Grand Theft Auto-like crime franchise, table-top inspired sci-fi series both top sextuple platinum mark; Saints Row 2 sells over 3.4 million.
When the first Saints Row launched in 2006, it was the first Grand Theft Auto-style game for the current generation of consoles. Though not as highly rated as Rockstar's open-world games, Saints Row and its 2008 sequel, Saints Row 2, both were also critically praised and solid sellers in their own right.
Just how solid was revealed today at the Kaufman Brothers 13th Annual Investor Conference by THQ executive vice president and CFO Paul Pucino. The executive said that, to date, some 3.4 million copies of Saints Row 2 had been sold, bringing the franchise total to 6 million units. That number is a mere fraction of Grand Theft Auto IV's 17 million units in sales but still qualifies as a hit series. However, it is unclear whether that figure includes just the two games or also the various expansion packs for Saints Row 2.
Saints Row 3 is due out in fall 2011, several months after the launch of another of THQ's 2011 tent-pole titles, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. That action game will be the latest installment in the tabletop wargame-inspired franchise, which Pucino revealed has also sold over 6 million units to date. Those games include the real-time strategy titles Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II and its various expansions, including March's highly rated Chaos Rising.
THQ has held the Warhammer 40,000 license since 2001 and has big plans for it in the coming years. Besides the Retribution expansion pack and Dawn of War III, the company is also building a massively multiplayer title, Warhammer 40,000 Online: Dark Millennium. Announced in February 2007, the title is being developed by Vigil Games, the Austin, Texas-based studio behind last month's well-received Darksiders.
saints row 3 will be awsome and i will get it the day it comes out saints row and saints row 2 were great
Saints Row 2 was probably one of the best games of 2008( 2009 for my PC) and I'm glad it sold so well cause now THQ knows they have to raise the bar in madness for Saints Row 3.
Can't believe this is news from Sept 15th. Didn't Darksiders come out back in March/April time frame, not "last month". And SR1/2 are old, not sure who would be buying it now or generating interest. I thought SR2 was just too non-linear to be interesting so I kept away from it. A game should have a point in it where you can say: I've finished, no reason to play more. Especially for nonsense/kid-stuff mini-games. Hope the WH40k turns out well. Day 1 purchase? Not sure yet, maybe if there is a promotional offer.
With all the time between SR 2 and 3, there must be lots of new content and a very polished game. I'm looking forward to it greatly. :)
@Binzen U obviously missing my point, it isnt about the game being easy or not, and i always play all my games under normal settings, plus go read my comments again, while DoW2 offers some very nice RPG elements to the game such as collecting weapons and lvling up, but the fact is you play on the same old map over, over and over again which makes it boring. DoW 1 is awesome, love it, but I was just disappointed how DoW2 turns out
I am certainly getting Saints Row 3 on launch day, unless they announce incredibly bad design changed. Good chance I am picking up 40k Space Marine on launch day too. Loved Saints Row 2, had a lot more fun than GTA 4 playing it. Still play the DoW games, both the first series and DoW 2. Expecting great things from the coming games!
I love the WH40K universe. DoW2 is a solid game. Makes me glad. =^) @Baked-Calbee Stop playing the CPU on Easy....maybe? x^D
Saints Row 2 is the best coop game Ive played online, I wish they add the number of players to 3 or 4 for coop.
Gee Gamespot....I didn't know selling nearly 1/2 as many copy's as the genre juggernaught was a "mere fraction". Your mathematical wizzarding impresses me once again...
I saw my co worker playing saints row 2 the other day, and it looks fun, but i m sorry, DoW 2 wasnt a great game imo, i know i m gonna get flame for this, but the same old map over, and over, and over again, i almost felt asleep one night playing the game
man Saints Row 2, I am still playing it and I bought it at launch. There is so much to do, and the action doesn't really get boring, I can't wait for the 3rd one, cuz I really wonder where the story is going to go, as well as what cool new things they will add.
way to go THQ! I loved both games I thought each one had points that brought something different too the whole sandbox genre in total. Lets hope the third game continues on with its excellence!
Saints Row 2 deserves it. Actually it deserves a lot more sales than that. It was a far more fun game than GTA IV, yet GTA IV sells tons more simply because of the GTA name.
