this is how sony is tryin to keep up with the 3DS. they tried UMD videos and failed. No one is going to get this phone when iphones are so much better and even have decent gaming. Yea, and no analog...fail.
Tech blog Engadget shows off images of touchpad-equipped, PSP Go-like device purported to be Android-powered and game-focused; cries of "fake!" follow.
Source: See below.
What we heard: In August, Engadget first reported that Sony Ericsson was working on a new gaming-focused mobile phone resembling a PSP Go. This week, the tech blog published photos of the device (pictured), which indeed showed a PSP Go-esque form factor.
According to Engadget, the phone, code-named "Zeus," will likely run the Android 3.0 operating system--aka Gingerbread--and will run games specifically designed for it. Hardware-wise, it boasts a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 CPU, 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and a 3.7- to 4.1-inch screen. The prototype also sports the four iconic PlayStation buttons, start/select buttons, a D pad, shoulder buttons, and a touchpad with what appear to be two sensors.
The prototype was touted as being 100 percent authentic by Engadget, which credited "multiple, trusted sources" as leaking the images and information. However, that didn't stop the cries of "fake" from arising shortly after the pictures were made public. The loudest cries came from a confusing report on Now Gamer that simultaneously claimed that "Sony Europe debunked the images as false" while saying the company line was "We do not comment on rumor and speculation."
The official story: Sony had not returned requests for comment as of press time.
Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus. Besides the usually reliable Engadget's claims of multiple sources, rumors of a PlayStation Phone have been around for years--and the form factor looks consistent with past Sony designs. The most convincing sign that the device is fake is that the menu displays "A" and "B" options for buttons not found on the device itself. Engadget explains that this is because the software is likely an early build using different names for buttons, a contention evidenced by the fact that the menu says the "Z-system" software build is only "0.91.0."
This would be cool if you can also play PSP games. But I have always wondered since PSP Go they could surely create a phone from that shape just make it touch screen and add a gsm receiver since it already has a mic..
Reaper61097 Hey it does say A and B, i didn't notice that. I'm not saying its fake but that does make me curious why it uses A and B. I'm holding off buying a phone until i see the new Windows Phone or another good smart phone. I hate Apple so i would like to avoid getting an iphone.
@jay_rock_ No. I just like companies to compete for their market share. If they want to gain share, they'd better deliver better and cheaper products. If this kills iPhone, then Apple will develop a better iPhone to beat this product, then comes Sony again to beat the new iPhone, and again and again the cycle continues and who gets the benefits? The consumers. The downside to this is to make cheaper products, more sweat shops will open. So... well... there's no win-win situation in the real world
this looks interesting, hard to say if its legit or not. We'll just have to wait and see what happens in the coming months. Maybe it is real.
@1Manny93 oh yeah i forgot about nokia n-gage. i am starting to notice that i am sucker for these types of rumours.
if you look at the picture on the top it says A is to enter and B is for back but there is no A or B button lol
Its kinda like saying the X-box PHONE! or the Nintendo chat! (making it up) this is something of an idea for years just google it Ps phone or something like that
I'm really not the type of guy that immediately dismisses something as fake, but the upper part looks like it's got a lot of dust and dirt in its crevices. It just seems really strange to me that a prototype would be that poorly kept. The white background makes me a bit skeptical too.
How much PSP will it be? I want to play proper games on it, i.e FPSs that work because there are two analogue sticks.
@LinusBlue Dedicated controls. The bashing is not because it has phone capabilities, but because calling/texting is all its good for, due to the lack of dedicated controls. At least according to Sony.
Well.. At the very least it will make Apple fans take a look and realise something they never knew before.
@EddyG0RD0 Those two touch sensors look remarkably like some kind of analogue sticks to me. maybe some kinda new tech, Wouldn't surprise me one bit
This is the natural step that Sony has to take in order to remain competitive in the handheld market. I hope this does better than the N-Gage, lol.
Wasn't the PSP marketing campaign just bashing the iPhone for being a phone? "Thats not for bigboy games, it's for texting your grandma and calling your girl"
A phone + gaming deivce thats so friggin cool!!! I wonder if this is going to work out well (if the device itself is actually real), and did anyone notice the "A" and "B" buttons?
