risk revealing their plans to their competitors and also the consumer may hold off spending $200 on PS3 and instead start saving up for PS4. Remember the average consume doesn't follow console cycles so they may also think like you that PS4 is not due until 2015-2016. Sony also does not want to give MS a 1-year headstart as they did with the Xbox360. That hurt them tremendously. You can say that 10-12 million people bought Xbox360 without competition until PS3 launched. Sony won't make the same mistake, which makes them delaying PS4 to 2015 highly unlikely. Also, look at what happened to Nokia when they announced they are stopping Symbian and switching to Windows Phone 7? Companies try to hold out as long as possible before announcing a replacement to make sure their old products can still sell a little bit before they absolutely have to drop the price to $99-149 levels at the End of Life so to speak.
I dread the thought of motion controllers over the hand held controller. Sure hope they don't eliminat the choice. Nothing worse than batting at the air like there is something there. Don't like never will

Well, I like Mr. Houses attitude. I want another huge leap in terms of graphics, gameplay experiences and online interactivity from what we have now. Not a PS3.5. Wait until we have hardware that can do that at a fair price point.
Damn. If this generations consoles have been out for this long and we still haven't seen any huge leap of technology I don't see anything happening soon. But even with better hardware the games won't look much better, mostly because in order to utilize such good hardware you'd have to spend more time and resources making the game look better. It's much easier to just take pretty textures and smack em on everything than make new, more detailed models for your game. If there's one thing that will see a huge improvement, though, it'll be the framerate and how much shit can happen on your screen.
Good news for gaming in general. New and better visuals for the consoles and something to keep up with the growing PC visuals.
@seanmcloughlin A pointless endeavor. Consoles will NEVER be able to keep pace with PC's, it is impossible, so to continue to try and do it, is silly.
@Sepewrath Which is why people like David Jaffe think Console gaming will die soon. They will visually look worse than PC and will cost more to make and sell. Also battling trade ins.
Great news indeed. I am lucky enough to have a PS3, Xbox & PC and they're all brilliant machines in their own right.
1 Like I got a 500 GB HDD in my PS3 and it's almost all used up from game installs and DLC content :P PS4 should have at least a minimum of 500GB in the cheapest model and up to 1TB or even 1.5TB for the most expensive model.
Well Sony could try ditching the snail paced Blu-Ray drive and the annoying updates and installs for a start...

I want to see that again between the 3 and the 4. If that means we need to wait another couple of years then so be it
this entire discussion is rather very realistic and especially this post. quite frankly i was thinking about just how much more 3d can you get in the next gen when i saw a ps2, then i saw ps3 and i think thats fat 3d, how much more can happen? by the way i still do not have a ps3 @opinions2
Ah I don't really care I love my PS3 right now best gaming system with the best games and whenever PS4 comes it will be the same cause Sony is pretty smart about getting exclusive devs and games all the time unlike the xbot.
@constantterror PS3 is far from being clearly the best gaming system on the market - at the moment its pretty much even running for both X360 & PS3 :D

1 Like Same GPU? Well that's not really exciting (for system wars talk) but, then again, it's better now that I think about it. And should be just as exciting too, as the makers will have to rely on quality exclusive games rather than their technical advantage.
What do you think about backwards compatability? I already own an awesome PS3, I say out with the old and in with the new.
1 Like @rfalstad Well imo it depends if PS3 back compatible games run better on PS4 than originals - ie. higher resolution or upscaled 1080p, better frame rates with no tearing and faster loading - if so its worth a back compatibility mode. PS3 promised standard 1080p gaming - not true. X360 upscales to 1080p and the PS3 should have at least featured a similar mode. The upscaled graphics look better on a big screen
Wish PS3 games would all work on 1080p and not the 720p like most do.
For all those going on about "just keep your current gen console and let the rest of us have a new one" screw you guys.
How quickly we forget that new games will almost always be released on the newest box even when they really don't need to be. At least have the courage to admit that your advocating abandonment of current machines without trying to present some fake option.
2 Like I agree, let's abandon current gen machines :p It's sort of the nature of the world. When the iPhone 5 comes out, we'll all be trading in. Same with the next xbox. I've been ready for an upgrade for 2 years. Sorry to the people who aren't, but the tech is 7 years old! Think about it...that's ancient in the computer world where transistor counts double every 6 months!

1 Like I have a conspiracy theory! The hardware industry is letting console technology lag behind PC tech to boost PC sales in the wake of slow sales due to Apple and mobile. This will take us back to a market similar to Super Nintendo/PC when there was a large gap in tech and PC's were the pinnacle of gaming. Just a thought, I may be way off!
And that is exactly how it should be. If they come with new consoles now I don't know how much they could be doing to make people want to buy it and ditch what they have now, unless its by force (turn off access to PSN/XBL, stop making new games etc) and such actions will not be taken lightly.

