Online video exhibits way in which to play ostensibly entire PS3 library on Sony's soon-to-be-released new portable.
When the PlayStation Vita hits store shelves in the West next month, gamers may have an even bigger selection of games to play than Sony intended. Today, videos have surfaced online showing a way in which PS Vita owners can use their PlayStation 3's Remote Play functionality to stream ostensibly any game onto their portable device.
As reported by Eurogamer, the feat is performed by way of a hack to the PlayStation 3's firmware. Users must jailbreak their PS3s and then install firmware v3.55. In this version of the PS3's operating system, the PS Vita is regarded as a mobile phone. A full explanation of the workaround can be found in the Spanish-language video, below.
The PS Vita's compatibility update with the PS3, better known as firmware 4.0, arrived during the first week of December. In addition to Remote Play functionality, the update allowed PS3 owners to copy content such as games and music to their PS Vitas.
Sony had not responded to a request for comment on the matter as of press time.
This is how it should be:
1: you buy ps Vita and Ps3 systems for "GASP" $550
2: you buy a universal game disk/card/download that works for BOTH PS3 and Vita
3: you are a happier gamer since you only had to buy the game ONCE!
Games are too expensive for Sony to make us buy them again. This is why I have yet to buy a PS Vita, since it is basically a money pit.
If this is true then why in the world hasn't Sony done this themselves? Seriously! *Slaps Sony* Wake up you fools! This is what gamers want!
Too funny. There will probably be some issues with a few PS3 games trying to run on the PSVita since the hardware isn't exactly the same. We wonder why Sony continues to lose billions every year.
To all people that think the PS Vita got hacked. It didnt. This uses a jailbroken PS3 and the remote play functionality. Vita will likely take a bit before any definitive hacks are made. Considering they released a beta PS vita dev kit. Sony is taking a more open response to consoles
Old news I am replying about, but if you look at how Sony handled the PSP (shovelwaring all ps2 and ps3 content), this is a pretty major "hack" since it means only ever having to buy the PS3 and never the vita version of any game.
Epic fail. Sony schooled by hackers. Just like the hackers schooling Sega and that Dreamcast system. Ah, the memories... XD
@Darnasian - the vita is not connected via cable while using remote play. It is however connected by wifi or through the internet. No cable needed. You do however, have to sync it with your PS3 before you start using remote play. The sync stage is the only time it needs to connect via cable just like the controllers.
wow gs just told people how to hack into the ps vita...i'm thinking something is wrong with this article lol
Im not sure why this is considered a "hack" this is really an expansion on what sony already offered. If it was really hacked then vita sales would be going through the roof in japan and the u.s. Couldn't say the same about the game sales though.
que the lawsuits, naw lol... im sure sony' still has a giant proverbial welt around their eye as a reminder of the last one haha
Dudes don't get me wrong but this is just remote control... And because the Vita has similar specs to the PS3 it's obvious to run the PS3 games... But there is this thing no one notice...the Vita has to be connected via a cable to the PS3... So why play Red Dead on the Vita when you can play it on your huge LCD that you stay near...
shouldn't this already be a feature on the Vita and PS3? LOL. Let the hackers show Sony how to do things right and sell their products.
I am amazed that this is not a standard feature. Leave it to the hackers to find out all the good stuff. But it just screams to me poor customer loyalty. If sony lets this fly then I am 100% going to buy a vita. But if sony locks this out then no thanks. Literally sick and tired of sony removing feature after feature. But we all know what is going to happen. Sony will go off saying this will just lead to massive pirating bla bla. Sony needs to embrace certain hackers the odd time, you know, not all of them have bad intentions...
