Red Dead Redemption, Enslaved, God of War lead IAA nominees

By Brendan Sinclair, Senior Editor

Rockstar Western leads the pack with nine nods for Interactive Achievement Awards, Namco Bandai action game and Sony's mythological trilogy caper secure six nominations each.

If it's an honor just to be nominated, no game has been honored more by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences this year than Red Dead Redemption. The AIAS announced the finalists for its 14th annual Interactive Achievement Awards, giving Rockstar San Diego's open-world Western shooter nominations in nine different categories--including Game of the Year--more than any other title.

Red Dead Redemption has already been named GameSpot's 2010 Game of the Year and was among the nominees for the Game Developers Choice Awards' top prize. It also garnered IAA nominations for a swath of categories, including Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, as well as Outstanding Achievement nods for animation, game direction, sound design, and more.

Rockstar San Diego's latest isn't the only game with a chance to take home a posse of IAA awards. Namco Bandai's action game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and God of War III also scored a half-dozen nominations each, with the latter title staking its own claim to the Game of the Year honor. Other nominees for the AIAS Game of the Year include Treyarch's best-selling Call of Duty: Black Ops, BioWare's sci-fi role-playing game Mass Effect 2, and the breakout iPad gaming hit Angry Birds HD. (The standard version of Angry Birds for the iPhone was actually released in December 2009.)

Angry Birds For GOTY? What The Heck......

mikeasimov 6 pts

It's a one or a two man race this year whenever Mass Effect or Red Dead are in a category. Almost no association has strayed too far from that and whatever genre is poison in the office takes a hit. I don't like westerns, so it's no shock that I'm surprised when ME2 loses. Can't be all that different from on high from the way we all are.

acedraco123 5 pts

wheres ff XIII it should at least be nominated for visuals art design and rpg.

Cillerboy 5 pts

gran turismo won for "outstanding achievement in soundtrack"? u must b joking...

calvinsora 13 pts

Kudos to the IAA for having the guts to nominate Angry Birds. Yes, it's not as huge or full-featured like other games, but it's bloody addictive, fun, simple and charming, not to mention incredibly cheap and accessable. That being said, SMG2 is my choice for GotY, and it not being in the run for GotY makes me sad.

I believe many other games may surpass GOW3 but I also know that it was the best game I have ever played. I remember when I had bought it at launch but I played the first level with all of my mates at midnight as I had a sleepover. Ahh... those were days were legendary . All of us went WOW when Kratos pulled off his first magic. Anyways GOW3 has the best following- Visual graphics Opening level ever made.

eagles_band, you're totally right. If anything the female Sheppard deserved it more.

DarkBuhamut 5 pts

@eagles_band Monkey should have that award wrapped up anyways

x-2tha-z 13 pts

I hope RDR wins every award it's nominated for. Game is awesome.

eagles_band 5 pts

I'd like to know how Commander Shephard is nominated for Outstanding Character Performance. God, his voice actor is so dull, no emotion whatsoever.

MooncalfReviews 35 pts

They forgot to mention that ME2 picked up a very impressive 5 nominations too. Gamespot really has something against Bioware games. Good to see Alan Wake get nominated for some good categories though.

Keitha313 7 pts

@Via-Chicago Do you honestly consider Black Ops as a GOTY contender? I'm not talking about the other game you mentioned, but games are in the end of the day all for fun and I can't really say I found Black Ops that fun alot of people do agree it seems like a very repetitive experience.

Keitha313 7 pts

@LondonGamer986 Totally agree with you on your comments about Fifa 11 as you will see I slated it quite hard on my review, the game isn't about football the people who made it make me sick because in all honesty they know nothing about the beautiful game its more of a Rugby game small players stand barely any chance of proceeding in the game because the game is all about PHYSICALITY *buuuuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz* Wrong EA small Footballers are a pain to get off the ball and your not allowed to run into a opposing player without touching the ball first otherwise that is a FOUL funnily enough but thats enough of my rant god damn it....

Keitha313 7 pts

@LondonGamer986 well I never thumb my own comments up someone just follows me around and conveniently thumbs my comment up as soon as it is posted.

LondonGamer986 5 pts

@curly14 To be fair to gamespot users, his/her comment only got one thumbs up and that was probably from themself.

LondonGamer986 5 pts

If FIFA 11 wins sports game of the year, these awards are stupid. In the words of comic book guy... Worst.Game.Ever!!! I like FIFA games but F11 is so bad.

