Director Takeshi Miike uses film festival premiere to reveal Capcom's legal eagle flying to theaters around the world with region-specific dubbing and subtitles.
Western Phoenix Wright fans are going to get a chance to see the ace attorney's feature film premiere after all. According to a Twitch report from this year's International Film Festival Rotterdam, director Takashi Miike revealed at a screening of the Japanese movie that it would be released worldwide.
The Twitch review describes the film as "a love-it or hate-it affair" and "a quirky yet dangerous barrel of fun." The movie reportedly closely follows the plotline in the original Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney game, in which the titular barrister solves the first cases of his career, including the murder of his own boss. To fit in all five cases from the original game, Miike's movie clocks in at a lengthy two hours and 10 minutes.

Normally, any movies based on video games are bound to suck. But there is hope for this movie for a few reasons: 1. Movies with lawyers as main characters and trials as central plot events are tried-and-true movie tropes, and the Phoenix Wright games are based on such a concept. 2. It's already received some positive feedback, so that's good to know going forward. 3. If the director is as nutty and awesome as people say, I think we'll be fine. 4. I hope it's either in original Japanese with English subtitles, dubbed well in English, or dubbed so badly it becomes awesome.
I prefer the original Japanese spoken dialogue much better, so I hope they release a video with original Japanese language track and English subtitles. Better yet, add Japanese subtitles too
Even if you've never played any of the Phoenix Wright games... this is directed by Miike. The guy is a deranged genius. How they keep letting him make movies is a mystery. If you've never watched a Miike film you need to find yourself one and watch it. Ichi the Killer, Audition, Happiness of the Katakuris, Visitor Q, Zebraman, The Great Yokai War, etc. They're all pretty messed up. The last two were actually supposed to be suitable for kids, but... it's Miike. They're still a little twisted. Actually, don't watch Visitor Q. Don't. Seriously. It's one of the most disgusting and disturbing films ever. Viewing it in its entirety could result in permanent psychological damage. Having Miike direct this film means, no matter what crazy sh** he decides to do, it'll be amazing. Or disturbing. Probably both.
@kiramasaki Allow me to enlighten you then. CAPCOM makes the games. But it sold the movie rights to respective studio who films it. They are each acting on their own.

Oh my God, it's Live Action. I fully expected it to be anime, but now that Phoenix Wright is in Live Action... I can't help but laugh. I haven't really played any of the games, so hopefully this could cover a bit for me.
So let me get this straight they are releasing the movie worldwide, but Capcom will not release any more games in the US. If there is logic here it is eluding me.
Let's not forget that the core Ace Attorney game series is all but dead. Hopefully, if this movie sells well enough, it might rekindle a spark of interest in Capcom to pick the series up again.
OBJECTION! You're going to make a good movie based on a video game, correct? Frankly, I find that hard to believe, your statement directly contradicts all previous evidence!
Though the game is heavily text-driven and there's little replayability, it's a bright, rich, and lengthy adventure that could hardly have been improved upon otherwise.
