John Smedley confident login and password information used in recent attack wasn't obtained from Sony, says attackers had "small percentage" of success in gaining access.
Yesterday, Sony revealed a new attack on its networks. This one resulted in the electronics giant temporarily locking down some 93,000 PlayStation Network, Sony Entertainment Network, and Sony Online Entertainment accounts. In an official statement, Sony chief information security officer Philip Reitinger said, "It is likely the data came from another source and not from our networks."
Speaking with GameSpot tonight after Game Developers Conference Online Awards, Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley shed a little more light on what led the company to believe its system was not the ultimate source for the login info used in the attack.
"It's just simple math," Smedley said. "There was such a small percentage of successes. They were attacking with a large number. Because of that, the math tells us it wasn't [Sony's information]. We've said publicly when we were compromised before that the information is out there and could have been used. That was obviously the first thing we looked at. Then we did the mathematical analysis and said, 'Obviously that's not what happened.' I'm not going to say it's impossible [the info came from Sony]. We just think that's not the most likely case."
As for the accounts that were targeted, Smedley said many of them had never been accessed since the PlayStation Network was restored after an extended outage earlier this year. That outage was precipitated by a security breach that exposed some 77 million PSN accounts, not to mention an additional 24.6 million Sony Online Entertainment accounts. Upon logging back into the service after the restoration, users were prompted to change their passwords.
"We really strongly encourage users to change their passwords," Smedley said. "We can't force them to log in and do that. A great number of these accounts they were going after were dormant accounts. Those people in many cases had not yet done their password change. It takes some work to get them to focus on that."
@megakick i5 2500k was released this year, sherlock. Mine's MSI N560GTX Twin Frozr II/OC that's basically GTX 570 in performance. Steam needs an OS? Eh, Windows is an OS, Steam's a client. I argued against your "PCs are expensive and the worst for gaming", I criticized it by saying PCs are less expensive when you don't simply look at the first sum in console purchasing. You need to buy a console, TV, first party accessories and by far, more expensive games. As far as games go, it's up to your own personal taste, but I'd rather have Just Cause 2 for say 8e, Mafia 2 for 10e and it'd still be a lot less than a single game on PS3. Multiple games for the price of one. Consoles and PCs' gap is getting tighter? Perhaps because games are developed FOR consoles and ported over to PCs. Do I choose to play GTA4 on non-HD 640p on PS3 or 1920x1200 with EMB graphicsmods? Yeah, I'll let you figure that one out. What must I do research on? You didn't prove my points wrong in any way. I'm still on about your whole "PCs are the worst for gaming, and the most expensive." I added the whole OS part in this from the other topic of yours where you compared the open OS of PCs' (Windows) and the closed OS of consoles' as this is basically a prime example of how much more closed the console OS is. Hacking, it started because they wanted to make it more open with Homebrew jailbreak. The OS of both PC and consoles are for different uses, so I FAIL to see how you can compare them. Do your research and actually answer what's asked for, I'm not a troll as I criticized YOUR comment, unless you're into calling yourself a troll when you counter-criticize my claims. Flaming me is definitely not convincing me, as insulting is the first step to failure in an arguement. Nicely done, might as well quit bothering now as you haven't even put a single effort into trying to cancel my claim out. Maybe you should, for once try a PC before you call gaming on it so bad. I certainly hope not everyone you argue against is a troll to you, the whole world must be full of trolls then if one's considered being one for criticizing another's text. I didn't even say the consoles are bad anywhere, I don't think so either, I criticized the pricepoints you brought up. If one cannot criticize another's comment, I think that alone kills the freedom of speech a ton. Now, I'll ignore you, kthxbye.