I find it amusing that this has been (somewhat poorly) implemented already on the PSP for almost a year. The remote play was often laggy, but it was possible to play a few games.
all current PS3 owners to play ps3 console games on the portable! And even aybe give an incentive for this idea in the way of VSPita's first major price break in the form of $50 for the WIFI and 3G and $75 for the WIFI only!! (I do adherently deny for Sony Playstation in any of its time zone functions.).
no shhhh*T sherlock to all who did'nt see this as a response to potential wiU first year buyers - at or near nintendo's release, guess who's LAST gen console company will then release marketing strategy will say - "want to keep your PS3 for anonther year and play all your library on the new PSVita!! We are now makind the brand new PSVita (in November) OPEN to
funny how Sony hyped up remote play for the PS3 to PSP back in the day. But ignore it now that they got the vita. And so some hacker decides to take advantage of that long forgotten feature. Pretty funny stuff if you ask me. Even funnier if Sony then releases it as a "feature" for the vita in the future. Or sad if they lock it out hardcore to prevent Vita owners trying to get their money's worth.
Somebody over at Rockstar just read this article and is screaming "Guys, I know what we can make for the Vita!"
@kkthesonicfan How about you guys just ignore buying1999, he's literally been on about it longer than I've even had my new PC which I got back in May last year. I used to be a PS3 fanatic back then - and therefore ended up wasting my own time on him. I'm just amazed for how long he can keep up with the whole Carmack thing, you'd think by now he'd have gotten at least something better to make himself feel the purchase was worth it with.
I wonder if Nintendo has a pattent for the Wii U and its controller? If so then Sony could not do the same... thus a "hack" that Sony will not stop. ... Wonder if Nintendo could still sue?
@buying1999 If I'm Sony Defense Force No. 2 then you must be the Cheif Diplomat of Microsoft Miltary Opertations.
I hope gamespot realizes its a very bad idea to post the video here lol Oh wait a second...gamespot will do anything for media coverage and hits on their site....never mind.
This could be a major selling point of the Vita, for the same reason the Nintendo Wii U will have something similar. Sometimes someone is using the TV or you can't play on the console for some reason, you just pull your Vita and start playing. And plus, the feeling of doing it must be really awesome.
This is pretty pointless, but we know hackers do similar things only for the pleasure to achieve them. Harrr... my sailors!
Jesus Sony looks like even 2012 ain't starting off well for them either. Such a shame that now that their system's been hacked people are running rampant on it. I really hope they get this taken care of ASAP.
Can anybody tell me is sony working on remote play that it can play any game without this firmware 3.55?
@lewishim666 actually with remote play you can access your ps3 anywhere in the world through the internet I know I have access my ps3 with my psp from miles away to states away through the internet and you can even turn your ps3 on and off just have to set it up and if you think that way isn't secure then you are wrong only way to do this is if you sync your vita to your ps3 which requires you to hook it up to your ps3 with a usb cable and no you don't need to jailbreak your ps3 to do this Sony has already shown that it can do this at one of the press conference and they did it with kz3 hell you can even remote play ps1 minis and some psn games on your psp remote play on the vita is going to take it a step further
Why would anyone do this? Why is it such a big deal? If your playing PS3 games on your VITA through remote play then you have to be within 100ft of the PS3 anyway. So if your so close to your PS3 why not just play on your PS3 on the big screen? This isn't news. It's useless. With that said I understand that the PS3 needs to be jailbroken to use this. From that perspective this is a problem because that means you won't have to own the PS3 games to do this. I really don't think that this will detract from PS Vita game sales though since you still have to be so close to the PS3 and why even buy a Vita if all you want to do is play PS3 games on it?
Listen to the comments Sony, people want their ps3 on a handheld, not handheld games designed from the ground up.... As the Poster below said, this would be the sole reason I would ever get a handheld.... And would finally get them a decent percent of the over 15 years old gamers
@buying1990 ive see your ugly bullcrap comments before with that stupid little quote at the end. just because playstaion has handheld consoles and xbox doesnt that doesnt give you the right to criticise something because your jealous. your obviously another "fanboy" who still thinks the ps3 vs. xbox argument is still cool. well guess what. ITS NOT !. cant you see everyone is tired of your stupid comments. go and GET A LIFE.
@Buying1990 Wow man! I'm a Xbox 360 fanboy, but I own a PS3 too. In my opinion 360 is my favorite system, but don't jump on everyone for liking the other system! Sheesh!
If this legitimately worked without a need for jailbreaking a ps3, i wouldnt mind having a ps vita. Im sure a lot of owners out there would like to play their favorite ps3 games on a handheld every now and then.