Consoles are machines made solely for games and entertainment.

@Flamerdragon I agree with you. PCs are customizable and differ according to the needs of the user, but it doesn't have to be more powerful than the consoles. There are designers ,programmers, businessmen and gamers and each want the cheapest PC that serves their needs.
The problem is for us PC gamers is not the machine power because we are way more advanced than the consoles and can upgrade any time we want.
The games are made to fit the gaming consoles more than the PCs. Hence, if the consoles don't level up, PC games will stay as they are. only slightly better. Even the PC exclusive graphics monster (Crisis) is no more a PC only game, because EA don't want to exceed the console standards.
@oOhedzOo I dont think it is because EA doesnt want to exceed console standards, but it is probably just for the money.
2 Like @Flamerdragon I agree, but console devs seem to have forgotten this and started throwing in pointless apps to waste resources, which is closing the gap between the two and making the PC look better for games than the consoles in some ways.

2 Like Someone tell Sony that current graphics cards are 15x faster than RSX (7950GT) in the PS3. There is already hardware available that will put PS3 to shame. What Sony really means is that they waiting until they can put reasonably priced tech into their console because they don't want to launch another $599 system. It makes sense, especially since MS has not revealed their cards yet and PS3 continues to sell well compared to the 360 and Wii in 2012.
7 Like why am I not amazed to see graphics whores calling for a new box. How quickly we forget the 700 dollar price tag last gen. 300 to 400 dollars is what most people will spend on a console.
Sony and MS learned from that and I can't see them releasing a new console until the xmas season next year and possibly even later then that into 2014.
Stop screaming all the time for better looking games (OMG COD LOOKS OMG!) and realize there is way more then graphics to a new console. Remember memory cards and wired controllers in the ps2? Would you want to go back to that?
I for one look for more then just the graphics when it comes to a new machine. Let's see some innovation.
First of all, the 360 was 300 to 400 at launch.
Secondly, one reason why the PS3 was near 600 was because they were introducing a whole brand new video format, which is expensive. And that was pretty damn good of a deal, being the cheapest available blu-ray player that could play next-gen games. There will be no need to introduce a new format this gen.
Although, the PS2 did introduce DVD too, I'm sure, and was only $300...
Thirdly, increased technical power doesn't just mean visuals. It effects gameplay by a lot. Artifical intelligence, physics, sound, more Ai on-screen at once, more of everything on at once for a more diverse plate of gameplay and more.

Prices for bluray technology have come down substantially. The chance of $700 consoles this round is 0. It would be suicide since these consoles are competing against social gaming and tablet gaming as well. Plus, PC gaming is on the rise.
Also, if you don't want better looking games, keep your 360/PS3. This generation of console gamers are seriously teh worst I've ever seen. You guys don't want any progress at all. I am so glad most of you were not born when we were gaming in the 80s and 90s since back then we actually wanted next generation consoles and looked forward to SNES and PS2 blowing away our NES and PS1. You new gen are just cry babies that don't want advancements. This console generation is too old - will be 8 years old by the time PS4/Xbox next launch. Pathetic. Historically, consoles were updated every 5-6 years and hardly anyone cried. Like I said, if you don't want next generation games, based on next generation physics engines, with more complex AI, and new IPs that always arise when next generation consoles launch, then move along and keep your current console for 6 more years. Further, if you don't want to pay $400-500 for next gen consoles, you want them to launch as soon as possible since that means they'll come down in price much earlier. If they delay them for 2, 3, 4 more years, you'll still have to pay $400-500 for new ones. So if they launch in 1-2 years, you can play your PS3/360 for 5 more years and buy a next gen console for $250 in 2015. Let the rest of us embrace new tech at $500.
Also, the cost of a console in theory is it's "useful" life. So if you buy a console for $500 and use it for 8 years, your annual cost is just $62.50. If you wait to buy it for $250 in 2015, it'll have just 5 years of life left. Your annual cost is then $50 per year. It's not that expensive to buy a new console for $500 since you are USING IT all this time.
@BestJinjo I think you are missing the point a little bit. The reason I still play NES or Sega genesis or N64 is the fact that the games i play are awesome. Skyrim, awesome but I don't have time for it, the market for gamers on consoles is fading. Children with angry birds on their phone have no clue about G&G or GTA1 or any other prehistoric games that we the main core of gamers love.(Main core is anyone who played Atari and ColecoVision through the current generation) I fear for the console. 8 years is fine for the age of these consoles esp. with the current tablet and phone gaming surge. Bring back games like the getaway or wolfenstein. With the PS2 still being a solid console and some people haven't made the jump to the next gen yet, I see ps4 or xbox1080 not coming out until 2015 or 2016. Also most of us can't use our system all the time. I only play when I'm in between semesters and I can't remember the last time I played a game other than GT5, GTA4, FIFA, or MAG. Aside from MAG i do not play online! So enough with overspending resources on online crap that never pans out much longer than 6 months. Does anyone play GTA4 or mariokart wii or red dead redemption or the rereleased goldeneye online anymore? Games that focus on online stuff fade when the online community move on to the next game.
1 Like @BestJinjo True that, I can't believe how innovatively starved this gen of gamers are. When we are already past due. Advances in techonology have always enabled not just better visuals but, new avenues of gameplay, and improved already existing avenues of gameplay.
Sure, more technicals may cost more money but, the software that creates it always improves along with it -- such as lighting systems that look far better but, require thousands less of man hours since they don't require manual placing of pre-determined light and shadow maps.

