PlayStation 4 to cost $400+ and feature cloud streaming - Report

Japanese newspaper claims next PlayStation console will cost in excess of 40,000 yen ($428) when it launches in the US and Japan this year; PS4 to include biometric controller and cloud streaming.

With two weeks left until a Sony event that is being widely tipped as the official announcement of a new PlayStation console, more rumours have today emerged on the estimated launch window and price of the company’s next home device. Citing Japanese-language newspaper Asahi Shimbun, The Verge reported that the PlayStation 4 will be released in the US and Japan during 2013 and will cost more than 40,000 yen ($428).

The estimated price is a third cheaper than the PlayStation 3's 2006 launch, which debuted at around 60,000 yen in Japan, $599 in North America, £425 in the UK, and $999 in Australia. No specific information was provided on the launch availability for the PS4 in Europe or Australia, leading to speculation that the silence regarding the device in the latter markets may indicate a later 2014 release.

Other details in the paper's report lend further credibility to earlier rumours that the next PlayStation's controller will include biometric support in the form of a rear touchpad (like that found on the PlayStation Vita), and will be a similar size to the current DualShock 3.

A second report by the Nikkei Business Daily said that the PS4 will include integration of Gaikai's cloud streaming service. Sony acquired the firm for $380 million in mid-2012.

GameSpot contacted Sony for clarification on the two reports, but the company declined, saying that it does not comment on rumour or speculation.

Sony needs to build an entire gaming ecosystem around the PS4.  No more gaming publishers like EA and Activision just buy the title and stream it.  obviously would be a pain in the arse if you had to have an internet connection to play your games but honestly, who doesn't have 24/7 internet these days.  i think Sony has an enormous opportunity with the PS4 before Google and Apple finish invading the living room

@philMcCrevis Only around 30%% of the world population has access to the internet. And I'm only talking about access, not 24-hr connection, stability, or speed.

now they can say it, Playstation 4-LIFE.

Comparatively I agree that it is a better price than it's predecessor, but damn, that is a fat chunk of change, hoping they throw in a great title with the system or at least for the love of God produce a strong launch lineup unlike PS3's 6 titles that only increased to roughly around 12 within a year.

I was so excited about this news I told Nicholas Cage over lunch. He just gave me the most condescending look followed by the words, "You don't say..." I almost cried.

Cloud streaming could be a great bet by Sony, on the PC the hardware varies more, but on a dedicated gaming platform they might be able to work it out.

i don't understand the problem of the people they own pc.

i do not care for the better graphics or whatever they talk every time about there powerful pcs.

i prefer the simplicity of the console and the variety of games.

AMD Radeon Hd 7k for PS4 and its gonna be badass and epic ownage its gonna rape the wii U so bad...its gonn cost more  than 400$ but you wont disssapointed i promised

@xbikes me too but cmon man the the PS4 should be high end esp when it comes up  hopefully using at least GTX9series...they already do it right by choosing AMD over Intel...which is only slight lower fps but much cheaper price than Intel

If it apparently cost over 700$ ...cmon man...at least you can save up more for it..less traveling overseas, less party, less magazine subscription, less buying gadget or ipad or something and the price will come down in time if it still too expensive you can just wait for a while

if your expecting a 400 $ console to compete with top end PC gaming rigs monsters your getting it all wrong...you guys gonna hate me for this but  I rather have a 700-800$ PS4 with more cutting edge technology.....because you cant upgrade your PS4 so it has to remain good until its latter cycle...

if they choose to minimize it then it will definately obsolete compared to top end PC maybe just in 3-4 years who knows.....If you think its too expensive remember that this is electronic product we r talking about, price will come down in time

@Imperiacommando i got your point man... yeah, what spec they gonna add for just 400$ ? it isnt gonna be a big change with ps3 right? and the mean of next gent is a big leap ahead , it feel like not ps4 but ps3,5 with that kind of cost. i think 600$ more reasonable

@yuenyugo @Imperiacommando It doesn't really work like that. The consoles are also a mean to sell the exclusive games. Sony sold the PS3 under cost initially. The real price would have been $900 instead of $600. And this due to the Blu Ray disc among the other things. Now that there isn't an optical disc standard to fight for anymore they may want to do it again to kill the competition, especially the Next Box. If rumors are true the PS4 will be 50% more powerful. Add a reasonable cost and the free PSN and MS is out.

