Was really hoping it was going to be released this year but next year isnt that bad. either way sony is still getting my money :D
Japanese launch of new handheld still expected this year; Hirai says no price cut planned in wake of Nintendo's 3DS price drop.
Gamers' hopes may have been bolstered by recent rumors that Sony's PlayStation Vita would be making its North American and European debuts this year, but Sony executive deputy president Kaz Hirai put an end to that today.
According to an Associated Press report, Hirai told reporters today that the PS Vita will not be ready for its international rollout this year. Instead, Sony is planning to launch the system in Japan later this year, with North American and European debuts to follow in early 2012. Previously, Sony had simply said the PS Vita would "successively launch in [the] global market starting [at] the end of 2011."
When it launches, the PS Vita will come in two different retail configurations: a high-speed 3G model and a Wi-Fi-only model. The top-end 3G model, which boasts a mobile broadband connection, will cost $299 (¥29,980, €299). The Wi-Fi model will cost $249 (¥24,980, €249). While Nintendo recently slashed the price of its own 3DS, Hirai said Sony would be standing firm on the PS Vita price point.
"We packed so much into the device and made it very affordable," Hirai said. "There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided that they were going to lower their price."

@GunGriffin The difference is 3DS had and still has a terrible lineup. And looking at the rest of the year, that isnt changing. Vita on the other hand, has a strong first party and third party supported lineup. The time difference honestly wont change anything.
This is a vary bad move on their part. It will now have all the same problems the DS3 is having right now 3DS has a promising future but many games are in limbo no info on exclusives, and last but not least a lack of new good third party titles because developers have openly shunned 3D thanks to the PS3 and how many conrers they have to cut on it to work it seems the 3DS has the same problem. This is why Microsoft wont do 3D games for Xbox360 because it halfs the graphics, and physics stuff you can do while at the same time forces developers to waste time on 3D performance rather then gameplay, and story development. Worst thing about it is I bought a 3DS because I like Nintendo games, but if I have to I would buy a PS Vita instead if they dropped the price to say 170 for the non 3G model, and 200 for the 3G model thats a much better price anyway.
@MrMisanthrope um yes it is and giving a link that says rumor is not a good way to proof it and I'm pretty sure that the other websites also says it is a rumor and also when I search for ps vita spec cuts that it finds are ones say that it is false and different website do post they same rumors and that isn't proof the only way you can proof is to post the actual specs of the system and not what people thinks it is and Sony hasn't even give all the specs on it like the ram they haven't posted on their website yet unlike you I don't believe in everything that I read online
@shadowhunter0: No, dude, not a "false rumor": confirmed. http://www.destructoid.com/dev-backs-up-ps-vita-ram-cut-rumor-207310.phtml (among many other links confirming it) Also, "um the 3ds sells are worse than the psp go sales"? Now you're just making stuff up. Seriously. You're actively just lying now. The PSP Go sold 17,618 units in Japan in 2010. Really. Under 20k. http://techcrunch.com/2010/03/12/17618-thats-how-many-psp-go-sony-sold-in-japan-in-2010/ In comparison, the 3DS just hit a million units in Japan back in June (after 18 weeks, compared to 4 weeks for the DS) http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/13/3ds-finally-reaches-a-million-sales-in-japan/ The PSP Go is NOT outselling the 3DS. You have no idea what you're talking about.
@DamaineStickem just put @ and the persons name like i did, just make sure they're name is put in right
well at least this will put an end to all these pointless rumor reports about imaginary release dates, it's out when its out, till then shut up
Thank God now I can buy Uncharted 3 and Assassin's Creed Revelations and save up money thru Christmas to buy the PS Vita YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I could see the vita being better than the 3DS. But because of the price drop, the fact that the 3D is amazing, and i still dont trust sony with anything I will be getting a 3DS.
I think Sony did this due to supply and Nintento. If Nintendo didn't lower their price Sony would have made the attempt.
oh thought it about this year, anyway, im not buying it day one or months later until either ps3 or pspvita is not almost the same price or the psp vita is almost the same price as the psp as of now.still, ps3 is way better.
@Lunchfriggenbox You know very well I was joking the real point I was trying to make is how does anyone know that any game announced for the PSVita is a launch title. I keep reading comments that say the PSVita has a better launch lineup then the 3DS when no one has announced which games are launch titles and which will be released later. To be serious Im certain Uncharted for PSVita will be great but Killzone for PSVita will probably be bad because its being developed by a third party company.
@n0matter I can tell u have not been following Vita news lol! And dude I've been with Nintendo longer than I been with Sony! Also who r u calling a fanboy? Im not the one flaming a system now am I... Im just stating the obvious.
Not exactly good marketing... If they just put out the small amount they can make worldwide, anyone remember the Wii's launch? those things sold out everywhere and it created a huge buzz... If anything it helped the console sell... Just think it'd be a better strategy than leaving it longer.
as for the ps3 - it was too expensive and no games i wanted i bought it later when it had some games (now it has plenty more) and when they halved the prize gaming is all about GAMES
theres no reason for sony to lower prize on the vita - people who want that machine will buy it no metter what - sony has that kind of fans id buy vita myself IF it had the games but to me the psp just had games i might as well play on my ps3, ported or not the kind of games im into so for me the ds provided unique fun gaming - not to be found elsewhere im sure the 3ds will too (i got it and its great) - but like ANY console it lacks games the first year or 2 so unless vita has some very different awesome games ill just stick to my 3ds(any ds)/ ps3 combo - what do i need the vita for if there are no games i want?
