as soon as one console is released they are working on the next one almost immediately ..so...this is not shocking..
Resume of former research and development director indicates Sony has been at work on next-generation system for almost two years.
Development on the PlayStation 4 has been tracked back to almost two years ago. The LinkedIn page of a former Sony research and development director (via Videogamer) indicates the firm has been at work on its next-generation PlayStation since at least August 2010.
This staffer says he contributed to the graphics library and security features of the mysterious "Next Generation PlayStation" during his time at Sony. Previously, the developer worked on a range of Sony hardware, including the PlayStation 2, PSP, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita.
As of press time, Sony had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.
Sony's 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing last month came and went without any news of new hardware from the company. Regarding when gamers might see the PS4, PlayStation CEO Andrew House said the company won't show the new hardware until it can demonstrate a "significant" leap over the PS3.
A recent analyst report predicts Sony--and Microsoft--will have their respective future-generation consoles on store shelves by the end of next year. Sony's PS4 is rumored to boast the same graphics card as Microsoft's next Xbox, as well as measures to block out used games, though analysts do not find this claim likely.
Overnight, Sony purchased cloud gaming company Gaikai for $380 million. The publisher intends to use the acquisition to establish a new cloud service combining Gaikai's resources with its own.

Won't even consider a PS4 until at least a year or two after release
1) Release games will look and play like garbage after 6-8 months... anyone revisit Resistance 1? lol
2) Updated hardware gen/release... the 20/60GB PS3 was full of flaws and hardware issues. Mine chewed up the first game disc out of the box and wouldn't spit it back up, so I had to return it the very next day.
3) PS3 games will become uber cheap when PS4 is released.
Not surprising. After Sony realized that flaws that were made with the PS3, they probably immediately went to drawing board to try to get things right this time around. I still love my PS3 though. So hopefully the PS4 will get everything right. They are definitely going to need the online functionality to be at least equivalent or better than Xbox Live. That's where the 360 kicks PS3's ass at. So easy to join up with friends for multiplayer matches and cross-game chat.
Good for you Americans. As I live in Brazil I will probably have to spend $ 1800 dollars on a console. -__- Those things are always expensive here. I bought my ps3 two years ago. There are still a lot of games I want to buy. PS3 is pretty good I don't see any reason for a new console now, especially when they're struggling to build a considerate difference over the current ps3.
@northernrage $1800 that`s a freackin robbery!! I will send you one from europe - it will be cheaper :D
@northernrage PS3 & Xbox 360 have been out for too long. Time for the new and improved machines to allow for better engines visuals and a huge change to new feelings
@Hconduc a poor opinion in my sights, as they have much more life left in them. Better engines visuals? Hardly. Huge change? Hardly. the next gen needs more time before it may come along and truly be a next gen.
I hope the ps4 wont come until two or three years to come because Ididnt enjoy my ps3 enough yet I only got it for less than one year with only four or three games
@soulless4now I think that the new consoles are almost done. Then they'll probably be using 2013 games to see if the new consoles are ready by pushing it's limits for a full year and then release if nothing needs to be adjusted
@Hconduc That would be a good strategy, but it'll be interesting to see if Sony will release before Microsoft this time around. The final designs might not be done just yet but the specs probably are.
Why, because Sony said it should be a 10 year life cycle? What if they said 5 years or 20 years? Would that then be the number you be stating? Sony wants a 10 year life cycle because that's how long they expect to profit from the PS3. Why do you want it? You're not missing out on anything if they release the PS4. Is it that you can't afford it? If that's the case, I'm sorry. If not, you need to give this some more thought.
What are you in a hurry for the Playstation 4? Developers have not fully utilized the Playstation 3's power and it is too soon for Sony to release the Playstation 4. I am also getting the feeling you want the Playstation 4 to come out more soon than later is, because of your username.
So? what is news about this? company starts to develop a new system before releasing it wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
I'm sure PS4 development has been in the works to some degree since the PS3 launched. Whether it's software or hardware, by the time you get close to launch, you already have a big list of things you want to do that get bumped to the next version. You usually have a team to support and maintain your released product, while a core team begins work on the next version.
Usually developing a new console takes minimum 3-4 years. So it wouldnt a surprise if they had started developing 2010.
Haha "Overnight, Sony purchased cloud gaming company Gaikai for $380 million..." I like how nonchalantly that was stated.
yea sounds like they found $380 million in the sofa and figured "what the hell, lets buy Gaikai!"
"Block used games..." I really hope thats just a rumour... If the games are download only, then having the block will be feasible.
@kamicolo If games are downloadable only, Sony wont sell a single unit in South Africa as ADSL is still very expensive :(
old school ftw new console is nothing more then good graphic and fps,.......maybe i say this because i am to much nostalgic and the new gamer gonna say the same thing in 15 years lol
I doubt they started that late. Probably started drawing up plans as early as 07 or 08. Making a console is a major risk in the business and many factors are considered before R&D departments start prototyping. It takes longer than 3-4 years.
it better not be stupid expensive, but knowing sony it probably will be. sony pays too much attention to hardware and not enough to launch titles. look at vita crazy powerful but hardly has any games.
@aryanbrar knowing sony? do you know sony? ps1's graphics was nowhere near n64, ps2 was third in graphics behind gamecube and xbox....did that jog up any memories or are you just a fanboy?
@jsmoke03 and yet xbox and gamecube along with the die out slowly ( then instantly when their new counterpart came out) while the ps1 and ps2 were still selling like hotcakes. Sony must be doing something right :)