@megakick And by the way, I'm still waiting for you to post your source on the 59.99 pricepoint for PC games, no source, no claiming. Why's it always claims without backups with you? If you haven't noticed, claims without sources can easily be taken down with sources. Doing them without them isn't convincing either. Saying how they're somehow still valid even if shot down with sources, is somehow.. ..a bit.. ..ignorant. No offence. Anyway, it's time to move on, this article's already 9 days old, better not bump it over some stupid debate where you argue without sources against my personal experience and sources. It's leading nowhere, the games aren't going mysteriously up in price even if you claimed they were.
Yeah Valve is great at selling games they dont have registry keys for and making you wait till they are in stock again. Why you are here I don't know this is a console magazine. Who is the troll? Pretty sad that Xbox 360 has a better CPU then your PC, uses less resources and cost half as much.
@buying1999 Steam can be mentioned as it is an online service regardless of its platform. What does XBL offer worth paying for that isn't on the free Steam? Also, let it be the president and it'd still be an opinion.
Well, I see that PSN isn't really any more secure than it's ever been. Look out for yet ANOTHER firmware update. But like the old saying goes,"You get what you pay for." PSN's free, there ya go. Steam doesn't get included in this CONSOLE service conversation. Oh and speaking of CONSOLES, "Xbox 360 is the BEST console EVER made." --John Carmack (The words of an industry legend not "some guy in the internet there TEv. Geese.
LOL! Couple of months ago they get hacked and admit that about 77 million accounts have been compromised. Now they get hacked and have to lock out loads of accounts, and then turn around and try to say that it wasn't because of the earlier hacks... @Doomrul, the same reason that Blizzard doesn't get accounts stolen - they spend money on network security... As opposed to Sony who fire their security team weeks before the big hack. They probably do get attacked but never broken into.
I got a 7.5/9 in IELTS, but I don't understand a darn thing this article is trying to say, especially the part where Smedley explains stuff.
@buying1999 What do you get for paying for that isn't on Steam but on the XBL? Also, you spamming the Carmack line 50 times an article is already getting a tad on the nerves. You're not proving anything but someone else's opinion. Hey, want to know what? "PS3 rules" - someone from the internetz. Oh, and me? PC ftw, but consoles are alright too. If you so enjoy your console, go play on it rather than spam the same line every now and then. It only gives out an image you're insecure of your purchase, when it contains nothing of factual inside of it anyway, only an opinion of your own - and seemingly this Carmack's. An opinion, is unlikely going to chance another's opinion. Had they not wanted to buy the console to begin with, they wouldn't have bought the console to begin with. Simple as that.
Oh I know it hurts but. You get what you pay for. Carmack is coming out with more painful truths about the pitiful overpriced internet ready blu ray player. Tight Ram and poor i/o performance. ROFL. Oh the rest of the industry are afraid to tell the truth about the ps3hdwii but NOT Carmack baby. He tells it like it is. "Xbox 360 is the BEST console EVER made." --John Carmack.
@Truelori See this That's BF3. I know you didn't ask for it, but yeah, like I said: 8800gts can run BF3 on low too. ;) I'm on overclocked GTX 560 Ti myself. Point is: You don't have to upgrade your PC every 2 years. ;p 8800gts is 4 years old GPU anyway.
@megakick Lol nice mis information you got there troll, My friend bought Rage for like What $24, and just for waiting 2 months after New Vegas came out he bought it for $13, you know how ? Deals. There every where it not only Steam. Good luck finding any of that in consoles. So sad that Valve is a better run company than both Sony and Microsoft put together. Have you tried Sony and Microsoft so called customer service? LOL laughable.
@buying1999 Ever heard of an opinion? No? Well, want to know what it is? I'm glad to hear you do. It's what you just wrote. Oh, and repeating the same saying isn't making it any less of an opinion.