Android is excellent platform already has millions of users this won't fail it will sell millions. Users may find a way to get games free though but the psp is already known for that. Android is taking cellphone market shares at a constant pace has a number of excellent phones. With all the restriction that Apple has I wouldnt be surprised if they neck and neck iPhone in 2 years. which had a 2year head start. My Evo was the first android or phone period to beat an iPhone in a CNET review beating the iPhone 4 by one point so this will be pretty big for gamers.Research android if you don't have one don't just stick with what you know.
Android + Sony psp= best phone for gamers. I love my psp but love my Evo 4g android phone even more. If you dont have android phone don't judge because this will be like 10 or mote consoles in your pocket. Android has a ton of emulator on market already and more coming. My Evo 4g plays ps1 games, game boy advanced, nintendo, super nintendo, game boy color, game gear, genesis, Atari, computer 64, chip 8, cps2 hd, plus android has flash so can play millions of flash games and all these doesnt require rooting (jailbreaking) though rooting is recommended on android because it has a ton of non illegal benefits like overclocking. Also n64 emulator, turbo gfx, and other are in development already. Roms (games are free on emulators) so how much money will save up to million literally plus games that can't be found anymore. If your a hardcore gamer who doesn't like to be told what to do with your phone you should have a android phone anyway plus the optional ipod. Android phones don't require high contract either. So having a touch screen android plus psp controls in your hand would be great even if Sony didn't release one game but they will. Your going to get a smartphone anyway why not.
@leeko_link Posted Oct 29, 2010 10:09 am CET @EddyG0RD0 "What phone has an analog stick?" If it's gonna play PSP games it should had one (or two) and since it won't that's what makes it uninteresting to me. Of course you're right, there are no phone with analog stick but before the 3DS, there are no handheld that could feature games in 3D as well "YET"
Wouldn't putting Playstation games on an Android device (or any other open platform) open them up for cracking? I can see the market flooded with thousands of fake PSPhones that could play a good number of PSP games (especially ones that don't tax the hardware much) just fine....
If this phone is coming out I only got one request from Sony. Please comfirm it before 2011 so I can buy it instead of the iPhone ! Thanks (: LOL ~
Its so fake it's unbelieveable! First off, it would be a SONY branded product as its a games console, not Sony Ericsson. Second, its ANDROID!!!! There is no way in heck they would use android as a base OS as it could enable games to be copied to ANY android device. Looking at the pic, you can see that the phone part on top looks pretty old and well used but the lower part of the slide looks prestine. There is also obvoius pixel editing on the top left of the control pad.
Those who are saying its fake because of the A and B buttons displayed on the screen, are you unable to read what is said about that in the article? lmao.
@EddyG0RD0 "What phone has an analog stick?" If it's gonna play PSP games it should had one (or two) and since it won't that's what makes it uninteresting to me. Of course you're right, there are no phone with analog stick but before the 3DS, there are no handheld that could feature games in 3D as well.
Its a sony ericsson so it'll only work on wednesdays, and because its a psp the screen will be broke before then anyway -.-
If it has the use of Sony as it has the sign of "Sony Ericsson" must show the picture is a Sony project and is for Playstation and uses the idea for which this sort of 'phone' would be shown as a phone prototype instead of the original. If the Playstation idea doesn't work out at all, it could just be a Sony cell phone.
@jeremiah06 This proves that this is a fake, wait, they make a point on saying that it was an early build. This may give players a chance to get their favorite gaming business is going for a new foundation for their fans. The PSP as Playstation Phone (maybe PSPh as a possible chance for a name).
@Kleeyook No... Sony hasn't denied anything. But they haven't confirmed anything ether. Look next to "The official story"
The most obvious thing to do in a long while, the ngage was a poor design but all one needs to do is to a directional pad and three buttons to a phone plus a decent speck and it would be a success. Not sure about download only though.
I'd buy it. I've been smashing my Sony Ericsson against my PSP hoping theyd merge together to create a Playstation phone for quite some time now...
I really hope the two sensor things are analog stick-esque controller. If thats the case i'd be happy.
If this is real I do not think it will fail, as I think that it will be as popular as the iPhone. Just wait and see.
Well Sony already makes phones so a PlayStation brand phone isn't too far-fetched... However whether or not it'll sell is the real question.
