Trion Worlds' MMORPG does away with seven-day trial, now offering new users infinite, level-capped trial called Rift Lite.
Trion Worlds is taking a page straight from Blizzard's playbook, today announcing that its massively multiplayer online role-playing game Rift is now free-to-play until level 20.
Beginning today, those who sign up to play the fantasy MMORPG can traverse the game's world for as long as they wish but can only reach a maximum level of 20. Previously, a seven-day trial was available to those interested in trying out the game.
The new version of the game is called Rift Lite, and it mirrors World of Warcraft's Starter Edition, which launched last year, and lets gamers venture through Azeroth until level 20.
On top of Rift, Trion Worlds is currently at work on two new titles. These are massively multiplayer real-time strategy game End of Nations, as well as Defiance, a project currently being developed in conjunction with the Syfy channel.

After the shock I had with playing Dungeons and Dragons Online I'm never falling for this "play for free until level x"crap. Why would I invest time in a game that prevents you from reaching your potential unless you pay?
I have to admit I'm enjoying RIFT more than WoW, but they will both end up being dropped if PSO2 gets a release outside of Japan.
I just recently started playing RIFT again, they churn out new updates and additional content at a remarkable pace, which continues to earn them a lot of respect among reviewers and players. It is definitely a WoW clone, but hey...I started playing RIFT because I liked WoW, but wanted something new. The actual rift and zone events definitely make this game unique, along with the best character customization of any MMO in my opinion. The amount of options you have to build your character, with 3 soul trees, and multiple roles is awesome. You don't find the SAME spec'd healers/tanks/dps classes all over the place like you do in WoW, where the only difference in players is their gear. I was wondering how the game was faring financially, but recently they reported profits of 100 million and secured 85 million in funding, hopefully this trial will introduce more people to RIFT. Just don't expect a radical difference in game play, like EVERYONE already knows, this game deserves it's "WoW clone" title...but hey, that doesn't mean it's not good, because it is a great game.
They saw Blizzard's free till level 20 trial and copied it. :P On the other hand, this kind of thing would benefit twink players, they only PvP at low levels.
I played rift for a bit after WoW got boring and before ToR launched, it's actually a very fun game, don't listen to the haters.
So at lvl 20 you are just not allowed to play the game anymore unless you pay or do you just stop gaining XP being stuck at 20 until you pay??
i don't really like the whole "play for free untill a certain level" but ill give rift a try .i kinda hope this game comes F2P sometime in the near future
I came from Rift and actually had a great time. What makes this game are 2 things: 1) the ability to mix and match talent trees and having multiple roles. 2) The invasion/rift events. Going back to the ability to mix and match talent trees, one can be dps and then switch to support healer on the fly... though one needs to be out of combat. This can be very very useful and fun to tinker around with. The invasion events got me hooked in this game. This is probably a taste of what Guild Wars 2 dynamic events will be like. Unfortunately I got bored of Rift -- I max level with max tier pvp gear. For those are haven't played this game, should give it a try. Currently I'm playing SWTOR, and Bioware needs to implement some systems from Rift.
Still not going to help them against WoW. I'm not a WoW fan, never was, never will be. While many MMO's follow the path of WoW's success, it does not make them clones. RIFT, However, is pretty much WoW with better graphics. You don't need to be a genius to figure that out, just have eyes.
Uh....yeah. Making an extended trial isn't really going F2P. Oh well, at least it gives a chance for people to be interested.
@emperiox Yeah, I think I will try this trial thing. While, it the game may be similar to WoW (also, I personally like Cata), the talents and the Rifts are something new.
@Link3301 I actually like Rift better then WoW. I really don't like the direction that WoW has been headed in since Cata.