@megakixck You've obviously never seen Stean daily deals, midweek deals, weekend deals, summer sales, christmas sales and publisher sales. If nothing else, read about them, there's a reason why I own more than 150 games on PC but just 30ish on PS3. While you're at it, see Humblebundle. Twice a year (this year 3 times) they put indie games for sale and YOU decide the price. Right now THQ's sales are ending. Metro 2033 for example was 2,5e. Go to store.steampowered.com to see that at the moment Lara Croft trilogy is for sale. From them I've caught Mafia 2 for 10e, Just Cause 2 for 8e, Borderlands GOTY for 11e, Hot Pursuit for 2e.. etc I'll have all those before it even reaches 40e which is the price of a single game on console. Oh and Mafia was 40e on consoles last year, that's when I got it for 10e. Therefore I brought it up. Also for Mafia 2 price comparison for retail now: click me that's one Finnish store, no bias. I'd love you to post your source of all the PC games mysteriously costing 59.99. Overpriced PS3 you say? It started off at 700 dollars and that's more than what I said. If something's overpriced, it's the store you just brought up for PC retails, it looks awfully alike to what prices they sell the console games in certain stores around here. I find it ironic you compare PC and console OS in this article, why? Because first of all, they're not comparable as PCs are for a lot more than just gaming, second of all, because the PS3 got hacked to begin with for it being such a locked out OS and Hotz wanted to therefore jailbreak it for the Homebrew. Also for the removal of other Os which was basically taking features off the promised. What a lovely company, don't you think? Big chance of looking crap? I run BF3 on ultra / high settings with a 800e PC on 50fps, which is once again less than I paid for PS3 plus HDTV to begin with. Even my friend's 8800gts plays Rage at 1024x768. The Sony brand is expensive and adds to the price alot, see VAIO for example if you don't believe me. Thank you for your care though. I know for sure I, personally can no longer put a dime in subscription fees for a service worse than another that's free, pay 40 euros a game or more when they're not even in HD all the time as promised and some even perform bad on PS3 due to its differing hardware architecture. GTA4 is 640p to name one non-HD game, 99% aren't Full HD either, but upscaled 1080p.- - It doesn't take much to outdo 2005 and 2006 hardware either fyi, technology advances fast and as PCs are user upgradable, it gives them an unfair advantage in graphics and performance, which is why they're not brought to comparisons all that often. Wonder why KZ3 uses so much motion blur. Steam does the software side for me, it has ingame chat, screenshotting, videorecording, crossgame voicechat, cloud support, Steam Guard (so it requires email id and pw to get on someone's account even if they knew one's steam id and pw), VAC, crossplatform multiplayer, digital trading system and great objective hunts, amazing sales etc. It's free too. I also like how VALVe is easy to contact in trouble whereas Sony.. I'll let you try to find a Contact us on their page, I've been there. If you'll start talking about ports now, I'll say one word: Bayonetta. P.S. It's not bragging when I'm critizing your claim of "PC gaming is the worst platform & the most expensive." I'm allowed to criticize, and I personally as a PC & PS3 gamer think I know which is less pricy for me to play my games on. Not trying to offend, just critizing. All in all, I do think they're good consoles, and you're allowed to game on whatever you like, don't get me wrong, but calling PC gaming expensive, is as ridiculous as saying PS3 has no games. I know you and I both disagree with that claim. Now it's ignore (seriously) on my part, I've said what I'm going to, if you're unwilling to look stuff up, it's not my loss, it's your loss.
Sony was just asking for this by telling hackers bring it on. Sony needs to fix more than security to their games lol.
Not my fault you bought a overpriced PS3. Yeah because old Xbox 360 and PS3 games don't go dow in price. Mafia 2 is 19.99 in the states not 59.99. PC Diablo 3 59.99 Call of Duty MW3 59.99 Batman Arkahm City 59.99 Elder Scrolls Skyrim 59.99 Rage 59.99 Star Wars: Old Republic 59.99 plus 14.99 a month WOW BIG savings there!!!! Then there is the chance that some of these game might look like crap on your PC. Maybe you need to do some research b4 you post computer gaming is cheap. Sorry PC games are pretty much second to consoles games which are computers with a better OS. Please cry somewhere else. So u paid 3 times as much then a xbox 360 if not more to play games that look as good as Xbox 360 running at minimum graphics with 15 fps good job thats something to brag about. My laptop is better then ya PC bud...