Kwiksilva 5 pts

I love how how gamespot doesn't even mention Mass Effect 2 till way latter in the article clearly shows their bias.

laptop12 5 pts

lol gt5 was on the list Outstanding Achievement in Soundtrack and the review of gamespot, the soundtrack was on the bad list, GS fail and hearing only bieber

tajvaderHUN 5 pts

Outstanding Achievement in Soundtrack - Gran Turismo 5?! It's soundtrack was awful...

GearsofRage9 5 pts

1. Heavy Rain was a very good game that i feel was under-appreciated last year that really needs to win & 2. Angry Birds for GOTY really!?

Via-Chicago 5 pts

I love Angry Birds but I would hate to see them beat out RDR or COD. Angry Birds should fall under a different category than the console based games because of how much content is involved in the other two.

xSmithy 5 pts

i hope we get more diversity from these awards instead of Gamespots where they may of well of said: 'And the winner for EVERYTHING is... Red Dead Redemption'

Sidivan 9 pts

@toysoldier34 You actually have me all wrong. I can't stand FPS games, though I did play Black Ops heavily for a couple weeks, which was the first shooter I got into since Goldeneye 007 for N64. Some of my top games are Alan Wake, Final Fantasy 7, Zelda: Link to the Past etc... I appreciate small developers with innovative concepts. I just can't see the magic of Limbo at all. It's a retro platformer with highly stylized graphics. Nothing more, nothing less. Heavy Rain is at the top of my gamefly queue btw.

howie1926 6 pts

These nominations are a joke. Seriously...Angry Birds for game of the year?!? Where is Castlevania: Lords of Shadow did not get nominated in anything??

drokmore 6 pts

Angry Birds I hear is great, but really game of the year for a phone game, I dont think it measures up that well.

Get_Shorty 6 pts

Black Ops ha at least someone got it right and aren't listening to haters.

whitejackel 7 pts

i say RDR or Enslaved both great.

Unelmat 5 pts

Gran Turismo 5 for soundtrack?!!!

blancobo 6 pts

Angry Birds deserves recognition due to its hit simple gameplay elements. In the end it probably deserves the most credit on the whole simple to engaging gameplay but still RDR will most likely win due to its RICH and excellent technical displays combined to the great gameplay elements. From the list of nominees for GOTY the only three TRUE worthy nominees are: God of War III, Mass Effect 2, and Red Dead Redemption. The quality of graphs for CoD is simply pathetic! Content wise, these are the only three content rich games, though Cod has many cool playable elements, the game is but a taste of war... contrary to other Treyarch products like CoD III and CoD:WaW.

the_requiem 12 pts

Got Enslaved demo and somehow it didn't work for me, as in, didn't interest me. I've heard story and character work is real good, but for me gameplay and fun factor are most important. That is where RDR wins.

Toysoldier34 23 pts

@Sidivan Thats why they make less innovative games like Call of Duty for you. Some people can appreciate great and original games like Limbo, Heavy Rain, and Amnesia. Though most gamers these days could care less and only want the next blockbuster shooter.

Toysoldier34 23 pts

They need to bring Red Dead Redemption to PC and not port it crappy and make it run bad like GTAIV.

Solamon 5 pts

@Merex760: Agreed. Hopefully all this recognition will get people to give Enslaved a second look. Unfortunately, so many of those people will be buying it used now. Ninja Theory is such a great company, but has had such a continuous streak of bad luck. It makes me proud to say that I bought that game on Day 1.

Rafass 9 pts

Come on! Angry Birds for game of the year? I mean its a fun game to play for 10 minutes and thats all it is. This is messed up so many good games and they choose Angry freaking Birds???

thenephariouson 12 pts

Enslaved is brilliant and defo worth a look, highly underestimated.

SicklySunStorm 9 pts

Still haven't given Enslaved a look yet. Red Dead and GoW III totally deserve all the awards they get, they're both awesome.

Merex760 21 pts

Enslaved is the best game no one played last year. Such a shame. Glad to see it getting some recognition.

el3m2tigre 5 pts

When i played Red Dead Redemption for the first time i was left with my mouth open. I never expected myself to like a game so damn much. Red Dead Redemption GOTY? A very well deserved title for this work of art.

Slash_out 11 pts

Enslaved is a very good game, glad it got so many achievements. I hope it will motivate the devs into making an Enslaved 2 soon.

shkar 5 pts

For me there were so many great games last year but the best I can summarize them as follows: 1-God Of War III 2-Mass Effect 2 3-Heavy Rain 4-Red Dead Redemption
