SA reiterates R18+ support; confirms plans to abandon MA15+
South Australian Attorney-General John Rau has provided more details into his plan to eliminate the MA15+ category in his state.
In April this year, South Australian Attorney-General John Rau announced plans to abolish the MA15+ classification for video games in South Australia in favour of an R18+ classification, provided the Commonwealth Government is first to introduce the adult rating at a federal level.
Now, Rau has reiterated his plans to "fold" the MA15+ rating into R18+, something he plans to do as soon as his fellow state and territory attorneys-general can unanimously agree to introduce R18+ for games in Australia.
Speaking to GameSpot AU, Rau clarified that he doesn't want to "muck around" with the existing classification guidelines. He simply wants parents in South Australia to be given a clearer choice between games made for children and games made for adults.
"I'm working on the basis that while the Federal Government sets the rules, it's up to each individual state to police them," Rau told GameSpot AU. "I cannot imagine it will be a problem for South Australia to fold the MA15+ rating into the R18+ rating, once Australia has one."
Rau pointed to the example of X-rated films: while the Commonwealth permits films the X-rated classification in Australia, X-rated films are legally available only in the ACT and the Northern Territory. In this way, each state and territory is able to control the sale and distribution of the content it wants, regardless of the Commonwealth stance.
Rau notes that he does not yet know the legal details of how exactly South Australia can fold the MA15+ category into R18+.
"Right now what I am envisaging is a system where South Australia still receives games that have been rated MA15+, but we simply put an R18+ sticker on top of the MA15+ sticker before the games are sold. That way parents can have a clear idea of which content is for adults."
Removing MA15+ will void the article of bringing in R18+. They use to get R games and slap a MA sticker on it and now he wants to do it the other way. This will give less choice and a large gap between R and M. If any rating should go it should be M to MA as games that are M can be given to kids but MA you need to be over 15.
U need a MA15+ because CoD is suitable for a 15 year old. I think it should be MA16+ instead, because if you can understand how to drive, u can understand the difference between reality and a game.
@TBoneTony - that's basically what M/ MA15+ rating does...parent can override it...BUT the problem IS majority of parent are clueless about the content of the game. Saw a kid no more than 11 years old, walking out to the counter with his dad with a copy of Bioshock 2, ask the dad if he knew about the content of the game..his reply "oh its just a shooting game"...explain the content to him & he return it..mind you his son was pissed.
You don't need to get rid of MA15+. Movies can do it, so can games too.
@thuban SA is removing MA15+ completely, while the rest of the states and territories are "likely" to keep the rating. However the current MA15+ rating is being altered so that current and new games that would normally fit in there get promoted to R18 anyway So if @protaganist20 lives in SA they are right to complain about it being removed
@protaganist20 they arent there will be a ma15+ classification, (to include strong impact violence) and new r18+ classification ( to include HIGH impact violence) the new system will put games into more appropriate places. ie uncharted will stay MA and games like DEAD SPACE and alike will probably move up to r18+ along with the possibility of games banned under MA to get into r18.. ie MK for all those against it, it will work, its a good thing. if the legal system take advantage of it, and just ban everything still and move all ma15s to r18, the same legal aid will step in and ENFORCE an independent rating system.
I have got one CLEAR and SIMPLE solution. Just give up the control of the classification ratings from a government body and put it into the control of an independant body that KNOWS about computer games. Such as the ESRB in America. Also change the ratings into E for EVERYONE, E10 for Everyone above the age of 10, T for TEEN, M17+ for MATURE and AO18+ for Adults Only E will have the GREEN label E10 will have the YELLOW label T13+ will have the BLUE label M17+ will have the RED label and AO18+ will have the BLACK lavel. And even though retailers may not be able to sell the game to anyone under that age group, the parents can override those decisions if the parent is accompanied their child while adults can get any game they want. Also undersanding that content ratings is NOT about deciding what games come into the country and what can't, they ARE about communication between parent and the game cover. There...solved all of your problems. NOW GET ON WITH IT!!!!!
That's ridiculous, we need an MA15 just as much as we need an R18. Games like Uncharted and Assassins Creed are to violent for an M15 but not bad enough for an R18. Why take away the middle ground?
Good ol' Australia and their ratings.
