There is no comparing between valve and other bad companies like e.g. EA (a bit on EA) those guys make great games into very very bad crap, I mean look how many Need For Speed series they made it was fantastic they release one Need For Speed game for £40 and then 4-5 months later there you go a new Need for speed game for £40 again. (Some Need For Speed games where awesome but not all). So that is how much I will say about EA for now. PS you suck. And lets see about Valve, now these guys are the BEST, Portal 2 the best Ducking game I've ever played and what did valve did till September 20?? They gave out Portal 1 for FREE!!!!? I mean does anyone see the difference between these 2 companies if no, than I feel very very sorry for you. Valve keep going and Don't ever stop.
Valve to add complimentary new test chambers, challenge modes for Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and Mac this summer.
Earlier this week, Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi revealed that the company's recently released Portal 2 would be getting its first batch of downloadable content this summer. Today the developer gave a few details on the DLC, most notably that it would be free of charge to all players.
The first Portal 2 DLC pack will feature new test chambers, as well as single-player and cooperative multiplayer challenge modes. The pack will also add leaderboards and will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Mac versions of the game.
The free DLC for consoles marks a change from Valve's last project. With Left 4 Dead and its sequel, add-ons were free for the PC but were $7 on the Xbox 360.
Released to critical acclaim for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC last week, Portal 2 is the continuation of the 2007 Orange Box pack-in Portal. The single-player portion of the new title continues the travails of human lab rat Chell, who in the original game used a portal gun to create interdimensional openings on ceilings, walls, and floors in an effort to escape the Aperture Science labs and thwart the diabolical artificial intelligence known as GLaDOS.
In addition to extending the story of Chell in the single-player mode, Valve introduced a new multiplayer cooperative mode. In it, players take control of two robots, named Atlas and P-body, and work together to tackle their own set of portal-related problems.
About my previous comment I realized that it sounds like I was trying to hate on VALVe and Chet but I'm not. The news made me excited.
Other than the R6: Vegas Black & Red map packs, this is the only time i have 'Ever' seen a developer provide FREE DLC (on a console), and to be totally honest, im not suprised its VALVe as they really are on the pulse when it comes to knowing what 'Gamers' want, they also understand that its because of gamers that they are in the position they are. Other 'certain' developers should be ashamed of themselves (imo).
YEAH! Thank goodness they didn't charge for this, but we kind of paid for it when we purchased the game itself.
that's awesome. free AND adding a little multiplayer action with the leaderboards. the only thing it needed.
"You saved science". C'mon, I need more! I need a fix! Of course I love it being free and all, but can they deliver it soon? XD
Can't wait for this. @Flammingboard, the rumor that I have heard floating around is that there is no Half-Life 2 Ep. 3, BUT that it is Hal-Life 3. Anywho... as I said before can't wait, and can't wait for valves next announcement on there next game... *crossfingers for HL3*
So I wonder why big companies like EA and Activision can't "afford" to offer DLC for free when smaller ones like Valve can? I would guess that it's because Valve doesn't have as many overpaid corporate shmucks. Also, I would encourage people to post in the CoD forums and ask why they don't offer free DLC while Valve does; see what you get for a response (if any).
I dont like Valve's game that much, BUT I love valve for what they do with their games. Valve is the perfect exemple of how a game developper should be and just for that, its the company right now who I respect the most.
that's pretty sweet, the character customization thing, where you buy stuff, really pissed me off though..
Moloch121 Guess you missed the point when I said pc ALWAYS gets free DLC....not once in a generation.
dear valve, i pretty much love you, please continue showing the world what a bunch of ass hats most other videogame developers are..
Valve: The opposite of E.A. Keep up the great work guys. Also, WHERE IS EPISODE 3?! Yeeeeaaaaaaarggggghhhh!
This is how it should be done. If you're gonna bilk the consumer with piece-mealing out content that should have been on the disc in the first place, the least you can do is throw your costumers a bone every now and then. With the advent of Xbox Live Micro$soft broke decades of online gaming tradition with their pay-to-play model and nickel and diming marketing. I wouldn't mind it as much ifI all these consoles didn't bar free user created content for games.
@Skate218 For the Xbox, yeah. But for PC, Valve always gives the free DLC in 'updates,' which are given pretty often and never cost the customer a penny more (for their PC games at least). Steamworks is supposed to work in this way, so I think the PS3 will also be run in a likewise fashion.
The free DLC will be the Portal 2 DLC Lobby. It's a totally free new lobby like level with booths to purchase more DLC.
Good job Valve, I'm glad you actually care about your customers, unlike another certain company that does the opposite. *Coughs*Activision*Coughs*
@ BLKR4330 Well yes of course.Unless it's really big,DLC should definitely be free.Valve deserves praise here for releasing DLC not because they realized there were a few extra bucks in my pocket, but because they have more cool stuff to add to the experience. I positively hate the "nickel-and-dime" world of MS and the DLC.Constantly it's,"Buy this, upgrade to that, download this!"So this freebie (sort of,I did pay 60 bucks for the game) is greatly appreciated.
When people ask me what's my favorite dev team, I usually give what ever name i'm enjoying at that specific point in time. Dev teams change..get on your good side..bad side. Then they go, "what about Valve" and then I go..oh..that team..I often forget about them because I find it impossible for a team to be so perfect. Almost as if they are a myth in a book. Everything they touch turns to gold..they take our wishes and make them fold before our eyes. Valve is legendary. In my opinion.