@Hig1134 Console are the best place to play to your very limited games. While on PC not only do we get free games for just being fans (valve anyone?). We don't have to pay for crap, overpriced, services like PSN and Live, we also get to mod our games, in which we can even make other games from a game, (counter strike, Left 4 dead, Dota etc).Console gaming is where is that? I beg to differ.
Hey' how's that psn security there? ROFL. Oh and now Carmack is coming out with more painful truths about the pitiful overpriced internet ready blu ray player. Tight Ram and poor i/o performance. ROFL. Oh the rest of the industry are afraid to tell the truth about the ps3hdwii but NOT Carmack baby. He tells it like it is. "Xbox 360 is the BEST console EVER made." --John Carmack.
@megakick Do continue talking without reading, it's sad. Noticeably you're incapable of counting gameprices, first party accessories, subscription fees, hdtv into your console price counting. I paid a 1000e for ps3 2,5 years ago and LG 42LD450, all I get is console upscaled 1080p. I paid 800e for PC that makes my PS3 look like a pixelmess. Uncharted 2 and God of war 3 still look ok though. Oh. And in just half a year I've bought like 5 times the games I bought on PS3 in 2,5 years. Mafia 2 for 10e is always cheaper than paying 40-60e for it. You can buy multiple games for PC for the price of one on the console. But of course since you have all those exclusives of where I'm interested in hardly any, that will totally makeup for way more expensive games and an online service that somewhat makes you feel alone while in it. Don't blame it on free, Steam's free and is better than Xbox Live. If WoW is the only thing you think PC gamers play, open your eyes. We play TF2, CSS alot and multiplatform games a lot those look and perform better. I hope you realize that the brand i.e add to the price of hardware, which is why brand PCs like Alienware are expensive yet custombuilt perform the same for a lot cheaper. Sony is one of those brands too with your PS3, don't believe me? See their VAIO laptops. Oh and once again. I own a PS3 too and on some level, I personally regret the purchase while I don't at the same time. If anything Uncharted 3 looks like it's going to be a good game. Don't go with hardware upgrading either, my friend is still playing RAGE on his 8800gts. You don't have to upgrade all that often unless you wish to keep the games maxed out. Sorry druggernaut
Should the people have changed their passwords? Obviously. Should Sony be held accountable for poor network safety? Duh. I know home computers that don't get hacked nearly as often. And it's not like some people don't use their computers for online banking. What's stopping hackers from getting to them? Idk try keylogger protection... better system security in general. I like Sony, I do, and in all rights, there was never anything on my account to steal in the first place so I'm not really worried, but if a home computer gets hacked less than a billion dollar company, I'm not sure weather or not they're taking this seriously... Maybe Sony should start being like Google and hire other hackers to get rid of hackers. Seems to work for them...
You can buy a xbox 360 and a ps3 for the cost of one pc with graphics that are still not comparable to xbox 360 or ps3 and you don't get the exclusives. You get World of Warcraft, pretty much everything else is coming out for the consoles. You can't just play PC games on a graphic card you need all the other bits and a OS.
Most likely the attempts were from an account/password database. It is not uncommon for people to use the same user name and password for multiple accounts. The individual's A/P is then stolen via a keylogger or because they fell for an email phishing scam and gets thrown in a database. Then the hackers use the database themselves or sell it to gold farmer companies who use it to mass check whatever game they want a free account in. It happens to every gaming company pretty much constantly, it just isn't publicized.
I feel this won't be the last of the hacking against Sony. If these hackers failed, more will try to attempt to attack it again but with better approach. Hackers like gamers are shooting for the same goal: achievement. The same lame achievement to who could cause the most hacking nightmare to the PSN and continue to pissed the world over. The only way to stop it is to well continue to stop it. Hopefully, them hackers don't know how to make babies or else we'll be overrun by them when the next two gens comes around.