Maybe you should do some research before you quote prices as well. The $700 price point that was mentioned comes from the 60GB Sony PS3 which was marketed in the states at $599.99 at launch before taxes. Now, depending on which state you live in (or if you are from the states), you could have paid up to $80.00 in taxes. That puts you to $679.99. Hence the ballpark figure of $700.00. In Canada, the same console launched at a lower price than in the states ($549 CDN).
Now, if you live outside of the States, say in New Zealand, Australia, or the UK, you would be paying even more. NZ payed the equivalent of $945 US while Australia payed the equivalent of $895 US. The UK payed the equivalent of $827 US.
These are just the PS3 prices. Now that you know how to do research, you can find out the console's true global launch prices by yourself. Do yourself a favour and do your own research before you attack someone else.

@astro_viper If you live in a country where PS3 cost $1000 such as Australia, I am pretty sure the average wage over there is higher than it is in Canada.
Also, the assumption that next generation of consoles will cost $700-1000 is ludicrous. BluRay drives are very cheap now and both MS and Sony have already stated publicly that they won't be losing $ on hardware sales like last time. The days of $700 consoles are over.
Also, like I said, if you don't want next generation consoles, keep your PS3/360. The rest of us have $$$ to spend and 8 years is a LONG time to have saved up for PS4/next Xbox. IF you were a real gamer, you would have been saving in anticipation of next generation consoles. $50 away a year and you are there already.
In addition, the real cost of an item decreases the more often you use it. That's simple economics. If you bought something for $500 and used it for 1 year, it costs a lot more to you than if you bought something for $500 and used it for 8 years, unless you are OK not gaming at all. If gaming is a hobby to you, then it's one of the cheapest forms of entertainment. $600 console over 7 years is dirt cheap on an annual basis. Heck, people pay $40-50 a year just for Xbox360 Live subscription. IF you get PS4 for $500, over the course of next generation, save the Xbox Live fees you would have had to pay to MS and your PS4 is "free". So yes, it's not better to wait until the console drops to $250 unless you already have some other device on which you can game.
Finally, if the next gen consoles launch sooner, it'll give them time to drop in price. If you haven't saved up, you could pick one up in 2-3 years when they are $250-300. No matter how you slice it, financially or otherwise, the earlier next generation consoles come out the better it is.

maybe because you needed better hardware to improve over pong...The current trend for gaming is to churn out something that makes as much profit as possible, no innovation will come if the dev time increases because the costs will increase as well.

and games didn't generally take over a year to develop a decent length game... Now you've got games taking about 2 to 3 years to make... If the next gen comes before devs can bring about better time saving tools we'll be buying a slightly more powerful graphics card for about 4 games, which will probably be first person shooters that play pretty much the same.

new ip's arive when a company succesfully makes enough money to take a chance... Keep this trend of dev time going and no one will have the money to take a chance, it'll be pure sequels.
... Also your idea of cost over time isn't very useful, you don't mention the more you use a console the more it wears out and the more chance you have to buy another one... Adding in the higher dev times and you can assume there are going to be fewer interesting titles therefore no matter when you buy it, you'll still only be getting the same amount of "fun" out of it, except the games will be cheaper to buy the games.
However I do agree this gen of gamers are the worst, but thats because of all the complaints and "fanboy wars" that even some PC gamers have joined in with.
i dont think they should make a new console yet. im pretty sure if they did it would be a peice of crap. remember the ps2. the memory cards, wired controllers, no media player. compare that to the ps3. thats a huge freeking jump.
@yousef5001 The hardware is already there that will provide a huge leap in graphical improvement, more CPU processing power for the AI, physics. At Xbox next and PS4 are 1-2 years away I'd say.