@Imperiacommando all i ever hear about pc fan boys is how consoles cant compete with pc's...its a known fact..if we would want to play pc people would of by now..some people prefer the larger variety of games on the consoles and relaxing on the couch playing their game..who cares

Imperiacommando
Imperiacommando

@marting265 i want to play on ps4 too and sit on couch but at 400$ its not gonna compete for the long run against PC and I want the PS4 to be cutting edge at least for that  temporary moment and for that  a bit more price is pretty good actually*( im not some sonny PR spy wandering on gamespot).. this is just reasonable if you reconsider it

@Imperiacommando So I can spend $400 and get a solid 4 years out of my console or I can spend $800 on a gaming pc and have to upgrade every year to be able to play the new games. Yeah, the pc is much more cost effective

s2i2p2i2o
s2i2p2i2o

@DTH17 @Imperiacommando So sick of that retarded comment, since it is not true! Yes, one might only be able to play the new games on the highest graphic settings, with AAx16 and all that shit for about a year or two, BUT then you just turn down the AA a bit and maybe have slightly less shadow quality and boom you are good to go for another 1-2 years and you are still  miles (!) ahead of every console. . . A game on medium settings on pc looks as good as the consoles counterpart when the console reaches age 2-3, so plz just shut up.

shruteshkumar

@s2i2p2i2o @DTH17 @Imperiacommando I am always amused at these guys who think PCs need to be upgraded every few months lol... the games are made for the same hardware level, a.k.a console level, so does the PC magically become LESS powerful as time passes? xD

An FYI I buy PC games at $20-$30, on launch day (here in India), the exact same game on the console at the exact same moment and exact same store costs $60... @ 1 game a month, I SAVE $360 a year at least because I play on a PC :D

slainta
slainta

@s2i2p2i2o @DTH17 @Imperiacommando And still you are going to upgrade because you can't stand your PC not using the highest settings. It's an illness. With consoles, instead, the old hw gets better and better each year because developers always find new ways to optimize it.

Imperiacommando

@DTH17 @Imperiacommando im just saying that sony dont have to limit their resources on strong issues such as CPU and GPU thats the most important aspect of all

The initial PS3 was so expensive at that time because sony implement unnecesary product such linux*who the hell operate linux on gaming system and the cell processor was unecesarry and too complicated ...plus it introduce bluray for the first time( this I can get along) with cost much more

But moreover they need to be more badass with their software and Im  afraid if they tagged it with 400$ they wont get far away

MonkeySpot
MonkeySpot

Still too early to tell - Too many issues still on the table. Price still needs to hit below $200 for my wallet to open, though. And there needs to be an announcement over used game tech (yes or no), as well as a bunch of must-have software... Madden & CoD won't cut it.

I guess what I'm saying, is that I still don't care.

Kenji_Masamune
Kenji_Masamune

I'll end up getting one after there's at least 5 must own games on the system.  For the PS3 that took almost 3 years =/

I think Sony is doing it right this generation, they have come out to announce before Microsoft, most likely will lunch the ps4 at around the same time, and are focusing on software, and social aspects of the system, while keeping a reasonable price. If all these rumours are true, well done Sony, well done.

I know I'm being cheap, but I'm gonna wait till it falls around a price range I find acceptable.

CharlesBurns

@BeingReal Always a good idea. Wait 6 months to a year for them to iron out any kinks and the price will drop by at least a third.

If they want me to buy next-gen consoles, they have to show me real next-gen games. Just high-res textures and some useless DX11 effects won't convince me. I want to see same amount of difference as there was between God of War 1 and God of War 3. Actually a lot more than that.

Lane_McNair
Lane_McNair

@DuaMn DX11 effects aren't useless. Running physics and particles on the GPU alone will potentially make a huge difference in graphics, not to mention tessellation, true 1080p, and a hell of a lot more shader power. The triangle count may not go up as much as the last gen, but that will hardly matter.

Have I ever told you the definition of a 1TB Console?  Well the new PS4 will have a 1TB memory space. How?. do I know..? umm duhh the newest has 500 GB so what the hell would make you all think Sony would keep it at 500GB so to all the PlayStation fans out there

IF YOU SMELELLELE OWWW WHAT P.S.4 IS COOKING      GIVE ME A HELL YEAH!

@hmdcrazy I can't help but wonder why they keep crapping out newer versions with bigger and bigger harddrives when they make a huge point about how easy it is to install a laptop hard drive yourself... one that would cost far less than the price increase for each new version.

@hmdcrazy Who cares about harddrive space? There are far more interesting specs to talk about.

Well... as for the $400 price-tag, that's already doing better than the PS3 launch.

Now as for the unconfirmed extra DRM put into the games, essentially blocking them for second-hand use... all I can say is kiss OWNERSHIP of your future 'bought' PS4 titles obsolete. This might be a direct-download-like service disguised in a physical medium.

The games will be tied to your unique account id as well as the console's hardware unique id as well. This will be exactly like PC gaming with using serial numbers on each copy of the game... the only catch is (so far) you will not be able to deactivate the game's serial number once it is put into your account.

It'll cost $300-400 when I buy one, and it will have more memory than launch consoles.