Shame their missing the holiday season, but at least it means the device should be better than ever at launch.
@shadow655 "More people care about the Vita than 3ds cause there's far more games and better tech! Plus these so much more potential!" Actually, there are no games. There's not even a system. You're the typical Sony fanboi that runs around sixe months prior to the release of any Sony console boasting about how awesome it is even though all you've seen of the system is fan art and rumoured titles. If the system doesn't have a solid launch line-up (and from the looks of things, it has ONE good game), all of the tech in the world isn't going to matter. I'm sick of console manufacturers adding unnecessary bells and whistles to a system that also ultimately add to the price tag. Who Skypes on their PSP? Who wants a rear-facing touch screen? Seriously, make a game console that JUST plays games and you'll sell a 100 million of the things. DS Lite anyone?
@monson21502 I'm going to buying it for 300! Cause I play my PSP more than my PS3 so why not! I cant wait to get one next year cause its going to be one of the best handheld ever!!! I feel bad for anyone who cant see that cause there just going to miss out!
no1 is gonna pay 300 for vita to play games that the ps3 can play. your much better off getting a ps3.. oh by the time this comes out a wii u..... imo sony is digging a deep grave for the ps vita before its even born.....
@McBoogerballz Its region free just like the PSP! Its not being delaying to US or Europe cause they never gave a release date in the first place. And at E3 Sony even said it wasn't coming out this year anyways.
@zzamaro More people care about the Vita than 3ds cause there's far more games and better tech! Plus these so much more potential!
The Vita looks amazing. I'd love to get one but I won't buy one until there's a few great games on it. I've got an iPhone but I rarely play games on it. iPhone games are ok but they're nowhere near the quality of PSP titles, let alone the PSV. I can only play a game on my iPhone for about five minutes before it starts to annoy or bore me.
good move by Sony if the PSvita does not launch with enough great games that people want. Then the launch will bomb, even though Sony will miss the Christmas rush of 2011. Uncharted, Killzone, for PSvita must be ready at launch for North America. Japanese comsumers are more likely to give new PSvita games at shot then NA. Which are more fickle. Sony has learned from the Nintendo 3DS launch. You get 1 chance to make a great first impression. Sony is wise to wait until killer games are ready for the Vita launch.
@ZenesisX They probably know what they are doing, but it seems sort of like a missed opportunity to skip out on the Christmas rush. ******************************************************************* Personally, I have no problem waiting 1-2 yrs for the PSVita. Sony is making a big mistake by not getting it out early, especially with the 3DS price cut. This just means that the 3DS will have a huge lead in sales and software by the time the PSVita gets released. With a larger user base, 3rd party developers will be eager to make more games for the 3DS. The only reason I can see Sony doing this is because they do not have enough 1st & 3rd titles for launch or the PSVita is still going through additional development and they will only have enough made to ship for the Japan market. If that's the case, it's probably best that they wait even though they will be losing a couple million in sales from the holidays.
I guess it was a smart move. It's hard going against an 169$ alternative when your device costs more than an iPod touch.
Oh what's this? An arrogant Sony exec.? That somebody else is called Nintendo, who managed to whoop your behind with underpowered hardware at retail. Have some respect.
I said it on another link.. This is fiiiiine by me. There's too many awesome games coming out this year and as such I wouldn't have been able to buy one straight away anyway. I'd much rather wait until after Christmas and spend all my little pennies on this baby :) Cannot wait for this thing. Every time I see gameplay videos it looks amazing.
Semi smart move, with failure of pspGO, and all these holiday GOTY treats hittting PS3 and 3DS pricecut. its seems like the right thing to do or sales might suck regardless of the even longer wait.
well price is a factor i enjoyed my psp. and even though price is not a factor to me it is to other people. just look how well the psp did last month and look how poorly the it did at the higher price tag & how poorly the higher price psp go did. you can even look through history all handhelds prior were colossal failures. the psp though not a failure was clearly beaten by the ds could have been price, could have been lack of software or both who knows. i guess my point is bigger is not always better. game gear lost, Atari lynx lost. both had better specs but price was high and had no gamest. we will see if this price holds for the vita, i guess that is why Nintendo keeps the specs low so cost wont be to high except for the 3ds which was over priced so it didn't sale well. and that has been corrected
Eeeewwww. That may be bad for sales. They'll miss the holiday season, which is a big deal,at least in the U.S. Of course mayber it will boost sales during the normally slow spring months. That is,if anyone has the money to buy it after the holidays. Anyway,I'm considering getting one in addition to my 3DS.The system itself looks fantastic. Now it all depends on if it goes the way of the first PSP,which looked great, but which Sony seemed to forget was there, and it ended up being more of a media machine than a game system. We'll see next year.
@hatieshorrer This is what i like about ignorant gamers. he simply said if Uncharted was a launch title the handheld would do very well do to the large demand for another Uncharted game. It's an opinion and a good one considering the strength of that franchise
People are sure worried about the PS Vita beating the 3DS here. Who honestly cares if it does? Same with thinking 3DS will beat PS Vita. To each their own opinion, but seriously, they are just machines. I hope both systems do well, pumping out excellent games and apps.