Yeah, because it's not that many accounts makes it okay. The fact that even a "small percentage" was able to get through is unacceptable. Sony needs to get their act together and stop these attacks. Sony needs to be held accountable for their recent mishaps. Think I'm wrong? Then by all means go steal "a small percentage" of money from a cash register and see what happens.
@jchristenberry The funny thing is, I own a DS and only 5 games on it. Talk about a good purchase. Not saying DS is bad, don't get me wrong, it's just not for me. @dRuGGeRnaUt It's easy for me to respond to someone who posts a comment strongly against, that's all. I know I posted it too many times already and like you said, I'm not going to bother anymore. For some reason, I'm just tired of people always on about that PC gaming is the most expensive choice, whereas it's really not in the long run, then again.. why do I even care when know things aren't like that. Live and let live is what I should go by right now, I bet. Sorry mate, won't happen again.
@Sendmn23 Whether or not you are on it doesnt prove a point. A hacker could get to ur info just as easily unless u delete ur psn completely.
@TevoxZi just an observation: You keep claiming you are not here to convince people PC gaming is better, yet you have 8 comments on the first page alone. I agree with a lot of what you say, but saying it 8 times makes it seem like something other than what you are claiming to do. PC and Console will never outdo each other, because as you stated in one of your comments, it's all about opinion. - thats fine, but you have stated yours 8 times, maybe give it a break and go to system wars??
Consoles I prefer because they are cheaper and have better game support than your equally priced PC. PC I like because what you can get out of it is only limited to your bank account.
@TevoxZi So if I get a console and dont by many or any games... it gets even cheaper!?!? WOW! At this point I wont by anything and then what? Go outside? Pffft!
Well as long as he is "confident"... XD I don't trust corporate-lawyer-generated statements. Just like the words/phrases "probably" "maybe" "could possibly" "believed to", all of it sounds like b*** s*** to me, and a way to by time without taking unessesary blame. This is NOT exclusive to sony, but goes for every single major corporation/politician in the world. In the end, only time will tell.
For me Xbox live is a better setup and less sloppy the PSN but PS3 has better exclusives then the 360 imo . I only like Gears of War as far as exclusives go for the 360 . So for me each has it's pro's and cons .
ok so i love Sony, i really wanna but the new psp but with all this going on im afraid to get it... Ive never wanted to buy a 360 either, but if microsoft comes out w/ a new console and sony does too, I will b sure to pick up microsofts console
To those saying 360 is perfect and more reliable than this, I disagree. I have a 360 and I know for sure that 360 has some issues here and there, so stop giving us 360 players a bad name! :P
@TevoxZi Not touching on the subject you guys are going back and forth about, but since when (and to the general public that does this) did the $ start going behind the numbers, It's supposed to be in front like this, '$800', ect.
@shadowsea07 Console $300 A proper HDTV 400-more$ subscription fees on XBL 50$ a year An avg. price of a game on console is 40~50$ Expensive first party accessories I bought Mafia 2 last christmas for 10e on Steam whereas it was 40e on consoles. I bought Just Cause 2 for 8e... Blahblah. It'd take a few games to reach up to 40$. I bought my PC custombuilt for 800$, it's got i5 2500k and MSI N560GTX Ti TFII/oc Upgrading isn't necessity often either unless you really want to stay on the max details. Imo: in the longrun PC gaming IS cheaper if you're into buying many games.
Will people stop saying this was a hack, it was not a hack! A hack is when someone breaks into a system and manipulates it or steals information, that didn't happen here. A person got sign in id's and passwords from somewhere else(allegedly) and tried to match them up on psn. I don't see how that is anything like the "hack" that took place in April; besides Sony caught it and took immeadiate action which shows me that their security is alot better than before.
